SPEAKING SKILL OF SMA STUDENTS

MORAL DILEAMMAS TECHNIQUE TO PROMOTE SPEAKING
SKILL OF SMA STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION
A. Background
(gap between the real and ideal condition)
For example:
According to the Government Regulation Number 19 Year 2005
about National Education Standard, formal English teaching is
emphasized on speaking and writing. It means that students are supposed
to be able to produce texts both in spoken and written forms. Producing
texts in spoken form means that students must master speaking ability.
Glen Flucher (2003: 23) stated that Speaking is the verbal use of
language to communicate with others. Verbal use of language relates
with the use of our mouth and vocal chords to produce utterances that
people understand as language. It happens in variety of context.
Language was viewed naively and simply as the medium of
communication, its ontological status was not at issue, its epistemological
role unexplored (Westwood and Linstead, 2001). It means that language
learners define fluency as the skill to converse with others, much more
than the skill to read, write, or comprehend oral language. They regard
speaking as the most important skill they can acquire and they asses their
progress in terms of their accomplishment in spoken communication.
But, it is not an easy task to make them speak fluently.
When the researcher was doing field practice, there were two
problems faced by teachers in teaching speaking. Firstly, most students
were shy and not brave to speak in front of the class. Secondly, it related

with the lack of vocabulary mastery. It caused them get tongue tied to
share their ideas or opinion. They finally switched the language, from
English to Javanese.
From the problems above, moral dilemmas as one alternative
technique to teach speaking skill of SMA students can solve the gap
between teaching practice in the classroom and students ability.

1. How is Moral Dilemmas technique to promote speaking skill of
SMA students?
C. Objectives of the study
1. To find out how Moral Dilemma to promote speaking skill of SMA
students.

REVIEW of LITERATURE

1. Favourite Objects
A variation on getting students to tell personal stories (but which
may also involve a lot of storytelling) is an activity in which students
are asked to talk about their favourite objects (things like MP3
players, objects with sentimental value, instruments, clothes,
jewellery, pictures, etc). they think about howthey would describe
their favourite objects in terms of when they got them, why got they
got them, what they do with them, why they are so important to them
and whether there are any stories associated with them. In groups,
they then tell each other about their objects, and the groups tell the
class about which was the most unusual/interesting, etc in their
group (Jeremy Harmer: 2007)
2. Meeting and Greeting
Students role play a formal/business social occasion where they meet
a number of people and introduce themselves.

5. Moral Dilemmas
Students are presented with a moral dilemma and asked to come to
a decision about how to resolve it. For example, they are told that a
students has been caught cheating in important exam. They are then
given the students (far-from-ideal) circumstances and offered five
possible courses of action from exposing the student publicly to
ignoring the incident which they have to choose between. (find any
resources, browsing the internet and explain more detail)
C. On the Chosen Subject/Students

The subject of the study is students of Senior High School Students


(SMA). The Moral Dilemmas can be able promote students speaking
skill. Eleventh grade students of Senior High School

DISCUSSION
A. Why: Resonation
(Resonations of the chosen method to teach/develop the chosen
skill/component for the chosen subject/students)
Moral Dilemmas is one alternative technique that can promote
students speaking skill. In related with the background of the study, there
were two problems faced by teachers in teaching speaking. Firstly, most
students were shy and not brave to speak in front of the class. Secondly,
it related with the lack of vocabulary mastery. It caused them get tongue
tied to share their ideas or opinion. They finally switched the language,
from English to Javanese. Moral Dilemmas engage students to speak up
based on the evidence such as magazine, newspaper, internet or etc. It
focus on how the students produce verbally and how they deliver the idea
in English appropriately

1. The teacher divides the class into small groups (4-5 students)
2. The students provide moral issue such as cheating, corruption, etc.
3. Each group writes degree or disagree opinion based on the data such
as magazine, newspaper, internet etc.
4. Then, class debate begins by performing their opinion.

idea by giving charts, picture, matrix etc)

1. The steps of Moral Dilemmas in teaching speaking by following:


a) The teacher divides the class into small groups (4-5 students)
b) The students provide moral issue such as cheating,
corruption, etc.
c) Each group writes degree or disagree opinion based on the
data such as magazine, newspaper, internet etc.
d) Then, class debate begins by performing their opinion.
B. Suggestion
(Encouragement of the use of the method in the given context)
The Moral Dilemmas Technique can promote students speaking skill
appropriately. It proved that students create good atmosphere by
communicating each other the CLT class. So, the teacher can aplly CLT
in teaching writing class. (Develop your suggestion)
