HISTORY OF AUBURN
BY AL ALBERTAZZI
of the Grass Valley/Nevada City area and the rich lode of the
Foresthill Divide. It became a stop over for the freight wagons
and stage coaches that plied the foothill roads in those early
days, and both the hotels and the saloons did a thriving business.
The coming of the railroad in 1865 didn't change Auburn's
position as a commercial hub, but it did add a new dimension.
As the gold ran out, many of the miners who had stayed turned
their hand to ranching and the growing of fruit trees. The
railroad allowed the shipping of fruit, mostly apples and pears,
and opened up markets never dreamed of. Every summer the
packing sheds along the track from Roseville to Colfax hummed
with activity as many hundreds of fruit-filled freight cars were
shipped to the rich eastern markets.
The days when fruit was king lasted up into the 1940s but
slowed down due to a blight that infected the trees and from
competition from the factory like farms of the more easily
worked level land of the Sacramento Valley. By then Auburn had
developed a more diverse economy including the development
of the multi-acre DeWitt Center, an expanding industrial park
at the Auburn Airport, and emerging as a world class center for
endurance sports such as the Tevis Cup Ride and the 100- mile
endurance run.
Over the years Auburn has continued to cherish its past,
particularly in "Old Town" where some structures from the gold
rush days still stand down the hill from the historic courthouse
built in 1898. Uptown, in what once was called "East Auburn,"
the State Theater has brought back its old marquee from the
1930s, and the interior has been renovated as a center for the
performing arts. The center is a part of the new Auburn, a city
that hasn't forgotten its past.

For the past 34 years, husband and wife artists Janet and
Rick Nicholson have collaborated to create gracefully beautiful
blown glass works of art, which have been shown in galleries,
businesses, and private homes locally and abroad. From local
installations such as the Roseville Kaiser Medical Building and
Lincolns Twelve Bridges Library, to faraway places like the
Ritz Carlton Club Lounge in Shenzhen, China, the Nicholsons
works add elegance and beauty to public and private spaces all
over the world.
We started out with craft fairs around the country, and after
that we worked with galleries nationally, says Janet. Now we
concentrate mostly on custom commission work and having
the local community come out to the studio for open houses.
Both Janet and Rick Nicholson started out as artists of
different mediums. Janet worked as a photographer with
the University of Southern California while Rick operated a
pottery studio. In 1979, they were married both personally and
artistically, combining their talents to design and create works
of art together. By 1982, they decided to focus their efforts on
glass blowing and sculptures.
Its a collaborative process, so you really need to work as a
team, which separates it from a lot of other arts, which can be
more individual endeavors, explains Janet, who designs the
pieces that Rick sculpts. Even in just making a piece of glass,

public building exhibitions to smaller sculptures such as their

Craft brews and traditional pub fare with a twist
BY ANNE STOKES
Brewer Jennifer Talley has crafted her passion into a career for
the past two decades, with no plans for slowing down anytime
soon. Currently responsible for brewery development at the
Auburn Ale House, Talley has amassed an extensive knowledge
of craft beers, making her a leading expert in her field. Talley is
the first female recipient for the Russell Scherer award, which
recognizes innovation in the craft brewing industry, a judge
at the Great American Beer Festival, and sits on the national
Technical Committee for the Master Brews Association of
America. But its not just work for Talley.
I havent gone to work for 24 years; I just go to the brewery.
I like it because its my craft, its my passion, theres always
something more to learn. Ive never stopped learning, says
Talley. Theres a wonderful physical nature to the work, but
theres a lot of cerebral nature as well. Theres always something
new to learn. And I love drinking craft beers, so that all works
really well.
Talleys work at the Auburn Alehouse has helped to make
the eatery and brewery a popular spot in historic downtown.
The bar features eight core beers that are available year round,
such as their Gold Digger IPA, American River Pale Ale, and
Shanghai Stout. Seasonal offerings include their summertime
Independence Day Pale Ale and McFords Irish Red Ale, available
around St. Patricks Day. Their Old Prospector BarleywineStyle Ale, which is aged for over six months in locally sourced
Zinfandel barrels, is released around the holidays.
For something a little stronger, Auburn Alehouse also has an
extensive selection of American whiskies and Scotches as well.
On occasion, brewers release specialty brews, such as
their ZZ Hop Triple IPA and their Hop Donkey Imperial Red Ale,
which recently won silver at the Great American Beer Festival
in Colorado.
The brewers specials are ones that we stick in there when
we have time in our rotating brewing schedule, explains King.
Theres not a set schedule for those, theyre just little gifts that
the brewers give us when they have time to do them.
To pair with the wide selections of libations on tap and
bottled, Auburn Alehouse has a diverse menu of traditional pub
fare and finer dining fare.
Its a twist on normal pub grub, says King. We offer fresh
California cuisine, everything from fresh salads to organic
Caprese salads that we source straight from an organic farm in
Auburn, to fish and chips and a really good cheeseburger.

Auburn Iron Works has been operating under various names as a blacksmith shop
for over 140 years. Built over the Boardman Canal when the Central Pacific Railroad
reached East Auburn and the depot there was Auburns bustling hub, Auburn Iron
Works continues to provide necessary services to the community through old-fashioned blacksmithing and state-of-the-art welding technology and automation. This
thriving business provides both custom fabrication and vital equipment repair. In
1973, the Harris family purchased this blacksmith shop through their parent company
Harris Industrial Gases, founded in 1936 and now a four-generation family corporation. Theyve added a complete steel warehouse, medical, industrial and specialty gases,
along with a full line of welding equipment and supplies.

