nighttime,wherewecanobservethemoonslightonly,notrealizingorobservingthatsuchlightisonlythereflectionofthetruelight
ofSun.
Itisforthatreasonthatthesouliscleansedfromitssins,andGodteachesustobreaktheshellofbandana,sothatAtmacanbecomathe
pureAtman.

imbibeorbettertosayrejectsaconsiderablequantityoflight,indicatesthatnaturalbenefikasAtmakarakdoesnoteasily

Therearecertiainruleswhichshowwhetherwillpersongoeitherway

1.NobilityandbirthinaroyalfamilyresultiftheAtmakarakaisintheNavamsaLagnaor1sthouse.Highattainments
andpositionlikenedtothoseofakingresultifthelordoftheNavamsaLagnaconjoinstheAKevenifthenativeis
borninhumbleconditions.If,ontheotherhand,theAKaspectstheNavamsaLagna,thenthenativeenjoysroyalty
frombirth.ThestrengthofRajayogasalsodependsonthestrength,positionandassociationsoftheSun,whoisthe
karakaofthefirsthouse.
2.IftheAtmakarakaisin2ndhouse(lagnainthe12thfromAK),thenthenativeisarenunciateandpossiblyevena
saint(ifothercriteriaadditionallyapplyinthehoroscope).Saturnisthekarakaofthe12thhouse,andthusindicates
thepathofeitherasannyasi(aformalrenunciate)orsomeonewhogivescharityforhumanitarianpurposes.If
Venusisstrong,andespeciallyifKetuandSaturnjoinormutuallyaspectVenus,thenthenativeperformstapasyaor

dictatesofdharmaveryseriously.Theresultsofmuchpunyabringopportunitiestoperformsadhana(spiritual
practice),tomeetandlearnfromadvancedspiritualistsandtoservethecauseofpromotingTruthintheworld.
6.IftheAtmakarakaisin6thhouse(lagnainthe8thfromAK),thenthenativeconfrontsmanychallengeswhich
resultfromstigmatickarmasfrompastlives.ThenativewithsuchaplacementoftheAKisrecommendedto
propitiateSaturn.Moreimportantly,theyshouldperformtheSatyaNarayanaVrataregularlyorasoftenaspossible.
RecitationoftheMahamantraisultimatelybeneficialforanyoneincurrentera,kaliyuga.
7.ThepositionoftheAtmakarakain7thhouse(lagnain7thfromAK)ishighlyauspiciousandblessesthenative
withagoodspouseandtheenjoymentsofmanybeneficialassociations.Thenativeispureinheart,wellintentioned
andcompassionatetoall.
8.IftheAtmakarakaisinthe8thhouse(lagnainthe6thfromAK),thentheresultsaresimilartothoseforthe6th
house.Thenativemayconfrontvexingproblemswhicharehardtosolve.Physicalailments,challenginglongevity,in
additiontoemotionalanddomesticdiscontinuitymaybeproblematicforsuchnatives.RecitationoftheMahamantra
andtheVishnusahasranamastotram,aswellasperformanceoftheSatyaNarayanaVrataisultimatelybeneficial.

resultsofbhagya(fortune)tothenative.ApowerfulSunbringsrajayogaandenablesthenativetobevery
influentialineducationalandspiritualcircles.IfJupiterispowerful,thenthenativebecomesaguruinhisownright,
afterreceivingtheblessingsofselfrealizedsoulsorthoseadvancedinhigherknowledge.Materiallyspeaking,such
anativehasnoconcernsinthisworld.
10.IftheAtmakarakaisin10thhouse(lagnainthe4thfromAK),thenhappinessthroughfamily,homeandmother
arewellearned.Blessingsthroughassetsandpropertyaccrue,aswellasrespectandlovethroughclosealliesand
associates.Thedegreetowhichsuchresultsmanifestdependsonthestrength,placementandassociationofthe
MoonintheNavamsachart.
11.CourageandcapabilityistheexecutionofanytaskresultwhentheAtmakarakaisinthe11thhouseofthechart
(lagnainthe3rdfromAK).Thenativeisintelligentandpossessesfirmnessofmindandunwaveringdeterminationin
theperformanceofduties.Hehastheabilitytosolvetheproblemsquicklyandtoactdecisivelyincrisissituations.If
Marsisstrong,thenthenativereceivestheresultsofrajayogaakintothatofRuchakaMahaPurusayoga.The
nativeisrespectedoradmiredbyothersduetovalorandfearlessnessinanyconfrontationalsituation.
12.IftheAtmakarakaisinthe12thhouse(lagnainthe2ndfromAK),thenthenativeeasilyattainswealthasthe
resultoftheblessingsofLakshmidevi,theconsortofVishnu.IfsimultaneouslyMercury,JupiterandVenusarein
strength,thenthenativemayachieveknowledgeduetotheblessingsofthegoddessSarasvati.Ifthelordofthe2nd
housejoinsthatofthe5thand/or9th,thenthenativeenjoystheresultsofDhanayoga(wealth).

