and Macau Pizza Hut provides dine-in, take out,
and delivery services. At present, there are over
80 stores in Hong Kong and Macau.
Pizza Hut has been serving Hong Kong for almost
30 years. The first Pizza Hut restaurant opened in
Hong Kong in 1981, and the first delivery service
began in 1992. In 1987, Jardine Matheson & Co.
Ltd. took over the Hong Kong Pizza Hut franchise,
and has been operating the famous chain to this
present day, upholding Customer Mania as its core
corporate culture. To date, Pizza Hut is the largest
pizza and pasta chain restaurant in Hong Kong, with
over 4,000 employees dedicated to over 80 stores
in Hong Kong and Macau.

The success of Pizza Hut in Hong Kong is

It received both the EFFIE Gold and the Yahoo!
Emotive Brand Awards in 2008 and 2009. Organised
by HK4As, the EFFIE award recognises brands for
effective marketing promotions while the Yahoo!
Award is conferred to brands that have been
selected by online users as their favourite brands.
HISTORY
The legacy of Pizza Hut began in 1958, when
two college students from Wichita, Kansas, were
approached by a family friend with the idea of
opening a pizza parlour. Although the concept was
relatively new to many Americans at that time, the

two brothers quickly saw the potential of this new


enterprise.
After borrowing $600 from their mother, they
purchased some second-hand equipment and
rented a small building on a busy intersection in
their hometown. The result of their entrepreneurial
efforts was the first Pizza Hut restaurant and the
foundation for what would become the largest and
most successful pizza restaurant chain in the world.
In 1977, Pizza Hut was acquired by PepsiCo Inc.
In October of 1997, PepsiCo spun-off Pizza Hut and
its two other brands thereby forming Tricon Global
Restaurants Inc. In May of 2002, Tricon Global
Restaurants Inc. changed its name to Yum! Brands,
Inc. to reflect its expanding portfolio of brands.
Today, Pizza Hut is the recognised leader in the

market with restaurants in more than 90 countries


and territories around the world.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Pizza Hut has set up a new entity called PHD,
an edgy brand created to take pizza delivery to
the next level. The first of the four stores in Hong
Kong store opened in April 2008, and to date, PHD

Setting up their first restaurant, the


two founding brothers realised that
the building could only accommodate
a signage with space for just nine
characters. They wanted to use the
word "pizza" in the name, which
would leave only enough space for a
second word with three letters. A
family member suggested the building
looked like a hut - and the famous
name Pizza Hut was born.
