PDB3033 DRILLING ENGINEERING

GROUP PROJECT
SEMESTER MAY 2016

REPORT SUBMISSION: 12:00pm, Tuesday, 26th July 2016

PRESENTATION: 2.00pm, Wednesday, 27th July 2016

Introduction
Understanding Rig components and recognizing the functions and their abilities to enable the
drilling operation is vital in this course. For the first time ever, our Petroleum Engineering
department proudly present you the UTP-Oil Rig Design Competition this semester. This
competition is a part of the assessment components in the PDB3033 Drilling Engineering I
course. Students will be equally divided to design an offshore rig based of their preference.
Every group will need to come out with a scaled down rig model and a schematic engineering
drawing of their design.

Requirements
Each group is required to prepare a rig model and a short report (2 pages excluding the
engineering drawing) outlining the given case study and its explanation. The rig model should
be presented during the presentation day and the report should be set out in a form that
covers:
1. Title page
2. Introduction
Explain the objectives, learning outcomes and the purpose of the report and indicate
the scope of the report (i.e. what the report will cover). No more than one page.
3. Description of given topic
Indicate the source and explanation of the drilling rig & drawings
4. References
! Be sure to list and acknowledge the sources you have used (including journal articles,
company reports and web sites).
! Remember to cite references in the text, and to list the references used at the end of
your report in senior author alphabetical order.

Further Reading

The report should be based on information from more than one reference source.

Simply paraphrasing a single paper or reproducing text from a web site will not earn
particularly high marks. Reproducing the material of others as your own work is
plagiarism, and may constitute academic misconduct.

Presentation of Report
The content and structure of your report is important; so is the presentation and style. First
impressions count, so consider these simple tips to ensure your report is reader-friendly:

Use subheadings;

Ensure the separate parts of your report stand out clearly; and

Allow generous spacing between the elements of your report;

Use dot points / numbers/ letters to articulate the main messages;

Use tables and figures (graphs, illustrations, maps etc.) for clarification. Label them
clearly and cite the source. These graphics should relate to the text of your report;

Number each page (a neat header and/or footer makes your work look more
professional);

Use consistent and appropriate formatting.

Rules & Regulations

Materials are not provided and must be prepared by the group. It is highly encourage to
utilize the recycled materials as part of the rig model.

The rig model to be constructed should be ranged from 600mm length and maximum
height of 500mm.

For presentation purpose, the groups are allowed to use supporting material (e.g. slides,
poster etc.) during the presentation.

Each time will be given 7.5 minutes for presentation and 7.5 minutes for questions and
answer session.

The schematic drawing of the rig must be submitted to the Mr Aslams office at least
one day before the presentation. The drawing also must be available during the
presentation
