MydecisiontoapplytothepostgraduateprogramintheUniversityofXXXXInstituteforAerospaceStudiesisa
culminationofmylifelongpassionforaeronautics.IfirstfellinlovewithaeroplaneswhenIwasfiveyearsold.
Livinginahousethatwasveryclosetoanairport,Irememberstandingontheopenroofunderthescorchingsun
andwaitingfortheairplanestopassoverhead.BeforeImanagedwritingthealphabetproperly,Ihadgaineda
senseaboutthedifferencesbetweenthesleekswiftfighterjetsandthemonstercargoplaneswiththeirwide
shoulderwingsandhowtheylookedandsoundedsodifferent,althoughIwasnotverysurewhythesegreatthings
didnotfallfromthesky.Thoseangryangelscapturedmysoul.Attheageofeight,Itriedtomakemyfirst
airplanefromaluminumcansandreeds.Despitemyenthusiasm,myfirstcrudemodelscouldneverfly,thoughthat

didnotstopmyimaginationormypassion.AsIgrewolder,Istartedbuildingradiocontrolledmodelaircraft,and
thatwasmyfirstintroductiontotheprimaryrulesofaerodynamics.Myfamilywereamusedbymyapparently
obsessiveinterestinaircraftbutassumedthatthiswasmerelyatemporaryandharmlesshobby.However,
aeronauticswastoremainanareaofpassionateinteresttomeandtobecomecentralinmyleisureactivities,
academicworkandchoicesandinmyprofessionallife.
ItwasthereforenaturalformetochooseAeronauticalEngineeringasmymajorwhenIenteredtheUniversityof
TechnologyinBaghdadinthemid1980sandIwasawardedmybachelordegreeinAeronauticalEngineeringin
1989.IncontrastwithpresentdayIraq,whichisknownprimarilyforconstantstrifeandinstability,theIraqofthe
1980swasamongthemostadvancedArabGulfstatesandrapidlydeveloping.Atthetime,thereweremanylarge
scaleinfrastructureprojects,therewasgreatindustrialdevelopmentandexpansioninthescientificandtechnical
humanresources,andtheeducationsystemofthisperiodwasofasimilarlyadvancedordertoqualifythenext
generationofengineersandscientistswhocouldcontinuethisdevelopment.Althoughthehistoryofthiscountry
tookanunfortunateturnandthisdevelopmentdidnotcontinuelongterm,theeducationthatIreceivedwas,in
hindsight,amongthebestavailableintheregion,oranywhereintheworldforthatmatter.Myuniversity,along
withIraqieducationalinstitutionsgenerally,hadagoodandgrowinginternationalreputation.Thesituationhas
changedsomewhatsincemystudentdaysbutIwishtoemphasizethatIacquiredasoundtheoreticalandscientific
basisformyworkandstudiesundertakensincethattime.
AftergraduationIhadtheopportunitytoworkasanassistantaeronauticalengineerinaprogramthatspecialized
inthedevelopmentandtestingofexperimentalUAV's.Thoseyearsallowedmetogainastronggraspofpractical
aeronauticsandgotmeinvolvedintheprocessofdesignandconstructionmethodsandalsoprovidedmewitha
realistictestofthetheory.Yearslater,IworkedasamaintenanceengineerinaflighttrainingcentrewhereI
developedadifferenttechnicalaspectofaeronauticalengineeringandenrichedmyperceptionofaviation
technology.Aftercontinuouswarfarehaddestroyedtheinfrastructureoftheaerospaceindustryinthatpartofthe
world,Imadeatoughchoiceanddecidedtoworkintheinstallationofgasturbineunitsinoilfieldsofteninavery
remote,harshandinsecure,oneofthetoughestjobsonearth.AlthoughIhadmoreconvenient,rewardingandsafer
optionsatthetime,Ichosethisimmenselychallengingjobtomaintainaconnectionwithmyfavouriteoriginal
disciplinethroughtheratherparallelengineeringconceptsbetweenturbomachineryandaeronautics.Yetthat
practiceprovidedmewiththeexperienceofworkingforGermanandotherinternationalcompaniesthatapplies
strictandsupremestandardsofasophisticatedindustry.
