Answer ALL Questions
1.
Mention the geometrical properties and mechanical properties of a steel beam section
required to find its elastic critical stress.
2.
Where does the neutral axis lie for symmetrical steel section? State why?
3.
What is web crippling? Mention the check to be performed for web crippling as per
IS 800-1984 recommendation.
4.
5.
Why bearing stiffeners are required in plate girders? What are the checks to be performed
while designing for a bearing stiffener?
6.
Mention the various loads required to be considered while designing a gantry girder as per
IS 800-1984.
7.
Write down the components of a rectangular flat bottomed over head steel water tank.
8.
Give the permissible stresses in water tank under direct tension and bending tension or
bending compression of plates.
9.
10.
11.
An ISWB 500 section is used as a simply supported beam of span 8m and restrained
against torsional rotation at its ends. Find the maximum uniformly distributed load
(including its self weight) that the section can carry as per IS 800-1984 if the beam is
(i)
(ii)
Laterally unsupported.

20 mm dia rivets.
Design the end bearing stiffeners and required intermediate stiffeners along with their
connection details for the plate girder given in question number 12 as per IS 800-1984.
Sketch the connection details of the end bearing stiffeners and intermediate stiffeners
neatly.
14.
An elevated rectangular pressed steel water tank, open at its top is required to have a
capacity of 1,00,000 litres with a free board of not less than 150 mm. The bottom of the
tank is 12m above the ground level. Using 1.35m x 1.35m standard pressed steel plates
and suitable allowable stresses, design the tank plates, stays and supporting beams.
15.
Design the staging for the water tank given in question number 14, if the staging consists
of 4 columns spaced at 4m x 4m. Assume intensity of wind pressure as 2.0 kN/m2 and the
column is divided into 3 panels.
16.
Design an I-section purlin to support galvanized corrugated iron roof sheet. The purlins are
1.8 m apart over the roof trusses and spaced at 5 m centre to centre. The roof surface has
an inclination of 30 to the horizontal. The weight of galvanized corrugated iron sheet is
133.1 N/m2. The wind load on roof surface normal to the roof is 1.5 kN/m2.
