Abstract
Presented paper refers to service continuity of gas-insulated substations, a topic which is also dealt in
annex F of IEC international standard no. 62271-203 Edition 2, dated September 2011. Among all aspects
which contribute to GIS service continuity, as per here-below sketch, the following aspects drastically
impact substation service continuity upon extension, failure, repair and high-voltage tests: Safety rules,
Single-line diagram (SLD), Architecture and gas partitioning, Spare parts, tools and trained staff
availability. Illustration no. 1 Such impact can be assessed, not only in qualitative terms, but also in
quantitative ones. Buffer compartment concept, active/passive busbar concept, location of earthing
switches, temporary earthing facilities are analysed, too.