IshtaDevata
AccordingtoVedictradition:Ego(Rishi)arisesfromthemind.Theegodesiresthatwhichitperceivesislacking(notknown).Thisinitiatestheprocessof
knowing(Devata)whicharisesintheintellect.Theknown(Chandas)istheninventoriedinthemindasmemory,andit'sfromthesestoredmemoriesthatthe

desiresoftheegoriseagainandagain.

Rishi,DevataandChandas:Rishi(Iam,ego)istheknowerandisruledbySun.Devata(intellect)istheprocessofknowingandisruledbyMercury.Chandas
(mind)istheknownandisruledbyMoon.

Rishiistheknoweroregoofthejiva.Eachoneofussensesthisknoweraspectofourselves.ItisthataspectthatweidentifyasourSelf.Rishiisaviewpointof
theuniversethatisuniquelypersonal,likeawindowthroughwhichanindividualperceivestheworld.

Devataistheintellectorfacultyofdiscriminationwhichconnectstheknowerwiththeknown,andcompletesthecircuitthatgivesrisetoknowledge.

Chandas:Intheselfreferralprocessofknowing,rishibecomesdevataanddevatabecomeschandasandchandasisthenewknowledge,whichisthenew
rishi.Thenewrishiisdifferentfromtheoriginalrishibecauseoftheassimilationoftheknowledge.

IneachhoroscopethereisaplanetknownasaAtma(divinesoultrappedintothe8typesofbondage)andKaraka(movable
significator)whichhastodowiththefunctioningofthe8chakraincludingtheroleofSomanath.Suchgraha(planet)istermed
ATMAKARAKA.Atmakarakaisthemostimportantplanetinachart.ItistheKingofthechart,andhappyKingshowshappykingdom
andviceversa.Lagnaisintelligence,whileChandrashowsthemind.TheyareofsecondaryimportanceincomparisontoAtmakaraka.
Atmakarakatherefore,showsthekarmawhichcausedourbirth.Thisgrahabroughtusintothisplane,andforcedAtmatotakeacertain
mindandbody.
Itbroughtustothisplanettoteachuscertainlessons.ThisgrahashowsthelightningandstormsofIndraDevata

Therearefourmaingoalsofhumanexistance:dharma,artha,kamaandmoksha.Inordertoachievethem,peopleareadvised
toworshipvariousdevatas.Amongallthedevatasonecanworship,theIshtaDevataistheforemost.

Theterm'IshtaDevata'literallymeans'themaindeity'.ThisDeitycanblessonewithgoodpassagethroughlife.
Whatismore,IshtaDevataisresponsibleforgrantingmokshatothenative.Hence,itsworshipnotonlyensuresthat
one'swholelifeistakencareof,butalsomakesitcertainthatoneismovingtowardsliberation.
AmongallthedifferentdevatasitisVishnu,whoiscapableofbestowingmoksha.Healonecarriesthesudarshana
chakraandusesitspecificallyforthatpurpose.IfoneishitbythisastraofLordVishnuheachievesfinal
emancipationassudarshanachakrahasthepowertoseparateone'satma
fromthemana.ForthesereasonstheworshipofanappropriateVishnuAvataraasone'sIshtaDevataisgenerally
recommended.
However,ithastobeborneinmindthatone'sIshtaDevatamaynotnecessarilybeVishnu.Theachievementof
perfectionisalsopossibleforthosewhoareworshippingotherDeities,likeShivaorDurgaDevi.Still,insuch
situations,mokshaisgrantedbytheviamediumofSriVishnuandHissudarshanachakra,asitisVishnualone,who
takesonthetaskofgivingmoksha.
TheenmitybetweenSriRamaandRavanadepictedintheRamayanaclearlyillustratesthispoint.Itisawellknown
factthatRavanawasagreatdevoteeofLordShiva.HewasblessedbytheLordandnoweaponusedbySri
Ramachandracouldkillhim.Thiswasso,becauseLordShivawantedtograntHisdevoteemukti.Ravanadiedonly
whenLordRamathrewHischakraandinthiswaygrantedhimliberation.

