Overall Project Design

Using Google sites to create a Website

Purpose
The purpose of this instructional training is to effectively teach teachers how to create a
website (PLE) using Google Sites. This training will only introduce teachers to the basics of setting up a
website. The audience for this training are those teachers who do not have a Website or feel overwhelmed
by technology. The point of this training is that once teachers have established the website they can later
go back and add specifics details. The project does not go into detail on how to set up the individual
website because each teacher will use their website differently. A second training could be offered to
explore design elements such as managing the website layout or webpage design.
The website will be created using Google Sites . Google sites is simple, popular and free to
use as long as you have a Google Email. By the end of this training teachers will be able to repeat the
process and create a new website or modify the one they have already established.. The goal is teaching
the learners how to set up a Google Website. Then through guided practice, repetition, and rehearsal
students will have learned this process so they can repeat it independently or teach it to others. Finally,
having a website will enhance classroom instruction. There are many ways a website classroom can help
teachers and students. Everything from a place to post homework to links with interactive activities on
content. This training represents the first step to get teachers started.

Design choices:
Color scheme (include examples or hex numbers):
The color scheme is going to be three basic colors: blue background, black text,
white inset visual images, red/orange arrows

White- Hex # fffff
Red- Hex # ff000
Colors inside the graphics will vary.
Font styles, sizes, colors (include font style name, size, and color for each element):
In this project there is one font style. However, the font inside the insets may be
different.

Training and Layout

The training for this program will be very simple. It is going to be very direct, as stated by Robert Marzano Offering Overt Instruction was the most important factor affecting students
success. ( as sited by Killian, 2015 June 17). This is going to be a face to face synchronous instruction that walks learnings thru the process of setting up their website. Basically, the learners
are going to be following a Power point presentation. The learners will be given using chrome books and the instructor will need a projector with a computer, The presentation will begin
with a description of the overall goals and the benefits to having a website. Then it will be explained that setting up a Google Sites account is very easy. Each slide is going to have a series of
steps once the class completes all the steps, a website will be completed. It is important to note that this training is going to be focused on setting up the website itself. The exact content of
how to create new pages, and manage the layout of the website will be dealt with in another training
Navigation: In this presentation students will navigate by following the directions given and shown by the instructor. Each page is different in the process to set a Google Sites account. Each
page has is part of a process to set up the site. Students will have verbal and visual displays to guide them thought the process. Usually there is a button that needs to be clicked or
information that needs to be selected to move to the next step.

Title: Welcome
Main Body Text: Googles Sites (Image)

*Purpose of Slide: Grab Attention.

* Asterisk means not on screen but relevant to presentation.

Narration: How many of you are familiar with Google Sites ? ( My audience has no a low level of computer literacy- responses may vary). Well, we are here today to take our first step to create a website
using Google Sites. This is a simple process. However, the goal is to rehearse this process so you are able to do it independently. Then in the future we will have a second training on using the design features
of your Website. Google Sites allows you to create and delete websites very easily. So today we are going to create one site with guided practice and the next will be done independently. This will be an
important step because it will show me that you can repeat the process independently. I usually find instructors present way too much information way too quickly. This is a problem especially if you are
below average with your computer skills. Another problem is that instructors show many options that when you go back independently, you have difficulty remembering what to do. Today we are going to keep
it simple but we are really going to learn these steps so that we do not forget them in 2 days. Today you will need paper and pencil next to your computer. Research shows learner retention is greater when we
take notes with pencil/pen and paper. (Eck, 2013). This is so we can do a little note taking. Okay, are we ready? First, let go over why we should want a website ?
Interactivity: The learners are going to need paper and pen/ pencil. This will be part of a repeated branching activity. Why? Research show that retention is better with paper and pencil (Eck, 2013). Also this
will be use in my formative assessment. The first few slides will have no electronic interactivity.

Title: Website Benefits
Main Body Text: Benefits of Having a classroom website
1.Keep yourself and students organized
2. Distribute resources and conduct a flipped Classroom
3. Keep absent students in the loop
4. Provide a window into your classroom for parents and community

Benefits of using technology in the classroom

Proposed image or graphic for this slide

*Purpose of Slide: Motivation.

* Asterisk means not on screen but relevant to presentation.
Narration: So you want to have a website, why? ( answers may vary) Here are some reasons why all teachers need a website. Please the read the first slide for yourself. All of these reasons and more. The
benefits of technology in the classroom are endless. Also it is the 21st century, in order to be an effective teacher you need to have some technical skills. Many teachers are set in their ways. If you want to
continue teaching, and keep yourself current, then having a website is a great place to start.
.

Interactivity: Part of any branching activity is having a discussion as to the purpose of this training. According to Keller, this is the relevance of the project as define by present worth and future usefulness (
sited in Larson 2014, p.175). It is important that learner know this is relevant and useful to their teaching. Starting with questions, and having discussions will be a repeated activity in this training to get the
learners interactive.

Narration: This is the first step. I have broken up each step into smaller sub steps if needed. As an overview there are about ten steps to create a Google Site. This does not include designing and managing your
page layout. That would be many more steps. However, first we need to log in. Can anyone tell me, what web browser the district uses? (answers- will vary- but hopefully Google Chrome comes up) . Yes , we
have Google Chrome as our web browser which means it interfaces nicely with other Google products like Google Sites. Furthermore the District has created an account using our school email. This is nice
because it is one less step to complete when using Google sites. Okay learners, get to your log in page, type your password and press enter Class, do not forget to write on your paper step 1 Log on and the sub
steps 1.1 and 1.2. Okay class lets get ready for step 2.
.

Interactivity: Class discussion of web browser will be part of interaction. Student will navigate to Google Log in page, they will input password and Log on. This will be electronic interaction. The teacher will
circulate around the classroom and help students with any issues -2-3 minutes. The teacher will wait about 2-3 minutes until everyone has done this process. Also, I will have students on their paper write step
1 Log On with sub steps 1.1-1.2.

Assignments are graded as completed full point value or not.

Narration: Ok class lets review what we did today, during this training the goal was to learn the steps to create a website using Google Sites. This was broken down into learning outcomes. Each learning
outcome had one slide or more with various learning objectives under it. There were 3 formative assessments given. The class wrote the steps on paper and he had went through the steps. As part of the
formative assessment , we tried to identify and sequence the steps that had been taught. This was discussed, reviewed and put on the board. Students self corrected results on paper and then typed the correct
steps into an electronic document. This was a process was rehearsal in order to enhance learning.
The final Assessment will consist of 4 products. Three you have already created. This will be graded as a point each. The final assessment will be to create a new another website independently
without help. This you can label as Test 1. Please get started. When you have finished, I can check you work .

Describe the question type / interactivity:

Teacher monitor- Teacher will observe that all learners have hand written notes, typed document, and have created the first website.
Final assessment- Learners will duplicate the process. This will be done independently as a test no help can be given but they can use their notes. Students will be given about 10 min to create and apply the
steps they have learned to show they have mastered their Learning outcomes. Successful completion is (2Pts).
