Modeling
Curves
Extend Curve to Reference Curve
An enhancement to the Extend tool in curves
allows a curve to be extended to a reference curve
or an edge. In cases where the curve and
reference curve do not intersect, the curve is
extended either as a linear or natural extension.
Benefits

The three green curves (line, spline and arc) are to

be extended to the orange arc.

Reduced design time

Enhanced user experience

The result using the enhanced Extend tool.

CimatronE 12 CAD for Tooling

Line By Two Directions and Angle

A new option in the Line function allows the user to
define a diagonal line either by:
its angle, distance and two directions, or
two distances and two directions.
This is of particular use when designing the motion
direction for lifters and sliders in the motion
simulator.
Benefits
Simplified design in the motion simulator
Reduced trial and error

To check the motion of the lifter through the motion

simulation, the user defines the motion direction of
the lifter using the new option in the Line function.

CimatronE 12 CAD for Tooling

group as springs

control over the visibility of components

the ability to define whether a group or a

component within a group should be
ignored in the collision calculations in the
Groups tree

control over the display and color of groups

The user is defining a time range (light blue) for the

system to calculate collisions between the groups.
Since the ejection system is not completely designed,
the user indicates that the movement of the ejection
sub-assembly group is to be ignored (shown in red).

There are two modes: motion by collision

analysis or free motions (moving components
without calculating collisions between the
groups). The free motions mode is particularly
useful at the early stages of tool design when
some components are still missing or some
holes have not yet been created.
Particular ranges in the time bar can now be
selected for collision calculation.
It is now possible to do an interference check
at any point on the motion timeline.
Benefits
Easier and simpler use of the Motion Simulator

Folders in Assembly Tree

Large projects are often composed of hundreds of
parts and many sub-assemblies. As a project
progresses, it can be difficult even for an
experienced user to locate a particular component
that was previously used.
CimatronE 12 facilitates better component
management with the ability to create folders in the
assembly tree containing any part or subassembly. Items can be added to the folders simply
by drag-and-drop.
Benefits
Enhanced project management

The user has created three folders for the lifters, cap
screws and ejector pins. Using the drag-and-drop
capability, the user moves the ejector pin into the
Ejector Pins folder.

CimatronE 12 CAD for Tooling

Linked Drawing
Drawing files contain the entire data of the part or
assembly they show. While this allows the user to
work with the drawing file even if it is separated
from the original data, it can result in a large
drawing file size.
In CimatronE 12, a new option enables the
creation of links between the 3D model and the
drawing file, rather than the model being saved
inside the drawing file. As a result, the size of the
drawing file is dramatically reduced.
Benefits
Significant reduction in drawing file size

A special icon appears next to the name of the view

and the sheet name to indicate that it is only linked to
the model and does not contain the original data.

Two views are created in linked mode. In the Fixed

Pocket VoluMill Entry Point Control
There are cases where the user wants to define

CimatronE 12, this capability is also supported for
Pocket VoluMill.
Benefits

CimatronE 12 NC Strategies

Automated Drill
Sequences Supporting Formulas
As many sequences are required to drill groups of holes, the user has to manually match specific
groups to sequences.
In CimatronE 12, more flexible sequences can be created so that more groups are automatically
matched to the sequences.

Use Formulas to Define Geometrical Constraints

In Automated Drill, sequences are automatically
matched to relevant holes based on a list of
constraints.
To allow one sequence to match holes with
different lengths, a range may be used for any
single parameter. For example, the same
sequence can be used on counter-bore holes with
depth 10 to 50 and for a stock with depth 0 to 60.
According to these ranges, the maximum hole
depth that is relevant for this sequence is the
maximum hole depth + the maximum stock depth =
110, which might be too deep.
In CimatronE 12, the user can define a formulabased constraint that include several parameters.
In the above example, the user will limit the hole
depth and the stock depth to be 70.
narrows the automatic matching between the
sequence and selected geometry.
Benefits
Increased automation
Faster programming

76

CimatronE 12 NC Strategies

Conditional Operations in Sequence Definition

A sequence can now include an operation that will
be performed only if a certain condition is met. For
example, if the hole diameter is larger than 14 mm,
a predrill will be undertaken with a 10 mm drill.
Benefits
Reduced number of sequences

Only one sequence was needed to drill these holes

with seven different threads from M6 to M20. Note
the different set of tools and operations that were
used to drill the M6 and M20 holes.

77

CimatronE 12 NC Strategies

Use Formulas in Drill Operation Grid Parameters

CimatronE 12 allows the use of formulas (relations)
in the following procedure grid parameters: top
delta, delta retract, and bottom delta.
This is of particular assistance when using the new
conditional operation capability. For example,
when using Drill-d16, the retract point should be 5
mm, but with Drill-d10, a 3 mm retract point should
be used.
Benefits
Reduced number of sequences
Faster programming with improved automation

production part. It can be used with any metal,
including steel, hardened steel, titanium, or

Entry Point Control

A new option in Rough VoluMill supports pre-drill
operations (mainly for cavities). When using the
new option, the system automatically creates point
entities where the tool plunges.
The points are located at the bottom of the predrilled holes and should be used to program the
pre-drilling operation.
When using this option, Rough VoluMill does not
perform slow helical entry, but plunges directly to
the layers z.
Benefits

Cleanup Improvements
Improved Machining Efficiency With Any Cutter Combination
Usually in Cleanup, the current cutter has a smaller
diameter and a corner radius than the previous
cutter. In such cases, the current cutter can always
machine areas that the previous cutter could not,
and the resulting toolpath is usually smooth and
continuous.
However, sometimes a different combination of
cutters is required. For such cases, CimatronE 12
ensures a more optimized toolpath:
1.

All extra passes that are totally outside of the

unmachined area of the previous cutter are
eliminated.

2.

The connection is smoother between areas of

different machining widths.

The orange fillet has a radius of 10 mm; all the other

radiuses of the part are 40 mm. A finish operation

Support for Multiple Materials

In many cases, the one tool can be used to mill
different materials. However, each material
requires different cutting conditions feed (FZ) and
spin (VC).
In previous versions, in order to support several
materials for one tool geometry, it was necessary
to define several tools (one per material).
In CimatronE 12, a tool can contain different
conditions per different materials. Thus, there is a
need to define only one tool.
When a tool is used in an NC procedure, it brings
with it the relevant cutting conditions according to
the part material specified in the NC Setup.

in such cases, the components are not recognized
as such by the system and, therefore, their visibility
cannot be centrally controlled.
With the Automatic Coloring analysis tool in
CimatronE 12, the user can mark the components
so they can be recognized by the system for
centralized visibility control.
Benefits
Enhanced user experience