For locals in the know, Ikedas is the place to grab lunch. And pie.
Originally opened in the 1970s as a produce stand by Sam
and Sally Ikeda, the market has evolved to offer not only fresh
seasonal fruit grown at the Ikedas orchard a mere mile away
from the store, but also specialty gourmet items, wine, craft
microbrews, their famous pies, and their equally famous
hamburgers.
Originally we were well known for our produce, said Steve
Ikeda, vice president and second generation store owner. My
dad was a farmer and instead of growing fruit and selling it to
the wholesale market, he wanted to go from farmer to retail. It
was popular because it was, and still is, hard to get true treeripened fruit.
In order to make better use of all the peaches, plums,
nectarines, blackberries, and apples grown on the familys 40acre orchard, Steve and his brother Glen expanded the business
to include a bakery in the early 1980s. From day one, the
delectable, made-from-scratch pies were a hit, and even today,
they have a tendency to run out at the end of the day. For those

With the American River running through it, white water rafting
is undoubtedly one of the most popular things to do in the
Auburn area. With the close proximity of American Rivers South,
Middle, and North Forks, there are whitewater adventures
suitable for beginners, experts, and anyone in between.
Auburn is the gateway to the most popular white water
rafting region in the Western United States, said Deric Rothe,
owner of Sierra Whitewater Rafting. Its super fun for families
and weve taken people from age 7 to 75. Its thrilling and its
fun, and when its 100 degrees outside with waves and cool
water splashing in your face its great fun.
During the season, which runs through the end of September,
Sierra Whitewater Rafting offers daily guided tours. After Labor
Day, tours are available on the weekends.

Its really a cute little Foothill lake, Peach said. That area is
a great big swimming hole. Its really popular with the kids. You
might see some wildlife, you might see an otter down there,
you might see a beaver.
The Olmstead Loop, in the Knickerbocker Creek Area, is also
a popular trail for cyclists, hikers, and equestrians. According
to Peach, the oak woodland trails, including Pointed Rocks and
Pig Farm trail, offer a completely different character than trails
in the canyons.
You can leave the canyon and get out into the rolling Foothills,
says Peach. This whole area is grazing and farm land. There a
whole trail network out here that connects with the Olmstead
Loop, which goes out and around the whole [Knickerbocker
Creek] area. This one is particularly nice in the spring, with the
wildflowers.
For further information, the Protect American River Canyons

which covers trail maps, whitewater guides, plant and animal
identification, and the areas rich history. The American River
Insiders Guide to Recreation, Ecology, and Cultural History
of the North, Middle, and South Forks is available online at

100-Mile Endurance Run
The Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run is considered to
be the one of the most physically challenging races in the world.
The 100.2 mile course covers the middle portion of the Western
States Trail, starting at Squaw Valley and finishing at Placer
High School in Auburn. Racers climb 18,000 feet and descend
almost 23,000 feet through deep canyons and high mountains,
much of which is only accessible by foot, horse or helicopter.
Runners face extreme risks from heat stroke to hypothermia,
altitude sickness, and wildlife hazards, but 21 aid stations and
10 major medical checkpoints are located throughout the route
to keep racers safe. Spectators can catch a glimpse of runners
in several spots, including the Squaw Valley start, checkpoints
at Robinson Flat, Foresthill, and No Hands Bridge, as well as the
finish line at Placer High Schools stadium.
Tevis Cup
The Western States Trail Ride, more popularly known as the
Tevis Cup, is the oldest modern day endurance ride. Held
annually since 1955, the 100 mile course runs from the starting
line at Robie Equestrian Park in Tahoe to Auburns Gold Country
Fairgrounds. Racers and their mounts have just 24 hours to
complete the course which features abrupt canyon descents,
steep mountain inclines, and crossing the American River at
its confluence. The race is sanctioned by American Endurance
Ride Conference, and safety is taken very seriously. Veterinary
Emergency Response Teams from UC Davis are on stand-by
and mounts have to be judged fit to continue throughout
course at multiple vet checks.
Fast Fridays
Friday nights in Auburn are filled with the sounds of motorbike
races! The weekly events combine the adrenaline rush of
speedway motorcycle races with family-friendly activities like
bounce houses, climbing walls and entertaining half-time
shows. The track hosts Youth Speed and Pee Wee races, as well
as adult competitions. The track also hosts the Speedway and
AMA Youth National Championships in August.

Auburn River Canyon Overlook
With plenty of parking, this is a great place to view the American River as it winds its way
west as it merges with the Sacramento River. Check out the initial diggings for Auburn
Dam that was never built. From the Overlook you can access the Auburn Skate Park and
trails that lead into the Auburn Recreation Area and down to confluence of the North
and Middle Forks of American River.
Located at the Auburn Airport near Wings Restaurant, is a stunning Veterans Memorial.
Crafted by renowned artist Doug Van Howd, the memorial features a bronze statue of
WWII fighter pilot Colonial Bud Anderson and his famous P-51 Old Crow.

at any one of our fine local restaurants who pride themselves on using locally sourced
meat, poultry and produce. Visit visitplacer.com for a local dining guide and satisfy your
hunger for the Auburn experience!
