Measurement of ESDD

With reference to the discussions in Test Procedure, the pollution severity is defined in the
form of Equivalent Salt Deposit Density (ESDD) in mg/cm 2. To measure the ESDD for
ceramic insulators the standard procedure is defined in the IEC-60507[24]. In the present
work, the measurement of ESDD for porcelain disc insulators is carried out as per IEC60507[24] and is explained in steps as below.
1. The cleaning bowl is washed thoroughly for any contaminations present in it.
2. The tap water of known volume v with a conductivity approximately 90S/cm is
taken in to cleaning bowl for cleaning the test insulator.
3. The test insulator is placed in the cleaning bowl and its surfaces are washed cleanly
ensuring that not even minute deposits are left on the surface.
4. After thorough washing of the surfaces, insulator is taken out from the bowl.
5. The washed solution is taken in to a new cleaned container and the solution is stirred
continuously until all deposits get dissolved in to the solution.
6. Now, the temperature and conductivity of the solution is measured using thermometer
and conductivity meter and are noted.
For a reference temperature of 20o, the conductivity correction is carried out as below
20= [ 1b ( 20 ) ]

(3.17)

where is temperature of solution mentioned in oC

is the solution volume conductivity, when solution temperature is C (S/m)

20 is the solution volume conductivity, when solution temperature is 20 oC (S/m)
b is the factor based on temperature and is found to be approximately equal to 0.0192
The salinity Sa (kg/m3) of the solution is determined using below mentioned expression, when
20 is between 0.004-0.4 S/m,
S a=( 5.7 20 )1.03

(kg/m3)

(3.18)

Now, Equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD) is determined using the following expression
ESDD=

( Sa ) v
S

(mg/cm2)

(3.19)

where v is the volume of the solution (cm3) and S is cleaned surface area of the insulator in
cm2
