STAR Academy Process

The main thing to understand is if behavior is disruptive it doesnt really matter why at
the time, what is happening is what matters. When a student cannot stop disrupting they go to
the STAR Academy where they can reflect on their behavior. At the STAR Academy they make
a plan for improved behavior. When their plan is complete they return to speak with the
teacher, one on one, and agree to a return to class. One thing to keep in mind, STAR Academy
does not condemn mistakes it allows kids to learn from them.

Procedures:
When a student is disrupting ask them the STAR Questions:
1. What are you doing?
2. What are you supposed to be doing?
3. What are you going to do now?
The student is now expected to stop the disruption. If he/she disrupts again quietly complete a
STAR Pass and give it to the child. It is important not to engage the student in conversation or
preach about the choice that has been made.
If a student initially refuses to answer the questions, they have chosen to go to the STAR
Academy. They will make a plan and meet with you to negotiate a return to class.
