TEACHING COMPETENCIES
As a classroom teacher I am competent in the following areas:

Facilitating Student Learning


Always present learning opportunities in a number of different formats e.g. written, diagrammatic,
demonstration, verbal to cater for diverse learning styles.
Have written specialised courses to cater for Intensive Language students and for ESL students in bot
Home Economics and Art subjects.
Altered teaching programs to cater for the needs of hearing impaired, visually impaired and
physically disabled students.
Constantly monitor and make adjustments in the daily running of classes with regard to individual learn
needs or background influences to allow all students to achieve the best possible educational outcome
Apply small group teaching strategies to facilitate optimum student learning e.g. placemat, jigsaw,
cooperative group practical work.
Allow students to choose aspects of their learning program when relevant e.g. Decide on which
garment they will make in textiles class within guidelines, Give suggestions for dishes they
would like to prepare in foods classes.
Use experts from the community to facilitate learning e.g. Excursion to Samson Park with year 11 Tour
students and activities by an aboriginal educator introducing them to an understanding of Aboriginal
culture.

Assessing and Reporting Student Learning Outcomes


Constantly and consistently apply various strategies to record student progress and achievement. This
includes formative methods checklists, anecdotal, journals- and summative methods Design Briefs
which are written to allow for a wide variety of understandings and responses
Create assessment rubrics for individual assessment items with the aim of assessing
- 4 -students
and according to the guidelines. These are constantly modified if necessary.
Engaging in Professional Learning
Constantly monitor teaching programmes for effectiveness and improvements. This includes those
developed by myself and those of colleagues.
Make changes for future classes. Modify programs and lessons to cater for particular needs or
changes which occur to a class e.g. Demonstrate the process of making a creaming method cake
to a class with limited experience in the theory and practise of cake making and oven
management.
Monitor and record effectiveness of each lesson and modify appropriately for repeat or future
lessons according to class needs.

Take part in as much Professional Learning as I am able to especially with regard to


Curriculum Framework and Courses of Study. This includes required whole school PD,
relevant PD provided by the Home Economics Association and networking as well as personal
research to assist in curriculum development and improvement.

Participating in Curriculum Policy and Other Program Initiatives in an Outcomes-focused Environment


Meet with other members of Technology and Enterprise staff to plan and implement curriculum policy.
Team leaders give guidance which I use to put details in place e.g. assessment guidelines for
year 10s, reporting accurately and effectively.
Constantly apply knowledge gained from professional development to improve and manage and evalu
curriculum and program initiatives.
Modify Course outlines and teaching and assessment processes to reflect current policies and initiativ

Forming Partnerships within the School Community


Staff representative on North Lake Senior Campus School Council 2012-2015

Parent representative on School Council and member of the P and C Executive of Winterfold Primary
School that is in the Fremantle Education District.
Volunteer time to help with school arts productions including sewing costumes, working backstage,
serving in the canteen and washing of costumes.

Maintain information and anecdotal records with regard to each student and any needs
or concerns relating to their classroom performance.
Contact parents or caregivers with any issues relating to an individual student This often
helps to simplify and resolve problems especially those related to communication difficulties.
Discuss difficulties or misunderstandings with individual students in order to solve them and develop a
better relationship with them.
Attempt to learn about each students interests and life for the same reasons.
Work as a team member within the school and always try to be cooperative and sensitive
to other colleagues and their needs. I ask for feedback from colleagues to ensure that I am
working harmoniously within the team
Discuss modifications and innovations with other team members before implementation.
Act on requests made by my line manager as soon as possible
