Course Overview

Materials

This high school prep course will build upon the writing, reading,
speaking and listening components fundamental to middle school
English. Our readings will include a variety of genres, time periods,
authors and themes. Writings will include a personal narrative, an
analytical essay, creative poetry, fiction and a well-documented research
project. In addition to shorter and longer speaking assignments,
students will regularly participate in Socratic Seminars, fishbowl
discussions, speech clubs, and extensive group work.

Through the course, students should be able to identify and explain


the content, context, language, structure, technique and style of
various texts. They should also be able to employ organizational
structures while using referencing and formatting tools to create a
presentation style. In addition, they should be able to produce texts
that demonstrate thought, imagination and sensitivity while
exploring and considering new perspectives and ideas arising form
personal engagement with the creative process. Throughout the
entire year, students should be able to use appropriate and varied
vocabulary, sentence structures and forms of expression with
emphasis on writing and speaking in the appropriate register and
style.

Homework Policy
Students may receive up to 30 minutes of homework per night. If no
homework has been assigned, students are required to read an English
novel, short story, or poetry for at least 30 minutes.

Managebac Gradebook
For Language and Literature, all summative assessment tasks will
be recorded in Managebac. The students will receive both levels of
achievements and comments as feedback.