ThereforebothstatementsmadeinShastrasareright:thatonlyVishnuisthegiverofmokshaandthattheother
Devatas(likeLordShivaorDevi)arealsocapableofblessingtheirdevoteeswithmukti.
Everyhumanbeingtakesbirthduetotheirkarmafromthepreviousbirths.Afterdeath,thebody,mindandthesoulseparate,
andbodygetsmergedintothepanchatatvawhilemindandthesoulfollowthepathoftheayanas,towardtheplanesdeserved
byaccomplishedkarma.Sothecyclegoeson,anditwillneverstopunlessoneisgivenamoksha.Manypeoplehavewrong
conceptofmoksha,mistakingthetermforspirituality,whichcanbedefinedinsomanyways.Iamnotgoingtodiscuss
moksharighthere,butwilljustaddthatitisoftenconceivedasfinalemancipationofthesoul.Therearedifferenttypesof
moksha,anddifferentpathstoit.Injyotishathereareafewplanetswhichplayanimportantrole,amongwhichAtmakaraka
(theplanetinthehighestdegree,excludingrahuwhosecountingisdoneinreverse)andIshtaDevataarethemostimportant.

Atmakarakacarriesthesinsofthepastbirthandisakintoainnerlightwhichpreventstheouterlightduetoitspapa
orsin.AtmakarakaislikeaSunwhoseraysaresodazzlingthatwefailtoseethelightwhichisbehind,thelightof
God.IshtaDevatarepresentstheGodinhisnumerousforms.Therefore,duetotheinteractionandexperienceof
theworld(throughmanaandindriya),atmafallsinto8typesofbondageorbandana.Inthisphase,Atmanis
capturedwiththeSinandbecomesAtma.Therefore,positionofAtmakarakainthechartindicatesaplacewherewe
willsufferduetoAshtaBandana,andwherewebeleivethatourLightisStrongerthanthelightofGod.Therefore,it
isalmostimpossibletostatethatanypositioninthechartofatmakarakaisgoodformoksha,duetoitsbandana,
becausethatistheplacewhereweBEHAVElikeaGod.Soifatmakarakaisin10thhouse,apersonbehaveslikea
Godinthatareaandthussuffers.PositionofAtmakarakisthereforedependentonanyfactor,buteventheconcept
thatitspositionintrinesautomaticallygivesspiritualityisnotcorrect.Thespiritualitygivenismoreonthelevelof
dharma(notmoksha)andnormally,ifAkisin5thhouseapersonmaymisuestheauthority,whilein9thhousea
personwillbehavelikeaGodorGuru.Suchpositionsareoftenreflectionsoftheirownahamkar(ego),unless
Ishtadevataandotherfactorsintervenes.Ifbhavesha,Karaka,andIshtaDevataisnotfavourable,apersonsuffering
willoftenturnintoahatredtowardstheworldandanarchy.SObecarefull,thinktwiceanddeeplyincaseof
analyzingAtmakarakainfluence.PeopleareoftenmisguidedbypositionofAKinnavamsalagnathinkingitwill
automaticallygivethemspirituality.ThenwhywouldParasharaandJaiministatethatin2ndhouseitwilllead
towardsmoksha?IfyouwishtounderstandAtmakaraka,pleasemeditateonyourIshtaDevatawithopenheartand
dedication.
Sincethesoulcomesandleaveswithdharma,Navamsachartbecomescrucialinunderstandingspirituality.12th
houseindicatestheexitfromthisworld,so12thhousefromAtmakarakawillshowthemaskGodiswearinginthe
formofIshtaDevata.IshtaDevatacanonlycomefromVishnuRupawhichisconfirmedbyVishnuGayatriinRig
Veda.VishnuisSarvaVyapakeshvaraDevataandthusheispresenteverywhereineveryform,yetnever
representedbyanyform.Normally,Grahain12thfromAtmakarakanavamsaknownasKarakamsawillindicate
IshtaDevata.Iftherearenoplanetstakethelord.ThisformofVishnuwilltakeandlureyoursoultowardsfinal
emancipation.ThereareotheropinionsondecidingIshtaDevatawhichIwillleavefornowon.
Now,themaintaskistoanalyzethisrupaofGod,andthisgrahainthechart.Thereisadifferencewhetherthis
planetismalefic,beneficmaleorfemaleetc.ClassicaljyotishtextknownasChandraKalaNadicallsthisplace
Jivanmuktamsa,ortheplacewhereJivaattainsliberation.Sincetherearefourtypesofmokshaamongwhichoneis
Jivanmukti,thishasaspecificmeaninginahigherspiritualteachings.IshtadevataplanetwillbehaveasaGod
handalsoinamoremundanelevels,wherewecanseeitsfavourableorunfavourableinfleunceincertainareasof
life.So,whetherapersonwillgotowardsmokshaornotisjudgedfromthisplanet.Thereforeitisveryimportantto
understandpositionofIshtaDevatainall12housesofthechart.

