Programs Laedenia Jewell, Chairman

Candace Turner, Co-Chairman
Art is essential to YOUR quality of life!
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Art is essential to your quality of life! Art is the process of deliberately arranging elements
in a way to affect the senses or emotions. It encompasses a diverse range of human
activities, creations and modes of expression including visual and fine art, sculpture,
music, dance, theater, literature, photography and crafts. It allows us to express those
basic instincts that are integral to being human harmony, balance and rhythm. The
artistic experience can be outward reaching or for inner satisfaction.
Art plays an important part in the lives of GFWC club members. It helps to instill
confidence, provides opportunities and broadens ones horizons. Moreover, members are
the catalysts in their communities for encouraging and actively promoting and supporting
all forms of art, both traditional and innovative.
The Arts Community Service Program with its many suggested ideas is designed to inspire
clubwomen to engage the creative ambiance within their lives and create programs and
projects that will serve to educate and provide enjoyment for all members of their
communities. Participation in the arts helps to raise public awareness and serves to
connect club members with the residents of their communities, both young and old. Club
members are encouraged to use the suggested ideas as a guide and to call upon their
imaginations and creative abilities to develop additional projects and activities.
To encourage members to further their own artistic expression and also to recognize the
budding talents of youth, GFWC sponsors several contests in the areas of photography
and creative writing. In addition, GFWC/Georgia sponsors a member craft competition and
a high school senior student art contest. Four scholarships are awarded each year to the
top student artists. Information regarding the Arts Contests can be found immediately
following the Arts CSP section.

SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS FROM GFWC AND GFWC GEORGIA:

GFWC Tifton Twentieth Century Library Club created nine canvas boards holding 400
photographs, newspaper clippings and other unique art pieces created by high school
students. The artwork focused on women in the community and was displayed in a local
museum.
GFWC Service Guild of Covington hosted An evening with Ben Franklin for the
community and its membership. Actor, teacher, and pastor guest portrayed Mr. Franklin in
an amazing drama.
We let the dogs out was a hugely successful project for GFWC Athens-Oconee Junior
Womans Club. When in Athens, look for the brightly painted bulldog statues. Each statue
required a $2,500 contribution and there were 36 plus dogs that have been a bright spot in
this city. Monies made were donated to various charities throughout the years.

CALL TO ACTION
In the GFWC Arts Community Service Program, GFWC clubs will:
RESEARCH, PLAN AND IMPLEMENT projects and programs based on their interests
and the needs that club members believe are important. This is their opportunity to think
outside of the box and do it their way.
REPORT It is imperative that clubs report the projects that they have developed so that,
as an organization, we can better see where the interests of our members lie. Those
statistics can be used in working with and recruiting new GFWC partners, grants and
advocacy opportunities.
Reporting is also important so we can highlight and share your clubs creativity and
interests with our membership. In this way, other clubs can be inspired to either implement
a similar project or use it as a basis for developing their own programs.
The Narrative: While the narrative is optional, it does allow clubs to more fully describe
projects completed and listed on the chart form. It also enhances your chances for an
award.
