Syllabus

FELICITACIONES!
Congratulations for beginning the study of a world language. Your study of Spanish can
fulfill college entrance requirements, advance employment marketability, and enhance
your knowledge of the world and the people around you. Worldwide, over 400 million
people speak Spanish daily and it is the heritage language of more than 35 million
people in the United States. Spanish will be a source of enrichment all of your life and
you dont even have to leave the country to experience and enjoy it.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Spanish III sets the foundation for learning Spanish. In this course, we will work on
reading, listening, writing, and conversational skills. We will put a lot of emphasis on
communicating in the language. Please be prepared and willing to hear and speak
Spanish in class.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Students will communicate in Spanish.
Ask and answer questions, with an emphasis on biographical information
Understand spoken and written language that has a strong visual support
Write narratives about their personal lives
2. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of Spanish culture.
3. Students will explore the significant contributions of Hispanic people and cultures.
4. Students will identify countries and geographical features of the Spanish-speaking
world.
5. Students will communicate on a personal level with speakers of the language.

2. Semester Grade Calculation


Quarters 1 & 2 Course Work = 80%
Semester Exam/Project = 20%
3. Over the course of each quarter, students will receive grades that fall into the
categories listed below.

Performance Assessments

= 80%

Tests, Projects, Assignments, Participation Points

= 20%

4. An unexcused absence will result in a failure to earn credit on the work assigned or
handed in during that time period.
5. Students are expected to check their Spanish grade on a weekly basis. Students
are expected to come to me with any questions or concerns they have about
missing work or their grades within 1 week of the date the score is published in
PowerSchool.
6. Makeup work is the students responsibility.

Students have two days from the day they return to class to turn in any
excused absent work. This deadline includes tests and projects.

It is the students responsibility to find out if they need to


complete any work after an absence by looking at the class
website and checking in with the teacher.

Students are to place their makeup work in the la tarea bin on the
table by the door. (Do not ever give the work directly to me or place it
on my desk.)

Students will be expected to take a quiz or test on the day it is due


unless they have been absent for the 2 days prior to the due date.

Students may turn in 1 late homework assignment per quarter. The


assignment(s) must be turned in within 2 days of the due date.

BINDER
You may want to use a three-ring binder or folder to organize your course
materials. It will document the written work you complete during class. You
can divide your notebook into the following 4 sections and label each in
Spanish:

El vocabulario
Los apuntes
En clase
La tarea

(vocabulary lists, handouts, and flashcards)


(class notes)
(daily class work and quizzes)
(homework assignments, practice tests, etc.)

ATTENDANCE AND TARDY POLICY


Please see the school-wide tardy and attendance policy in the student handbook.
If you arrive late to class with a pass, you may complete any work you miss. If you do
not have a pass, you will not be allowed to earn credit on the work you missed.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
1. Behavioral Norms

Follow teacher requests immediately.


Treat each other politely and kindly.
Treat school and personal property respectfully.
Be prepared. Make a good effort on the work and ask for help if you
need it.

2. Classroom Procedures
Beginning Class
A. Students will enter the class quietly and sit in their assigned seats.
B. Students will immediately begin to complete the warm-up when the bell
rings.
C. Students will come prepared to class with the following materials: Spanish
binder, paper, sharpened pencils, class notes, and homework
assignments.
D. Students may not return to their locker after the bell has rung. They
should not bring cards, make-up, food, magazines, photos, electronic
devices or other materials not related to the course.

Instructional Activities
A. Students are to remain quiet during announcements, video clips,
classroom lectures and other appropriate circumstances.
B. Students are to remain seated with their group members during group
work and are not to distract others if they finish early.
C. During whole-group activities students must raise their hand and wait to
be called upon before speaking.
D. Most classroom activities involve verbal communication amongst the
students. It is important that students use quiet voices during class time.
E. Students are expected to ask for help if they need assistance.
Ending Class
A. Each student will pick up the area around his/her desk, make sure it is
lined up with the other desks and push in his/her chair.
B. Class supplies will be returned to their proper place in an orderly manner.
C. Students should make sure they understand the directions for homework
and other assignments before they leave class.
Other Procedures
A. Students should respect the rights and property of others and accept
responsibility for their own actions. They should not talk out of turn or
interrupt others. Their language should fit their surroundings. They are
also expected to pick up after themselves.
B. Students should go to the bathroom, sharpen pencils and throw trash
away before class begins.
C. Bathroom Passes
Students should not ask to go to the bathroom during the first or last
10 minutes of class.
Students have 3 passes they may use each semester.
Students must use the World Language hall bathrooms only.
Students will receive an unexcused absence if they do not return from
the bathroom in a timely manner, or go someplace other than the
bathroom.
Students who abuse their pass privilege will lose it.
D. Students are always welcome to come and see me after school if they
would like clarification on an assignment or extra help.

CLASSROOM PARTICIATION POINTS


You will start each class period with 3-5 participation points.

(You begin with 100% of your

points.)

You keep your points by participating fully in class activities.


If at any point you are not on task, you will lose participation points.
How do I participate in class?
1. Be seated in assigned seat when the bell rings.
2. Be prepared for learning.
Bring Spanish binder, paper, and pencil to class every day.
Do not bring cell phone or other materials to class that cause
distractions to
yourself or others.
Do not distract other students from the classroom activities.
3. Be prepared and able to turn in your homework assignment as soon as the bell
rings.
4. Immediately begin the warm-up activity written on the dry erase board when the
bell rings.
5. Invest 100% of your attention in the classroom activities.
6. Be respectful to other class members. No foul language.
7. Headphones and other electronic devices are not to be used or visible during class.
8. Raise your hand and wait to be called upon before speaking during whole group
activities.
9. Use bathroom and go to locker before class begins. Do not ask to go to locker or
bathroom.
