Title:TheBorderlinebetweenClassicalandQuantumMechanics"
Abstract: According to John Bell's famous theorem, classical systems cannot reproduce certain quantum phenomena such as
superpositions and entanglement. Therefore quantum models and classical models are usually considered to be entirely
different, with a gap in between. Yet there are numerous examples where a simple direct mapping exists that maps the
solutionsofSchroedingerequationsontothesolutionsofclassicalequations.Themostconspicuousexampleofamodelwith

Speaker:Prof.dr.StefanVandoren
Title:BlackHolesandStringTheory
Abstract: Black holes are one of the most fascinating objects in the universe. Theoretical physicists are challenged to the
extreme to describe the strange properties of black holes, such as the microscopic explanation of its entropy using quantum
mechanics.Weexplaintheroleandthepromiseofstringtheorytoprovideaquantumgravitationaldescriptionofblackholes.

Title:Magneticskyrmionsandemergentelectrodynamics
Abstract:Skyrmionsaretopologicallyprotectedfieldconfigurationsthatwereoriginallyproposedasamodelforbaryonsand

formofalatticeofmagneticskyrmions.InthistalkIwilldescribehowsuchaskyrmionlatticeinteractswithelectriccurrent.It
turns out that a static skyrmion lattice gives rise to the socalled topological Hall effect via an emergent magnetic field that
arises from the coupling between electron spin and magnetization. Similarly, a moving skyrmion lattice induces an emergent
electric field. These finding contribute to our understanding of coupling between magnetization and electric current, that, in
additiontobeingfundamentallyinteresting,isalsoimportantforbuildingnovelmagneticmemories.

Title:Colloidalselfassemblyinliquids
Abstract: Since the days of Einstein it has been known that colloidal particles (with sizes in the nanometer to micrometer
regime)performBrownianmotioninroomtemperatureliquids.Thisrandomwalktypemotionrenderscolloidalsuspensionsa