TheFormofIshtaDevataanditsworship
LordVishnuappearsinthisworldthroughdifferentgrahasandthosegrahasindicatetheappropriateAvatarathatshouldbe
worshippedasone'sIshtaDevata.ThelistofthosevariousincarnationsandplanetsassociatedwiththemisgivenintheBrihat
ParasharaHoraShastra,chapter2,verses57:
''FromSuryatheavataraofRama,fromChandrathatofKrishna,fromMangalthatofNarasimha,fromBuddhathatofLord
Buddha,fromGuruthatofVamana,fromShukrathatofParashurama,fromShanithatofKurma,fromRahuthatofVarahaand
fromKetuthatofMeenaoccurred.Allotherincarnations(thanthese)arealsothroughthegrahas(...)''
AsfarastheworshipofotherDevatasisconcerned,thelistofthoseDeitiesandtheircorrespondingplanetswasgivenby
ParasharaMuniinhisBrihatParasharaHoraShastrainthechapteronKarakamsa.ItwasalsopresentedbyJaiminiMaharishi
inhisUpadeshaSutras(1.2.7279):SuryaindicatesLordShiva,ChandraindicatesGouri,ShukraindicatesLakshmi,Mangal
indicatesSkanda,BuddhaandShanibothindicateLordVishnu,GuruindicatesSambaShiva,RahuindicatesTamasiorDurga
andKetuindicatesLordGanesha.
Everyoneiseligiblefortheworshipofone'sIshtaDevataandeveryoneatleastshouldknowtheirIshtaDevata.Theprocessof
worshipissimpleandisbasedonthechantingofthedvadaksharimantrafortheappropriateDeity.Althoughthischanting
aloneisverypowerful,anidealsituationiswhenonealsoperformspancaupacharapujatoone'sIshtaDevata.
Theterm'dvadaksharimantra'means'thetwelvesyllablemantra'.AnexamplarydvadaksharimantraforLordVishnuasIshta
DevataisgivenbytheParasharaMuniinhisVishnuPurana.Theugramadhusudanamantragiventherebythesageisas
follows:
OmNamoBhagavateVasudevaya.
ParasharaMuniadvisespeopletochantitandsaysthatwiththismantraweaskLordVishnutopickupHissudarshanachakra
andliberateus.Themantrabhogaofthisparticularmantraismukti.Thereforeitshouldbedoneforone'sIshtaDevatawiththe
purposeofmakingprogresstowardsfinalemancipation.

