HISTORY OF AUBURN
BY AL ALBERTAZZI

Auburn was one of the earliest towns to spring up along

the west slope of the Sierra Nevada shortly after gold was
discovered at Sutter's Mill in Coloma in 1848. A few months
after the discovery, a Frenchman named Claude Chana was
part of a party of gold seekers traveling cross-country toward
Coloma. Camped at a site not far from where his statue now
stands in Old Town Auburn, Chana tried his hand at panning in
what would become known as Auburn Ravine Creek. His first
pan-full turned up three fair sized nuggets, and Auburn became
its own goldfield.
Much of the gold was in the form of dust washed from the
local streams, but sizeable nuggets were frequently found.
The old Placer Herald noted that "a group of miners at Spanish
Flat (within today's city limits) found a lump of gold worth a
thousand dollars" and that Mr. Botts took out a piece of gold
weighing 8 ounces.
It was also noted that miners were digging up the street
right to the entrance of the American Hotel.
Those miners were a hard working, hard drinking bunch, and
they liked their new town, and wanted it to be the winner in an
election to choose the county seat. Thanks to the enthusiasm
and activism of the miners, Auburn won that distinction in an
election in which, oddly enough, more votes were cast than
there were eligible voters in the county.
Most of the gold in the Auburn area was found on or near
the surface, and within a few years the easy picking had run
out. Some of the miners began to drift away in search of a new
bonanza, but Auburn, unlike some gold rush towns that have
become footnotes to history, survived and even thrived. The
difference was location. Auburn stood part way between the
supply center of Sacramento and the deep hard rock mines

of the Grass Valley/Nevada City area and the rich lode of the
Foresthill Divide. It became a stop over for the freight wagons
and stage coaches that plied the foothill roads in those early
days, and both the hotels and the saloons did a thriving business.
The coming of the railroad in 1865 didn't change Auburn's
position as a commercial hub, but it did add a new dimension.
As the gold ran out, many of the miners who had stayed turned
their hand to ranching and the growing of fruit trees. The
railroad allowed the shipping of fruit, mostly apples and pears,
and opened up markets never dreamed of. Every summer the
packing sheds along the track from Roseville to Colfax hummed
with activity as many hundreds of fruit-filled freight cars were
shipped to the rich eastern markets.
The days when fruit was king lasted up into the 1940s but
slowed down due to a blight that infected the trees and from
competition from the factory like farms of the more easily
worked level land of the Sacramento Valley. By then Auburn had
developed a more diverse economy including the development
of the multi-acre DeWitt Center, an expanding industrial park
at the Auburn Airport, and emerging as a world class center for
endurance sports such as the Tevis Cup Ride and the 100- mile
endurance run.
Over the years Auburn has continued to cherish its past,
particularly in "Old Town" where some structures from the gold
rush days still stand down the hill from the historic courthouse
built in 1898. Uptown, in what once was called "East Auburn,"
the State Theater has brought back its old marquee from the
1930s, and the interior has been renovated as a center for the
performing arts. The center is a part of the new Auburn, a city
that hasn't forgotten its past.

General Gomez
Arts & Events Center
Liberation. Independence. Freedom. Expression.
BY ANNE STOKES

The General Gomez Arts & Events Center, located in historic

downtown Auburn, is an artistic focal point for the community.
The venue features ever-revolving exhibitions of paintings, mixed
media, musical performances, and other artistic expressions
in 10,000 square feet of showroom space. The gallery houses
Placer Arts, a non-profit organization that supports arts and
sponsors events throughout the county. The gallery also
showcases eight artists-in-residence, whose work ranges from
lithographs to fine jewelry, and even adorned gourds.
General Gomez provides an art gallery and event space for
the community. Often we try to pair [exhibitions] with events
that are happening in town during the course of the year, says
General Manager David Burns. The vast majority [of art] comes
from local artists. We have a great group of artists around here
and it seems like its growing all the time.
The events center also serves as an events venue, which can
accommodate up to 200 people for corporate events, private
parties, and even graduations, lending an elegant art gallery
ambiance to any occasion.

