ABOUT THE TEACHER

Hello! Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at Jefferson Middle School. My name is Mr. Garcia and I will be
your childs Social Studies teacher this year. This year marks my 17th year teaching at JMS. I graduated from
the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts in History and I have a Master of Arts in Education
from Cal Poly Pomona. My wife and I have 4 children, two boys and two girls, and one is currently in middle
school! I have high expectations for all of my students, and with your support our chances of success increase.

ABOUT THE CLASS

Curious about what your child will be learning this
year? Californias Common Core State Standards
(CCSS) form the backbone for the course. The
standards for grade 7 cover the period between
ancient and modern times, or the medieval world:
life in medieval Europe and the Byzantine Empire;
the history of Muslim empires and the rise of Islam;
the cultures of West Africa; imperial China; medieval
Japan; the Mayan, Incan, and Aztec civilizations; and
Europes Renaissance, Reformation, Scientific
Revolution, and Enlightenment.

GRADES
Grades in class are calculated by percentages.
98 - 100%= A+ 93 - 97% = A 90-92% A88 - 89% = B+ 83 - 87% = B
80-82% B78 - 79% = C+ 73 - 77% = C
70-72% C68 - 69% = D+ 63 67% = D
60-62% D0 - 59% = F
Final grade based on:
50% Assessments: exams and quizzes
30% Classwork and homework.
20% Projects

EXAMS AND PROJECTS

50% of the total grade will be determined by exams and quizzes and 20% on projects. Chapter tests occur
approximately every 1-3 weeks and are posted well in advance. All students will be given the opportunity to
improve a test grade if they are willing to make corrections using the format I will give them.

HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK
Homework is assigned throughout the week and
students are expected to write their homework and
assignments in their agenda. All homework
assignments are clearly written daily on the board and
classwork and homework will also be listed in the class
website (www.garciae204.weebly.com). Classwork
that is not completed in class will be assigned as
homework and will be due after the chapter test.
When absent, any missing work must be made up
within the number of days absent.
Late work will be accepted up to one week before the
end of the quarter at a lower grade! Classwork and
homework should be neat, clearly written or typed, and
not crumpled. If these standards are not met, students
may be asked to redo the assignment.