TheAvatarasofLordVishnu
EachVishnuAvatarisworshippedwithadifferentdvadaksharimantra.HereinIhavepresentedeachoftheseincarnationswith
ashortdescriptionandthesuggestedmantra.Oneshouldknowthatthereareoftenmorethanonedvadaksharimantrafora
particularVishnuAvatar.Assomeofthemarenotinlinewiththetraditionandparamparaitisadvisedtorefertoauthorities
whilechoosinganappropriateone.

LordRamahasappearedinthedynastyofMaharajaKhatvangaasthesonofMaharajaDasharatha.HebroketheHaradhanu,
marriedSitadevianddefeatedRavana.LaterontheLordbecamethekingofAyodhya.Hisgloriesandpastimesaredepictedin

savehimandkillHiranyakashipu.ThemantrathatshouldbechantedforNarasimhaIshtaDevatais:

LordBuddhaappearedinthisworldbecausepeoplewereperformingsinfuldeedsonthestrengthofVedicauthority.Thatiswhy
HehasrejectedtheVedasandpreachedbuddhistphilosophy,teachingpeoplethebasicdharmicprinciples.However,because
HehasrejectedtheVedasHeisnotaccpetedasaworshipableincarnation.Thatiswhy,sincetheBuddhagrahaalsosignifies
Vishnu,itisrecommendedtoworshipLordVishnudirectly,insteadofLordBuddha.ThemantrathatshouldbechantedforLord

LordVamanaappearedinthisworldasthesonofKashyapaMuniandAditi.Hetooktheformofabrahmacharidwarf.Lord

MaharajaagreedandSriVamanadevatooktheentireuniversewithhistwosteps.HemadethethirdstepbyputtingHisfooton
BaliMaharaja'shead.ThemantrathatshouldbechantedforSriVamanadevaIshtaDevatais:

Tofindone'sIshtaDevatawehavetolookattheAtmaKarakainNavamsa,sincetheNavamsashowsblessingsofGodonto
thenativeandthewayinwhichthenativecommunicateswithGod.Navamsaisalsoknownasthedharmaamsa,sinceitis
the9thdivision(ninthhousesignifiesdharma).ThereforeweshouldlookforIshtaDevatainthisVarga.

incarnateasRama,Krishna,etc..Aftercompletingthemission,theParamatmamsas(oftherespective)Grahasagainmerge
(intherespective)Grahas.TheJeevatmaportionsfromtheGrahastakebirthsashumanbeingsandlivetheirlivesaccording
totheirKarmasandagainmergeintheGrahas.AndatthetimeofGreatDestruction,theGrahasaswellmergeintheLord
Vishnu.Onewhoknowsofallthese,willbecomeversedintheknowledgeofthepast,present,andfuture.Withoutaknowledge
ofastrologythesecannotbeknown.HenceeveryoneshouldhaveaknowledgeofAstrologyparticularlytheBrahmin.Onewho,
devoidofastrologicalknowledge,blamesthissciencewillgotothehellcalled'Raurava',andwillberebornblind.
IfSukra(Venus)joinstheAtmakarakaintheNavamsa,thepersonwillbecomeagreatofficialorpoliticalpersonage,willbe
fondofmanywomenandwillretainvitalityandsexualpassionstillheishundredyearsold.
IfSani(Saturn)joinsAtmakarakaintheNavamsa,hewillproduceafamouspersoninhisownlineofbusiness.
IfRahujoinstheAtmakarakainNavamsathepersonwilllivebytheskilfuluseofwarlikeinstruments,hewillearnbreadas
thiefanddacoithebecomesadoctordealinginpoisons,manufacturerofgold,silver,copperandothermetallicmachinery.
WhenKetujoinstheAtmakarakaintheNavamsathepersonsbornundersuchcombinationtradeinelephantsorbecome
thievesandrobbers.
IfRavi(Sun)andRahujoinAtmakarakaintheNavamsathepersondiesbysnakebites.
IfbeneficsaspecttheYogamentionedabove,therewillbenodeathsfromsnakebites.

enlargedtesticles.
IfKetujoinstheAtmakarakaNavamsathepersonwillhavehisearscutofforwillhaveseriousearcomplaints
IfAtmakarakaandKetuintheNavamsa,havetheaspectofSukra(venus),thepersonwillbecomeaDeekshitaorperformerof
Yagnyasorreligioussacrifices.
IftheAtmakarakswithKetuintheNavamsahastheaspectsofBudha(mercury)andSani(saturn),thebindofanimpotentor
eunuchshouldbepredicted.

