PROBLEM SET 03: FOURIER REPRESENTATION OF SIGNALS AND SYSTEMS

EEE 35: Signals and Systems

Deadline: April 21, 2016, 12:00 NN

INSTRUCTIONS:
Use SHEETS OF BOND PAPER for your answer sheet. Do not forget to write your
COMPLETE NAME, STUDENT NUMBER, and DC SECTION on EACH PAGE.
Read the HONOR CODE and copy it on the first page of your answer sheet. Place your
signature and printed name after the code to signify that you understand and agree with its
contents.
Write your COMPLETE SOLUTIONS and ANSWERS. Be sure to BOX YOUR FINAL
ANSWERS for exercises that require computation. The checker reserves the right to
disregard solutions that are incomprehensible and/or illegible.
Work independently. You are only allowed to consult with the instructor. Cheating will not be
tolerated. Good luck!

HONOR CODE
I do hereby affirm, on my honor as a student at the end of this exercise, that I had no unlawful
knowledge of the questions or answers prior to this exercise and that I have neither given nor
received assistance in answering any of the questions during this exercise.

TASK 01 (25 POINTS): Consider the rectified sinusoidal signal shown below. The signal was
fed to an RC circuit, also shown below, and we need to determine the steady-state output
voltage across the resistor R2.

Figure 1.1. Rectified sinusoidal input signal

Figure 1.2. The RC circuit for Task 01; Vin is the signal shown in Figure 1.1
A. (5 POINTS) Determine the frequency-domain representation of the rectified sinusoidal
input signal. Express it as Ck. (Note that k is an integer.)
B. (5 POINTS) Plot the magnitude and phase spectra of the rectified sinusoidal input signal.
That is, plot the |Ck| (magnitude) and Ck (phase) functions. Use A = 1, T = 1/60, and k =
0 to 5.
C. (10 POINTS) Determine the response of the RC circuit to the generic complex exponential
excitation below in terms of the variables R1, R2 and C1. Note that it is a linear and timeinvariant system.

Ak ej!k t
Suppose R1 = 100, R2 = 10k, and C1 = 100F. What kind of filter is the RC circuit and
what are the passband edge frequencies? NOTE: The passband edge frequencies are
locations where the gain is 0.707 of the maximum possible gain that the circuit can
provide.
D. (5 POINTS) Determine the steady-state output voltage across the resistor R2 based from
your answer in C. Express your answer as a sum of sinusoids whose frequencies are
within the passband of the RC circuit. Use A = 1 and T = 1/60.

TASK 02 (10 POINTS): Consider the continuous-time system below.

x(t)

h1(t)

h2(t)

y(t)

Each block is a causal and stable LTI system, and the impulse response of each block is
shown below.

h1 (t) = e t u(t
h2 (t) = e

2t

2)

cos(2t)u(t)

A. (5 POINTS) Determine the expressions for the frequency response of each block.
B. (5 POINTS) Suppose the system is fed with the input below. Writes an integral expression
for the energy of the output signal. Use the frequency response equations in A. HINT: Use
Parsevals theorem.

x(t) = e t u(t)
TASK 03 (15 POINTS): Consider the two sequences below.

x1 [n] = { 2, 1, 0, 1, 2}
1
X
x2 [n] =
x1 [n 5k]
k= 1

The underlined sample is the value of x1[n] at n = 0. The sequence x2[n] is the periodic
version of x1[n].
(3 POINTS EACH) Determine the following:
A. The frequency-domain representation of the autocorrelation of x1[n], that is, x1[m]x1[-m].
B. The frequency-domain representation of 2x2[n - 4].
C. The frequency-domain representation of x1[n + 1] + x1[-n - 1].
D. The value X2 [k = 0].

E. The value

X1 (ej! ) d!