Inthemeantime,Imaintainedmyacademicknowledgebyconstantlyreferringtomytextbooksandupdated
sourcesofaeronauticalengineeringknowledgewhilepatientlywaitingforthedaywhenIcouldpursuehigher
education.WithdiligenceandpersistenceIhaveovercomechallengingobstaclesthatcouldhavedivertedmypath
awayfromaeronauticalengineering.TodayIfinallyseetheopportunityto"getontherighttrack"andwish
wholeheartedlytodoso.Mygoalistoenhanceandformalizemyaeronauticalengineeringknowledgeandskillsin
aprestigiousinstitutionandtoassistinturninggoodideasintousefulrealitybymakingsignificantcontributionsto
aerospaceprojects.
InadditiontostudyingAeronauticalEngineering,Ienrichedmycomprehensionaboutaviationbylearningtofly
inmyhomecountryasasafetypilotsince1987,andIwashappytobeabletousemyflyingskillsinthe
evacuationeffortsduringafloodingcrisisthatoccurredinIraqin1989.IresumedmyactivityasapilotinCanada.
IhavereceivedmyCanadianprivatepilotlicenseandIamcurrentlyworkingontheCanadiancommercialpilot
licensing.InflyingIhavefoundaninvaluableteachingaidwheretheorycanbecomerealityandthisisoneofthe
greatjoysofthesubject.
IcametoCanadatostartanewandproductivelifeformyselfandmyfamily,acountrythatpresentsmewiththe
opportunitytoresumemypursuitofmyprofessionalandeducationalobjectives.Ibelievethatthevalueof
someoneslifeliesinhisorhercontributiontothegoodofall.Ihavealwaysfeltthataeronauticsisthefieldwhere
IcangivemybestandwhereImakeapositivecontributiontothissociety.IbelievethatjoiningUXXXwillallow
metorealizemypotentialandtoapplymyskillsandpassiontotheadvancementofaerospacetechnology.

MyparticularareasofinterestareFlightDynamics,AircraftDesign,FlightSimulationandAirBreathing
Propulsion.IhaveseveralideasthatIbelieveareworthyofinvestigationanddevelopment.Oneidea,forinstance,
relatestotheaerodynamicsoftheliftcoupling.Ibelievethatthereisanintriguingpotentialfortheuseofmultiple
interactingairfoilstoachievehigheraerodynamicperformancethanthatofthetraditionalsingleairfoil.Iamalso
interestedinexploringthepossibilityofdevelopingavariableairfoilplanewhereaflexwingisenabledto
changeitsairfoilsectioninresponsetotheflightconditions.Ibelievethiscanbearealisticdesigninlightofthe
continuousintroductionofsuperiorcompositematerials.Anothersubjectofmyinterestistointroduce
standardizedaerodynamicformulaeforthetriplaneconfiguration(foreplanewingtail)sotheycanbereadily
adoptedingeneralaviationdesigns.Iwouldalsoliketomentionasamotivatingfield,thepromisingpotentialsin
UAVsanddronesthatcanopennewhorizonsforexoticaerodynamics.MyapplicationtojoinUXXXprogramis
anaspirationforacquiringtheadvancedknowledgethatwouldenablemetocontributetothedevelopmentof
someoftheseinspiringengineeringconcepts.
Iamwelltraveledandhavehappilystudied,workedandsocializedwithpeoplefrommanyculturalandsocial
backgrounds.Ihaveworkedinmanyanddifferenttypesoftaskteamsandexperiencedthepowerofcooperation
andthesharedjoyofaccomplishment.Iappreciatethedynamicsofasuccessfulteamandtheskillsofcoordinated
workwithothersinordertoreachacommongoal.Ilookforwardtoextendingthisexperienceintheprogram.I
alsobelievethatmysubstantialexperienceofprojectmanagementhasequippedmewiththeplanning,analytical
andorganizationalskillsthatenablemetoundertakeaneffectualroleintheprogram.