Nicholson Blown Glass

Local artists create glittering glass works of art
BY ANNE STOKES

For the past 34 years, husband and wife artists Janet and
Rick Nicholson have collaborated to create gracefully beautiful
blown glass works of art, which have been shown in galleries,
businesses, and private homes locally and abroad. From local
installations such as the Roseville Kaiser Medical Building and
Lincolns Twelve Bridges Library, to faraway places like the
Ritz Carlton Club Lounge in Shenzhen, China, the Nicholsons
works add elegance and beauty to public and private spaces all
over the world.
We started out with craft fairs around the country, and after
that we worked with galleries nationally, says Janet. Now we
concentrate mostly on custom commission work and having
the local community come out to the studio for open houses.
Both Janet and Rick Nicholson started out as artists of
different mediums. Janet worked as a photographer with
the University of Southern California while Rick operated a
pottery studio. In 1979, they were married both personally and
artistically, combining their talents to design and create works
of art together. By 1982, they decided to focus their efforts on
glass blowing and sculptures.
Its a collaborative process, so you really need to work as a
team, which separates it from a lot of other arts, which can be
more individual endeavors, explains Janet, who designs the
pieces that Rick sculpts. Even in just making a piece of glass,

its almost impossible to do it by yourself. You really have to

have a good assistant because things happen so quickly, you
cant just put it down. You have to follow the piece all the way
through. It traditionally takes two people, sometimes three or
four people to make a piece.
I think its the immediacy and the focus and the flexibility
of it. [Glass] really is a versatile material, explains Rick of his
shift in artistic focus over three decades ago. Therere some
pretty strict technical parameters, but within those parameters
its very versatile. I like the colors that are available and just the
fact that you can make almost anything you can think of if you
can figure out how to adapt the process.
While the Nicholsons North Auburn studio is generally
only open to the public by appointment, there are several
opportunities throughout the year for collectors to get a
glimpse inside the artists workspace. For many years now,
they have opened their workshop to the public as a stop on
the North Auburn Spring and Autumn Art Studios Tour, which
highlights myriad artists and mediums throughout the Placer
County region. During the holiday season, Nicholson Blown
Glass studios open up their doors for several weekends around
Thanksgiving for their Holiday Open Studio, selling hand-made
glass blown ornaments and other holiday gift items.

Craft brews and traditional pub fare with a twist
BY ANNE STOKES

Brewer Jennifer Talley has crafted her passion into a career for
the past two decades, with no plans for slowing down anytime
soon. Currently responsible for brewery development at the
Auburn Ale House, Talley has amassed an extensive knowledge
of craft beers, making her a leading expert in her field. Talley is
the first female recipient for the Russell Scherer award, which
recognizes innovation in the craft brewing industry, a judge
at the Great American Beer Festival, and sits on the national
Technical Committee for the Master Brews Association of
America. But its not just work for Talley.
I havent gone to work for 24 years; I just go to the brewery.
I like it because its my craft, its my passion, theres always
something more to learn. Ive never stopped learning, says
Talley. Theres a wonderful physical nature to the work, but
theres a lot of cerebral nature as well. Theres always something
new to learn. And I love drinking craft beers, so that all works
really well.
Talleys work at the Auburn Alehouse has helped to make
the eatery and brewery a popular spot in historic downtown.
The bar features eight core beers that are available year round,
such as their Gold Digger IPA, American River Pale Ale, and
Shanghai Stout. Seasonal offerings include their summertime

Independence Day Pale Ale and McFords Irish Red Ale, available
around St. Patricks Day. Their Old Prospector BarleywineStyle Ale, which is aged for over six months in locally sourced
Zinfandel barrels, is released around the holidays.
For something a little stronger, Auburn Alehouse also has an
extensive selection of American whiskies and Scotches as well.
On occasion, brewers release specialty brews, such as
their ZZ Hop Triple IPA and their Hop Donkey Imperial Red Ale,
which recently won silver at the Great American Beer Festival
in Colorado.
The brewers specials are ones that we stick in there when
we have time in our rotating brewing schedule, explains King.
Theres not a set schedule for those, theyre just little gifts that
the brewers give us when they have time to do them.
To pair with the wide selections of libations on tap and
bottled, Auburn Alehouse has a diverse menu of traditional pub
fare and finer dining fare.
Its a twist on normal pub grub, says King. We offer fresh
California cuisine, everything from fresh salads to organic
Caprese salads that we source straight from an organic farm in
Auburn, to fish and chips and a really good cheeseburger.

