Comparative Analysis on the Processing and Costing

of Feeds Producers in Cebu

Rationale
Feed is one of the most critical inputs to the swine and poultry industries in the
Philippines. It represents roughly 60% of the total cost to produce pork, poultry meat,
and eggs. Because of the critical role of feeds to these industries, feed production or
feed milling has evolved into a multi-billion-peso support industry to animal and feed
production.
The most chronic problem the industry faces is the frequent shortage of cheap raw
materials, which has perennially undermined production and caused a wide gap
between the available supply and demand for feeds.
In order to be able to farm sustainably, a competitive advantage in the form of lowercost and higher-quality produce feeds must be established.
The decreasing supply of feed sources and growing demand for livestock products in
the Philippines will increase the need to make more feeds as well as more effective use
of feed sources.
Cost accounting is a process that aims to capture a companys costs of production by
assessing the input costs of each step of production, as well as fixed costs. It compares
input results to output or actual results to aid company management in measuring
financial performance.
Since cost accounting analyses the cost of each unit, it gives an idea about the cost of
production. This awareness helps to decide adequate selling price and it helps in
decision making during period of depression, competition, etc.
There are many methods of costing such as job costing, contract costing, batch costing,
and a lot more. There are also different techniques of costing such as uniform costing,
marginal costing, and others. And of course, there are different kinds of costs that a
company may incur such as variable costs, fixed costs, and the likes.
Companies may arrive on different ways of minimizing cost and maximizing resources,
depending on the costing methods and techniques they use. To sum it all up, cost
accounting can be considered as the most concerning problem with an organization
especially those manufacturers in the feed industry, because different costing methods
will lead to different profit to a firm.

Statement of the Problem

The main problem of this study is to find out if there is , in fact, a significant
difference between processes and costing of the feeds producers in Cebu.
Specifically, it attempts to:
1. Give an overview of the procedures used by feeds producers in Cebu in the
procurement of their raw materials used in production.
2. Describe the basic costing methods used by feeds producers in Cebu in
processing feeds with these raw materials.
3. Describe the kinds of costs incurred by feeds producers in Cebu in processing
feeds with different types of raw materials
4. Site differences, if any, in the costing methods used, kinds of costs incurred, and
processing procedures by feeds producers in Cebu in processing feeds with
these different types of raw materials.
Hypothesis
Based on the foregoing research problems, the researcher formulated the following null
hypothesis:
1. There are no differences in the costing methods used, kinds of costs incurred,
and processing procedures by feeds producers in Cebu in processing feeds with
organic wastes as part of their ingredients.

Significance of the Study

The research study could provide information on the processes being applied by
feeds producers, the costing system they use, and the kinds of costs they incur in
producing feeds. This study would be beneficial to the residents of Cebu City as this
study aims to provide information on ways to manage organic waste instead of just
throwing them away.
This study would also be helpful to the environment as it shows how feeds
producers reduce organic wastes by using such as part of their ingredients in producing
feeds. This would expectedly heighten the awareness of both the consumers and
producers of feeds.

To the future researchers, this study can serve as a basis for information on the
recent trends on processing procedures used, costing methods applied, and kinds of
costs incurred of producing feeds with organic waste as part of the ingredients.
