To minimize the presently observed over flowing above the top of gate, it is checked the
possibility to extend the gate vertical height by 600mm. This analysis is done for check
the holding capacity of newly added water volume by only extending existing vertical siffners
gate structure.
Figure-1 Basic dimensions for the calculation
Load Calculations
Horizontal component of the water load on the newly added 600mm gate portion,
Wh = BH(H-h/2)
Wh = 10.59kN
Vertical component of the water load on the newly added 600mm gate portion,
Wv = -3.67kN
Then the resultant force acting on the newly added gate portion is,
1/5
W = 11.207 kN.
For the analysis it is assumed that the total load acting on the gate portion as 22.414kN
and this gate portion is restrained by the weldings along the mating faces of the skin plate
and the mating faces of vertical stiffners.

With the newly added 600mm portion, total water load which is acting on the gate has
increased. That loads are calculated as follows.
Wh new = 396.61 kN
Wv new = 121.71kN
Then the new resultant force which is acting on the gate is 414.86kN along the 17.05
degrees to the horizontal axis.

Then, according to the newly acted loads on the gate checked the stability and the
strength of the gate arms.
Upper and Lower arms were checked as follows.
Each upper and lower arms loads are, Rup = 119.62 kN,
R low = 92.4 kN

Conclusion
Addition of 600mm vertical height to the existing gate structure is recommended.