AUBURN IRON WORKS

HARRIS INDUSTRIAL GASES

Living in Auburn History Since 1865

Photo 1974

Auburn Iron Works has been operating under various names as a blacksmith shop
for over 140 years. Built over the Boardman Canal when the Central Pacific Railroad
reached East Auburn and the depot there was Auburns bustling hub, Auburn Iron
Works continues to provide necessary services to the community through old-fashioned blacksmithing and state-of-the-art welding technology and automation. This
thriving business provides both custom fabrication and vital equipment repair. In
1973, the Harris family purchased this blacksmith shop through their parent company
Harris Industrial Gases, founded in 1936 and now a four-generation family corporation. Theyve added a complete steel warehouse, medical, industrial and specialty gases,
along with a full line of welding equipment and supplies.

Golfing in the Foothills

Beautiful terrain and challenging courses make for better golfers
BY ANNE STOKES

A good golf course is all about balance: mixing manicured greens

with natural terrain, unique holes that test your game without
being exceedingly difficult, creating a game thats challenging
yet relaxing at the same time. Aesthetically pleasing scenery
doesnt hurt either.
Auburn has several such golf courses to enjoy. The alpine
landscape not only makes for beautiful views, but lends itself
to more exciting game play. And the Foothills elevation makes
for agreeable weather year round.
Were up in the Foothills, so were usually a little cooler
during the summer than in the Valley, explains Shawn Kelly,
PGA Head Golf Professional at The Ridge Golf Course. We
always say were above the fog and below the snow, so in the
wintertime were in exceptionally good shape and were usually
open twelve months a year. Its always in great shape.
Auburns proximity to both Sacramento and Tahoe make it a
convenient midway stop for travelers going up to, and coming
down from, the mountains.
Its really a short drive up the hill from Sacramento and

Roseville, says Kelly, adding that, We do have a lot of people

who come from Reno and Tahoe [especially] in the winter when
its cold up there, were the first green grass down the hill, so
we get a lot of play in the wintertime.
The Ridge Golf Course is one of Auburns popular places to
get in a round or spend the day working on your game. The 170
acre well-maintained course is located away from residential
areas and is studded with oaks, rock outcroppings, and a
hundred foot elevation change, which makes for a hill course.
In 2004 and 2005, the Ridge hosted LGPA events, giving it
championship style credentials. The Ridge Bar and Grill is onsite and open for lunches from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and the
full pro-shop offers top of the line merchandise and clothing.
Its not an easy golf course, but its a fun challenging golf
course, says Kelly. Therere lots of bunkers out there, we have
water hazards, and theres some rolling terrain. Some of the
shots into the greens are very demanding, but it makes it fun, it
makes it challenging. It allows you to test your game a little bit
and see how good you really can be in this game.

Ikedas California Country

Market and Pie Shop
Where Auburn goes for pie
BY ANNE STOKES

For locals in the know, Ikedas is the place to grab lunch. And pie.
Originally opened in the 1970s as a produce stand by Sam
and Sally Ikeda, the market has evolved to offer not only fresh
seasonal fruit grown at the Ikedas orchard a mere mile away
from the store, but also specialty gourmet items, wine, craft
microbrews, their famous pies, and their equally famous
hamburgers.
Originally we were well known for our produce, said Steve
Ikeda, vice president and second generation store owner. My
dad was a farmer and instead of growing fruit and selling it to
the wholesale market, he wanted to go from farmer to retail. It
was popular because it was, and still is, hard to get true treeripened fruit.
In order to make better use of all the peaches, plums,
nectarines, blackberries, and apples grown on the familys 40acre orchard, Steve and his brother Glen expanded the business
to include a bakery in the early 1980s. From day one, the
delectable, made-from-scratch pies were a hit, and even today,
they have a tendency to run out at the end of the day. For those