IftheKarakamsaRasi(sign)withKetuhastheaspectofSukra(Venus)andBudha(mercury),thepersonwilltalkrepeatingand
repeatingthesameideasorwillbethesonofaprostituteordancingwoman.
IftheKarakamsawithKetuhastheaspectofSani(saturn),hewillbecomeaTapaswiorrecluseorbeadependentandservant
undersomebody.
IfintheabovecombinationthereisonlytheaspectofSani(saturn)andthereisnootherplanetaryaspect,hewillputonthe
appearanceofasanyasibutwillnotbeatrueorrealsanyasi.Hewillbeanimpostor.
IfRavi(sun)andSukraaspect(venus)theKarakamsathepersonwillbeemployedbyroyalorpoliticalpersonagestodotheir

willlivethroughfireandbeanalchemist.ShouldstrongBudh(mercury)beKarakamsa,hewillbeskilfulinartsand
trading,beintelligentandeducated.Guru(jupiter)inKarakamsadenotesone,doinggoodacts,endowedwith
spiritualismandVediclearning.Onewillbeendowedwithlongevityof100years,besensuousandwilllookafter
stateaffairs,ifShukra(venus)isinKarakamsa.Shani(saturn)inKarakamsawillgivesuchlivelihood,asduetothe

association,thenativewillbeendowedwithwealthandlearning.Thecombinationofbeneficandmaleficwillinthiscontext
yieldmixedresults.IttheUpakheta(orupagraha,videsloka5ch.32)isinitsexaltationsign,orown/friendlysign,andis
devoidofmaleficaspect,thenativewillgotoheavensafterdeath.
Ifthe2ndfromKarakamsafallsinthedivisionsofVenus/Mars,onewillbeaddictedtoothers'wivesandifVenusormars

ShouldMercurybeinthesaidhouse,thenativewillbeanasceticofthehighestorderoroneholdingstaff.TheSunandMars
inthesaidhouserespectivelydenoteoneusingaknifeandspear.Saturndenotesabowmaninthiscontext.RahuandKetuin
thesaidhouserespectivelydenoteamachinistandawatchmaker.Venusinthesaidhousewillmakeoneapoetandan
eloquentspeaker.
Ifthe10thfromKarakamsabeaspectedorconjoinedbyabenefic,thenativewillhavefirmriches,besagacious,strong,and
intelligent.Amaleficsorelatedwillcauseharmtohisprofessionanddeprivehimofpaternalbliss.MercuryandVenusso
relatedwillconfermanygainsinbusiness(orprofession)andwillmakehimdomanygreatdeeds.Theluminariessorelatedto
the10thfromKarakamsaandifbeinaspecttoorconjunctionwithJupiterthenativewillacquireakingdom.
Ifthe11thfromKarakamsabeaspectedbyorconjunctabenefic,thenativewillenjoyhappinessfromcobornapartfrom
gainingineveryundertakingofhis.Ifamaleficisinthesaid11th,thenativewillgainbyquestionablemeans,befamous,and
valorous.

Ifthe12thfromKarakamsahasabenefic,theexpenseswillbeongoodaccountwhileamaleficwillcausebadexpenses.If
thesaid12thbevacantthenalsogoodeffects(inrespectofexpenses)willfollow.Iftherebeabeneficplanetinexaltationorin
ownhouseinthe12thfromKarakamsaorifKetuissoplacedandaspectedbyorconjunctabeneficonewillattainheavens
afterdeath.OnewillattainfinalemancipationifKetuisinthe12th(fromKarakamsa)identicalwithAries/Sagittariusandis

thesameforpublicgood.
IftheMoonisintheKarakamsainaspecttoVenus,thenativewillbeanalchemistandifbeinaspecttoMercuryhewillbea
doctorcapableofcuringalldiseases.
