INTERNATIONAL NEWS: PH condemns North Korea missile launch
The Philippine government on Wednesday evening hit the reported missile launch of the Democratic Peoples
Republic of Korea
(DPRK) or North Korea last week.
The Philippines condemns DPRKs latest missile launch on 3 August 2016, the Department of Foreign Affairs said
in a
statement.
This action seriously undermines regional peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, it said.
The Philippines also urged North Korea to comply with its international obligations under relevant UN Security
Council
resolutions and to the process of constructive dialogue.
The statement came after the United Nations Security Council failed to agree on a statement strongly condemning
the launch,
which resulted in the missile landing near Japan.

NATIONAL NEWS: Duterte tells Army: Prepare for terror, ISIS problem
President Duterte underscored the need to prepare the countrys Armed Forces against the threat of terrorism.
I see the looming problem. In three to seven years, we will have a problem with ISIS, the President Duterte, who
spoke mostly in Bisaya, told soldiers of the Philippine Armys 1st Infantry Division.
ISIS is the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, which has been winning converts among young and idealistic Muslim
youth in Mindanao after the Bangsamoro peace process was stalled.
The military has so far refused to acknowledge the presence of ISIS in the country although the Maute group in
Lanao del sur and the Sulu-based Abu Sayyaf have been styling themselves as ISIS affiliates.
Mr. Duterte related that in some parts of Mindanao, there are white men (whom) I supposed are Arabs.
They dont have weapons but they are into indoctrination. This is dangerous because they are targeting the thinking
(of people), he explained.
President Duterte said the big challenge now is to prevent the ISIS disease from contaminating the Moro
(population).
When the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law failed to be legislated by the 16th Congress, the Moro Islamic
Liberation Front (MILF) expressed the same fear of violent extremism gaining adherents among the Moro
communities.
According to Mr. Duterte, the ISIS is a dangerous lot, unlike the Moro revolutionary groups, because they seem to
hate people; they kill civilians (indiscriminately); and are into massacres.
That is really hard, he said.
I would rather that you be prepared, he added.

The 1st Infantry Division covers the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi where the Abu Sayyaf is a
threat, and the mainland provinces of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte, Misamis
Occidental, Lanao del Norte, and Lanao del sur.
President Duterte said that Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana advised him the Armed Forces might need about
20,000 men to beef up security in the areas threatened by the growing activities of the ISIS.
I am preparing for that eventuality. Hence, I want people whom I can count on, and that is the military and police,
Mr. Duterte said.

Im excited to go home but sad that Ill be leaving you behind. We have been like a big, loving family here, said

The cheerful Zamboanguea snapped the countrys 20-year dry spell in the Olympics with a silver-medal finish in

Tycoon and sports patron Manny V. Pangilinan has arranged for Diazs parents, Emelita and Eduardo, to be flown to
Manila from their hometown in Mampan, Zamboanga City, to welcome their daughter at Naias Terminal 3.
From there, Diaz will be brought to Resorts World-Manila where she will spend the night along with her small
entourage. Pangilinans private plane will fly her and her parents to Zamboanga City in the morning.
Diaz said she had received word that President Duterte wanted to meet with her in Davao before Sunday, when her
village celebrates the feast of its patron saint.
She was the first of the 13 Filipino athletes, many of whom have been here since July 23, to fly back home. Five
have yet to see action in the Games following judoka Kodo Nakanos first-round exit in the 81 kg class Tuesday and
swimmer Jasmine Alkhaldis stint in the heats of the womens 100-meter freestyle event Wednesday.
Nakano, born to a Japanese father and his Filipino wife, spent only 79 seconds on the mat in bowing to reigning
World Cup champion Matteo Marconcini by ippon, equivalent to a full pointjudos most lopsided score.
A big disappointment in her first Olympics in London 2012, Alkhaldi said she expected to do better in the event this
time with Southeast Asian Games nemesis Junkrajang Natthanan of Thailand landing in the same heat. The FilipinoSaudi pool mermaid wound up 34th among 50 entries in London with a time of 57.13 seconds, a far cry from her
personal best of 55.94.
I felt I was too young then, I felt like a baby in the water said Alkhakdi, who trained in Hawaii under coach
Jennifer Buffin. I feel comfortable competing now.
Yet to plunge into action are long jumper Marestella Torres-Sunang, hurdler Eric Cray, marathoner Mary Joy Tabal,
golfer Miguel Tabuena and taekwondo-jin Kirstie Elaine Alora.
Tabuena tees it up in the first round of golf action on Aug. 11 at the Olympic links course, Tabal negotiates Rios

respective events at Maracana Stadium.
Alora is the last to see action when she competes in the first round of the +67 kg class against former Olympic
champ Marie Espinoza of Mexico on Aug. 20 at Carioca Pavilion.
We are still hopeful that anyone from among our five remaining athletes will spring a surprise, said chief of
mission Joey Romasanta. They are all in high spirits after Hidilyns feat.
