Homework/Make-up Work
Homework
The Governing Board believes that homework supports student learning.
To be effective, homework assignments should not burden students and
families. Assignments should reinforce daily learning objectives
based on individual student needs. Further, the Board believes that
homework is an effective tool for developing self-directed learning
and time management in elementary age students.
(cf. 6011 - Academic Standards)
For children in grades K-2, homework, when assigned, is most
effective when it does not exceed 20 minutes each school day. For
children in grades 3-6, homework, when assigned, should not exceed
30-60 minutes daily. Teachers shall assign homework based on academic
standards and social skills taught during the school day.
The Board recognizes that parents and guardians have an important
role as a contributing resource for homework support. When assigning
homework which involves parents and guardians or other caregivers,
teachers should include specific instructions that show how support
should be given.
(cf. 5020 - Parent Rights and Responsibilities)
(cf. 6020 - Parent Involvement)
Homework focus areas should include:
Make-up Work
Students shall be given the opportunity to make up school work missed
because of an excused absence or suspension and shall receive full
credit if the work is turned in according to a reasonable make-up
schedule.
(cf. 5113 - Absences and Excuses)
Teachers may require a suspended student to complete any assignments and
tests missed during suspension.
(Education Code 48913)
Students who miss school work because of unexcused absences shall be
given the opportunity to make up missed work. Teachers shall assign
such make-up work as necessary to ensure academic progress not as a
punitive measure.