who prefer their pies of a savory nature, Ikedas chicken pot

pies have been popular sellers too. More recently, the market
started offering fresh seasonal wild salmon (from the spring
through summer) and fresh Dungeness crab from Bodega Bay
from November through the springtime.
Keeping in that savory vein, Ikedas is also a popular spot
to grab a burger. Lunchtime crowds fill up the restaurant and
outdoor patio seating every day around noon with locals who
come to enjoy their Famous Burgers, Teriyaki burgers, tri-tip
sandwiches, giant onion rings, and a rotating selection of craft
microbrews on tap, such as Auburn Alehouse, Knee Deep, and
Lagunitas.
Instead of buying hamburger thats already ground, we grind
it here on the premises, said Ikeda. We do it daily. Having
fresher meat helps add to the quality and taste of the burger.
We have a secret 14-herb-and-spice recipe that we use, and
were known for that. It really differentiates us from a lot of
other places.

The State Theatre

Auburns performing arts home since 1930
BY ANNE STOKES

Auburns landmark State Theatre has stood sentry over

downtown Lincoln Street since 1930. Today, the historic building
and venue is owned and run by the Auburn Placer Performing
Arts Center, a non-profit organization that strives to restore and
maintain it as an important piece of Auburns history.
Aside from several periods of restorations and construction,
the State Theatre has been in continuous operation for more
than eight decades. The APPAC regularly hosts independent
movie showings, concert series, community events, and
live theater productions. The venue houses both the Placer
Community Theater and Take Note Troupe theater companies.
We do movie series, we do two movies a month, says
Janis Wikoff, executive director of Auburn Placer Performing
Arts Center. We do documentaries, a smattering of classic
movies, and bio pictures. New releases [and] independent films
that dont come to Auburn that people would have to travel to
Sacramento or Grass Valley to see.
The State Theatre also hosts a wide variety of live music
performances, ranging from world-renowned pianists and jazz
performances to country music and rock-and-roll tribute bands.
We have a pretty big music schedule, says Wikoff. Theres
a huge variety, were trying to meet the demand for variety
because theres a pretty wide-spread music audience in our
area.
Originally a movie theater, the State Theatre had a 1,300seat capacity and in 1937 became one of the towns first air-

conditioned buildings. Since then, the State has gone through

several phases of changes and renovations. In the 1970s, the
theater was reduced in size and split in half, operating two
screens for many years. In 2006, the building was purchased by
the APPAC, who renovated the theaters exterior and restored
the marquis and blade sign. More recently, APPACs fundraising
efforts helped partially restore the theater in 2014 to a larger
size, renovate the stage, and replace the roof.
We were able to recapture the feeling of the old theater,
[although] we were not able to expand all the way back to where
it originally was, says Wikoff. We were able to accomplish a
340 seat theater with full lights and sounds.
APPAC was able to accomplish such restorations through
the support of several fundraising efforts, including the Project
Auburn and Tear down the wall, Bring up the Arts campaigns,
which drew private and public financial backers who made
Auburns theater arts a priority.
Were very happy about being able to be so focused on
Placer and Nevada Counties. I think thats really important to
people and so weve tried to make that important to us, Wikoff
said. Theres a regional audience, I think we draw people
from about 100 miles. We just hope to keep growing and keep
bringing people the variety that theyre interested in.

