Overthecomingweek,arangeofantiOlympicsprotesteventswilltakeplaceacrossRiodeJaneiro,
culminatinginalargedemonstrationduringtheopeningceremonyonFridayAugust5.UnderthebannerThe
ExclusionGames,varioussocialmovementsandcollectiveshavecometogethertoorganizeaseriesofevents
highlightingtheproblemswiththecitysOlympicsdevelopments.
TheresplentyforRioresidentstoprotestabout.MayorEduardoPaesvanityprojecthaschangedthecity,
makingitmoreunequal,moresegregated,andmoredivided.InthenameoftheGames,over77,000favela
residentshavebeenevicted,andmanymoreresidentsoffavelastheformalcityalikehavebeenforcedtoleave
throughgentrification.Over2,500citizenshavebeenkilledbypoliceinthecitysinceRiowontherighttohost
theGamesin2009.Allthegrandplansforenvironmentallegacies,includingcleaningthecityswaterways,
havebeenscrapped.NotonlyhavetheGamesfailedtohelptheenvironment,theyveactivelydamagedit,with
thegolfcoursebuiltintheMarapendinaturereservejustoneexample.
DespitetheclaimsthattheOlympicsareallaboutsport,severalcommunitysportingfacilitieshavebeenshut
aroundthecityandreplacedwithelitefacilitiesfromwhichlocalpeopleareexcluded.Theindigenous
populationofAldeiaMaracan,whowereevictedfromtheirmuseumneartheMaracanstadiumpriortothe
WorldCuphavestillnotheardanynewsaboutthenewmuseumsitetheywerepromisedbytheBrazilian
OlympicCommittee.Atthenationallevel,theOlympicswillbeopenedbyamanmanyinBrazilseeasleading
acoupagainstthedemocraticallyelectedDilmaRousseff,whowillbeabsentfromtheOlympics.

ThesheercostoftheOlympics,conservativelyestimatedataroundR$40billionorUS$12billion(althoughthis
islikelytoriseevenfurtheraftertheGames),hasbroughtpublicservicestoastandstill.TheStateofRiode
Janeirorecentlydeclaredastateofcalamitytoreleaseextrafederalfundingasitcouldntpaypublicservants,
includingthepolicewhowillprotecttheGames.BecauseofOlympicspending,cutstoeducationandhealth
carehaveledtoclosuresofhospitalsandaneducationstrike,supportedbystudentsoccupyingtheirschools.
AsignificantchunkofthisOlympicspendingisunderinvestigationforcorruptioninthecontractsaspartofthe
nationwideanticorruptionOperationCarWash.WhilethecitysaysthatmostofthemoneyfortheOlympics
comesfromprivatesources,manyofthecontributionstotheOlympicbudgetarefromrealestatedevelopers
whowillbegivenpubliclyownedlandoncetheOlympicshavefinishedessentiallythemoneyhasbeenraised
bysellingoffpublicassetsthroughthebackdooratbargainbasementprices.
Andwhiletherearealltheseissuestoprotestabout,newlawsintroducedfortheOlympicsthreatentodefine
politicalprotestasterrorism,legitimizingstateviolence.SecuritystaffforRiosmetroattackedprotestersand
journalistswhentheymarchedagainsttheOlympicsafewweeksago.Allthisaddsuptodenyingmany
CariocastherighttotheircityRiohasbeenimaginedandshapedtobeacitywherepeopleinvesttheirmoney,
attheexpenseofthosewholivehere.
CariocasprotestingagainsttheOlympicsjoinarichhistoryofprotestagainstthelocalimpactsoftheGames.
Since1932localshaveprotestedOlympicspendingandinrecenttimesantiOlympicprotesthasgainedpace.
WhetheritsactivistsconcernedaboutgentrificationandracialsegregationinAtlanta,indigenousand
environmentalactivistsfromSydney,humanrightsdefendersinBeijing,activistsfightingforcivilliberties,
againstgentrificationanddefendingtheenvironmentinVancouverandagainstthemilitarizationofthecityin
London,CircassianactivistsinSochi,orevenactivistsfightingfortherightsofthehomelessinTokyo(thenext
citytohostthesummerOlympics),activistsinRiowillbewatchedandsupportedbypeopleallovertheworld
whohaveseensimilarimpactsintheircities.TheOlympicsleaveatrailofexclusion,brokenpromises,and
angrylocalswherevertheytouchdownandfurtherpressurehereinRiowillhelpforcetheLordsoftheRings
intochange.
TheweekofprotestwillbeginonMondayAugust1withavigilofdignityinCinelndiainresponsetothe
actionswhichhaveunderminedequalitybetweenallpeopleandnature.FromAugust2to4,variouseventswill
beheldattheRioFederalUniversitysInstituteforPhilosophyandSocialSciences(IFCS/UFRJ)indowntown
Rio.Eachdaywillhavethreethemes,andactivitiesinthemorning,afternoonandeveningincludingworkshops,
debates,filmscreeningsandexhibitions,followedbyanactioninthestreettoendeachday.Throughoutthe
week,theEvictionsMuseum,apopupmuseumbyresidentsandsupportersofVilaAutdromotopreserve
memory,willbeinstalledinLargodeSoFranciscooutsidetheIFCSbuilding.

ThiswillbefollowedbyalargepanelontheExclusionGames,with16ofthosehitbyviolationsinthenameof
megaevents.
Onthefinalday,FridayAugust5,alargemobilizationwilltakeplaceinPraaSaensPeainTijuca,closetothe
Maracanstadium,wheretheofficialOlympicopeningceremonywilltakeplacesimultaneously.Thishas
echoesoftheprotestagainsttheWorldCup,whichwasorganizedinthesamelocationduringthefinalofthat
event.AstheFacebookeventpagesays,inacitywheretheabyssofinequalityisgrowingincreasinglywide
throughtractors,bulletsandbombs,itiscrucialtoadvancethefightfortherighttothecity,todemocracyandto
