Gala theatres. A three screen multiplex, the Pitt Centre opened on the 9th April 1976 premiering
Mahogany, The Romantic Englishwoman and Caddie.
The Liberty, formerly the Grand and then the Rialto, was located at 232 Pitt Street Sydney. The Liberty and

Live In. Previously known as the Hoyts Newsluxe newsreel cinema, the

on the 30th January 1975 with Between Wars as the last film.
During the twenty three years as a multiplex, the Pitt Centre screened

After the closure of the 70mm equipped Forum and

Paramount cinemas, Greater Union exhibited their key
city 70mm releases at the Barclay cinema, Pitt Centre and
State theatre. The Lyceum theatre which was a late entry
into 70mm Dolby Stereo, was equipped during the
development and subsequent construction of the four
screen Greater Union Centre on George Street.

Formerly known as the Lyceum Hall

the Lyceum was rebuilt in 1918 as
the Hoyts Lyceum Theatre and in
1928 when under the direction of Union Theatres, showcased The Jazz Singer on the
29th December 1928. The Lyceum was plagued by numerous fires with the last in 1964
destroying the building interior. Reopening in 1966 with Doctor in Clover, the Lyceum
premiered many Reserved Seating Engagements in 35mm, Half a Sixpence, Oliver,
Winning and Anne of the Thousands Days. The Lyceum was equipped for Dolby Stereo
in 1983 with the reissue of Fantasia,
presented two 70mm releases and closed on
the 29/6/88 with The Whales of August.
