Course Description:
This course covers the fundamentals of Spanish: conversation, basic writing,
listening, vocabulary building, grammar and culture. These are the skills required by
the California standards. Students at this level are expected to try to communicate
regularly in Spanish with the teacher and classmates.

Goals:

The main objective of the course if to help you develop skills in the areas of
listening, speaking, reading and writing in the Spanish language at a basic to
functional level.

The ability to understand and communicate will develop along with the
knowledge of the vocabulary and grammatical structures of the language.

Evaluation:
1. CLASSWORK: The daily work assigned in class will be due at the end of class
every
day, unless otherwise specified by the teacher. All class work must be turned
in on time on the day it was assigned in order to receive full credit. No class
work will be accepted without name, title or date. Late class work will not
receive any credit
2.

HOMEWORK: The homework will be checked every day at the beginning of


class. No late homework will be accepted! I will do my best to post

homework online at the end of every day. However, I didnt see the
homework online so I didnt do it is not a valid excuse for incomplete
homework. Homework will always be announced in class.

3. TESTS AND QUIZZES: Tests will be given at the end of each chapter. The
quizzes may or may not be announced. However, the tests will always be
announced one week prior.
4. PROJECTS AND PRESENTATIONS: You are expected to come to class ready to
participate orally and daily. Oral presentations include class discussion,
answering questions and dialogs to be represented in front of the class. The
various projects will be assigned throughout the semester and have to be
done in pen or preferably typed. Any projects or videos not in accordance
with the school policies will not be accepted.

Criteria for evaluation:

90-100 A

80-89 B
70-79 C
60-69 D
59 and Below=F
Breakdown: Tests 40% Quizzes 20% Homework 10% Projects 20% Other classwork
10%

MATERIALS:
You must come prepare to class with all the suggested materials. If not, your
citizenship grade will be affected. The following are required materials: 2 pocket
folder, pen, pencil, notebook filler paper, colored pencils. We often look at maps of
South America and Central America. Markers, crayons, colored pencils are useful for
labeling.

EXCUSED ABSENCES:
Due to the emphasis on oral practice, attendance and participation is extremely
important and will be reflected on your grade. It will be your responsibility to make
up any missing work due to excused absences. You have the same number of days
you were absent to make up missed work. It is your responsibility to find out the
work missed and arrange with the teacher a convenient time to meet. Once again,
I am available before, during, and after school for help. If you cannot make
these times, I can make other arrangements with you.

TARDIES AND UNEXCUSED ABSENCES:


You must be on time in class every day. On time means in your seat when the bell
rings, which marks the beginning of class. No late class work or homework will be
accepted due to unexcused absences. Please see the New West handbook for more
details.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR:

1. The number one rule in this classroom is RESPECT. I expect you to be


respectful to your classmates, to learning and to the teacher.
2. You must be in your assigned seat quietly and ready to learn as soon as the
bell rings. You must pay attention and participate in all classroom activities.
NO work from any other classes will be permitted during this class. You can
get out of your seat only when appropriate and necessary but never when the
teacher is lecturing.
No eating, make up, cell phone or any type of electrical device is allowed in
class and will be confiscated. Cell phone will be given to Dr. Weir/Mr. Herrera.
Cell phones are to be off and out of sight at all times.