Placer Nature Center

Connecting kids to nature
BY ANNE STOKES

Since 1991, the educational programs offered at the Placer

Nature Center have served to connect children to the natural
world that surrounds them. From mud pie making to star gazing,
the center has something to interest just about everyone.
Open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays, the volunteersupported center offers kids a wide variety of activities to
educate and entertain them. Science Saturdays are usually twohour long programs that focus on a different nature or sciencethemed subject each week. The center also offers special
programming for children under the age of 5, courtesy of a
grant from the First 5 California program. During the week, the
center hosts nature themed school field trips and home-school
programs, to compliment curriculums.
We do a lot of experiments with microscopes, well do
nature crafts, well take them out with a magnifying glass and

identify things, we have kid-friendly binoculars and well go bird

hunting with those, or looking for bugs in the garden, that kind
of thing, said Executive Director Kimberly Grant. Its a great
place to come year-round. We do have trails up in the Foothills.
Theyre not very long trails, so theyre good for the little ones.
The Placer Nature Center offers programming for older
kids and adults as well. Their Greener Gardener workshops,
offered as a part of Science Saturdays, cover composting and
vermiculture. Throughout the year, astronomer Don Machholz
leads stargazing events as well.
What we hope that children and parents both get is a way
to connect with nature. Thats what were here for, to help them
find that connection, Grant said. We hope kids reduce their
fear of nature through interacting with it and realize that its
biodiversity is an essential part of our living.

White water rafting

The American River offers fun for beginner and expert rafters
BY ANNE STOKES

With the American River running through it, white water rafting
is undoubtedly one of the most popular things to do in the
Auburn area. With the close proximity of American Rivers South,
Middle, and North Forks, there are whitewater adventures
suitable for beginners, experts, and anyone in between.
Auburn is the gateway to the most popular white water
rafting region in the Western United States, said Deric Rothe,
owner of Sierra Whitewater Rafting. Its super fun for families
and weve taken people from age 7 to 75. Its thrilling and its
fun, and when its 100 degrees outside with waves and cool
water splashing in your face its great fun.
During the season, which runs through the end of September,
Sierra Whitewater Rafting offers daily guided tours. After Labor
Day, tours are available on the weekends.

See Auburn by trail!

The Auburn State Recreation Area trails offer a plethora of outdoor adventure
BY ANNE STOKES

The Auburn State Recreation Area is a treasure trove of

adventure opportunities Novice hikers, experienced backpackers,
mountain bikers, rock climbers, whitewater rafters, and horse
trail riders all have room to enjoy nearly 35,000 acres along
48 miles of the North and Middle Forks of the American River.
Nearly a million visitors come annually to enjoy the wilderness,
especially the more than 100 miles of trails that wind around
the Foothill terrain.
Everybody wants to get out and experience nature in a
quality way, said Eric Peach, Conservation Chairman of the
Protect American River Canyons non profit group. We have
good access here, were close to urban areas, so this is a
magnet for all different kinds of recreation. Not only does it offer
challenging adventure opportunities, but offers family picnics,
swimming, and fishing opportunities.
The trails are the hub of the Auburn outdoor experience.
Theyre like the spokes of a wagon wheel; they go out in
different directions. You can find trails of different abilities and
experiences.
For hikers looking for an easy to moderate trip, Peach
suggests the Stagecoach Trail, which runs from Russell Road to
the Foresthill Bridge that spans the North Fork of the American
River. For longer, but similarly easy trail, start at the American
River Canyon Overlook and follow the Western States Trail to
the Confluence.
If your day plans include swimming and hiking, the Lake
Clementine Trail offers plenty of aquatic recreational opportunity.
Lake Clementine is a great destination for kayaking, paddle

boarding, and boating. Bicyclists can also make good use of the
Clementine Trail Loop, which runs north from the Confluence,
around the Culvert Trail, and back along the Confluence Trail,
alongside the Middle Fork of the American River.
Its really a cute little Foothill lake, Peach said. That area is
a great big swimming hole. Its really popular with the kids. You
might see some wildlife, you might see an otter down there,
you might see a beaver.
The Olmstead Loop, in the Knickerbocker Creek Area, is also
a popular trail for cyclists, hikers, and equestrians. According
to Peach, the oak woodland trails, including Pointed Rocks and
Pig Farm trail, offer a completely different character than trails
in the canyons.
You can leave the canyon and get out into the rolling Foothills,
says Peach. This whole area is grazing and farm land. There a
whole trail network out here that connects with the Olmstead
Loop, which goes out and around the whole [Knickerbocker
Creek] area. This one is particularly nice in the spring, with the
wildflowers.
For further information, the Protect American River Canyons
organization has published a comprehensive area guide,
which covers trail maps, whitewater guides, plant and animal
identification, and the areas rich history. The American River
Insiders Guide to Recreation, Ecology, and Cultural History
of the North, Middle, and South Forks is available online at
PARCs website, and at the Placer County Visitors Bureau in
Auburn.

