COURSEDESCRIPTION
Thepurposeofthiscourseistoprovidethestudentswithtrainingtoenterthecarpentryprofessionora
foundationforpostsecondaryeducationandprovidethemwithameansofsupport.Thiscourse
includesbothclassroomstudyandpracticalexperienceonthejobsite.Thestudentwillbecome
familiarwithbothresidentialandcommercialconstructionwithanemphasisonresidentialconstruction.
Theinstructorbelievesthatthroughexperiencingmanyaspectsofconstruction,thestudentwillexpand
hisorherknowledge,skillsandinterests.Thecoursewillapplymathconceptslearnedincoreclasses
torealworldapplicationsandhelpthestudentfindsuccessinothercourses.Noprerequisitesrequired.

INSTRUCTIONALPHILOSOPHY
Studentswillbegivenchallengingrealworldprojectsandassignmentstypicaloftheconstructionfield.
Highqualityworkisexpectedandstudentswillbegivenopportunitiestoredoworkuntilitmeets
standards.Classroomactivitieswillincludereading,laboratoryactivities,research,basiccomputer
applications,projects,andproblemsolving.Majorprojectswillincludeconstructionofahouseorsimilar
structure.Studentswilloftenworkinteams,butwillbeexpectedtocompleteindividualassignmentsin
relationtotheteam'swork.Assessmentmethodswillincludehandsonskillsassessments,written
exams,tests,andquizzesoralandwrittenresearchreportsreadingassignmentsandprojects.

SIMULATEDWORKPLACE
ESACCwillinitiateanewsimulatedworkplacephilosophytohelpstudentsmeetthedemandforwork
readyemployees.ThesimulatedworkplaceenvironmentenhancestheCareerandTechnical
Education(CTE)classwithamockcompany,allowingstudentstotakeonauthenticworkplaceroles.
Studentswillbeimmersedwithinanengagingworkplaceenvironmentwhichofferssupportinaddition
torigoroustrainingwhiledevelopingthenecessaryskillsetstobeahighqualitynextgeneration
employee.Studentswillfillvariousrolesinthesimulatedclassroomastheywouldatarealworkplace.
ESACCstudentswillparticipateinclassprojects,communityserviceprojects,andotherprojectswhich
areincorporatedintotheclassthroughSimulatedWorkplaceprogramming.

secondaryeducationcarpentrystandards)
Thestudentwill:
1) Identifythedifferenttypesofconstructionmaterialandcommonuses.
2) Read,understand,andcommunicateeffectivelyintheconstructiontrades.
3) Usenumeracyskillsandprocessestocollect,analyze,andpresentdataasitrelatestoconstruction
4) DemonstrateathoroughunderstandingofjobsitesafetyandthepurposeofOSHA.
5) Recognizecarpentryrelatedtoolsanddemonstrateproperandsafeuseofthetools.
6) Demonstrateathoroughunderstandingofthestepsinvolvedinconstructionofahouseorsimilar
structureanddemonstratethesteps.

7) Demonstrate21stCenturySkillsthatincludeproblemsolving,timemanagement,interpersonaland

teamworkskills,communication,culturalsensitivity,ethicalbusinessdecisions,integrity,and
confidentiality.

Finalexamconsistingofbothwrittenandhandsonskillsdemonstrationswillbeadministeredat
endofeachsemester.Allexitingseniorswillbeassessedusingathirdpartyassessment.

Theprimarygoalofastandardsbasedgradingsystemistoimprovestudentachievementbyfocusing
instructionandthealignmentofcurriculumwiththeessentialstandards/competencies.Districtgrading
practices/guidelinesinclude:
1. Includeonlyscoresthatrelatetotheachievementofthestandards
2. Useavarietyofassessmentmethodstocollecthighquality,organizedevidenceofachievement
3. Useappropriategradecalculation
4. Usegradingandassessmentproceduresthatsupportlearning
A4.0gradingscalewillbeusedtodetermineyourstudentsgrade.Foraconversionscale,pleaserefertothe

Fourpointrubricsbasedonthescalebelowwillbecommonplaceinassessingstudentachievement.

EmployabilityStandard
Employabilityskillsareasimportanttothesuccessofstudentsasarethecoursestandards.Equalweightwill
beplacedonemployabilityskillsandontheircoursestandards.Ourmainfocusisonpreparingstudentstobe
successfulwhentheyleavetheCareerCenterwhethertheycontinuetheireducation,enlistinthemilitaryor
entertheworkforce.TheESACChasdeterminedthatequalemphasisonemployabilityskillsandcourse
standardsisneededtoensurestudentsuccess.

AstudentsOverallScore=50%Employability+25%LabAssessments+25%UnitAssessments.

ReTakepolicy:Studentsmustcompleteanassessmentretakeformtoretakeanassessment.Studentsmay
havetocompleteassignmentstoadequatelypreparetoretaketheassessment.

MakeupWork:Makeupworkfromabsencesisthestudentsresponsibilityandisduewithintwodaysafter
returningtoschool.Excessivelatenessisdiscouragedandcouldresultinreductionofearnedgrade.Ifthe
studentneedstousetheclassroomcomputerlab,thestudentmustmakearrangementswiththeinstructorto
scheduleatime.Atimecanbescheduledforadditionalassistanceifneeded.