The acorn grinding rocks in the

Confluence area are visible reminders
of the many Maidu Nisenan Indian village sites
that flourished along the American River and the
canyon rim. The Maidu Nisenan fished for
salmon, hunted game, and gathered acorns. Both
edible and medicinal plants were collected as well.
Their rich seasonal calendar marked time with
Big Time dance ceremonies in the village
round house called the kum. The Maidu
Interpretive Center, located in
Roseville (916-774-5934), provides
programs and exhibits that
illustrate the connection between
the people, their culture, and the
natural world.

River History

The Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge, also

known locally as No Hands Bridge, is the most
recognizable historical monument in the Confluence area. The Pacific Portland Cement Company completed the 170 foot long, triple-arch span
concrete bridge in 1912. At that time it was the
longest concrete arch railroad bridge in the world.
The bridge and connecting rail line were built to
haul limestone from the Portland Cement Quarry,
located a mile up river on the Middle Fork, to the
Southern Pacific main line in Auburn. In 2004
the Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge was
added to the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2014, the bridge was designated
California Historic Landmark #1051.

PARC proposed California
State Wild & Scenic River
designation: for a 16 mile

In 1848 the discovery of gold by James

Marshall at Sutters Mill on the
South Fork in Coloma, spread a
Gold Rush to the North and Middle
Forks. The world rushed in to pan
and dig the precious metal from the
river and canyons. Both the North and
Middle Forks were intensively mined,
and sizeable towns and camps grew up within the
canyons and along the rivers to support the
mining operations. Today, the supply roads and
trails the miners used are the nucleus of the
recreational trail system in the Auburn State
Recreation Area. The Gold Rush Mining
Museum is located in the historic Auburn Depot,
(see Local Museums) and offers a glimpse into
Placer Countys Gold Rush history.

The Auburn State Recreation Area*, an

extraordinary recreational, historical and
scenic gem, is located in the Sierra Nevada
Foothills along 48 miles of the North and
Middle Forks of the American River
stretching from Auburn to Colfax and
Foresthill. The Auburn SRA provides high
quality open space, wildlife habitat and
diverse recreational opportunities deep in
Californias legendary Gold Country. The
American Rivers rich cultural tapestry
includes influences from the Maidu
Nisenan Indians, Spanish settlers and Gold
Rush miners. The river was named Rio de
los Americanos by the Spanish. Today, the
pristine river and canyon trails offer
visitors a variety of recreational activities
to responsibly enjoy. Major recreational
uses include hiking, mountain biking,
horseback riding, whitewater boating,
fishing, swimming, gold panning,
picnicking, and much more.

Tevis Cup, is the oldest modern day endurance ride. Held

steep mountain inclines, and crossing the American River at
its confluence. The race is sanctioned by American Endurance

Emergency Response Teams from UC Davis are on stand-by

treats, and music fills the air from carolers. Following this event, Santa will continue to
frequent Downtown Auburn, in case you forgot to tell him something the first time. The
festival will take place on Lincoln Way, between the Clock Tower and Harrison Street, on
December 13th, 2015.

Auburn River Canyon Overlook
With plenty of parking, this is a great place to view the American River as it winds its way
west as it merges with the Sacramento River. Check out the initial diggings for Auburn
Dam that was never built. From the Overlook you can access the Auburn Skate Park and
trails that lead into the Auburn Recreation Area and down to confluence of the North
and Middle Forks of American River.

sculpture, oils & acrylics, silk dyes to copper and glass sculptures. Stop by for a unique
