1. Am I in the right room? I will greet each student at the door and will check their schedules as they enter into the classroom. There will be welcoming signs displayed around the room on bulletin boards, chalkboard/whiteboard, door, etc. my name, class subject, and room number will be readily visible.
2. Where am I supposed to sit?
As each student enters the room they will be given a playing card and they will search for the desk with the matching card. This technique will be used periodically to change up the dynamics of the classroom and so that everyone has the opportunity to be neighbors.
3. What are the rules in the classroom?
Classroom rules/expectations will be established on the first day of school. Each student will receive a contract which they will need to sign and take home for a parent/guardian to sign. Students will be required to return their signed forms as their first daily grade. Extra copies of the contract will be available as needed. The rules/expectations will be clearly posted on the wall, as well as, on my website. We will discuss and model the rules and expectations for student understanding.
4. What will I be doing this year?
For the first two weeks all class procedures will be explained and modeled; students will have the opportunity to seek clarification during this time so that all questions and concerns are addressed. Students will learn procedures for turning in homework, what to do if the teacher needs the class attention, how to enter the room essentially, they will learn how to be responsible for their behavior and their learning.
5. How will I get graded?
Each student will be graded based on their mastery of the content. The emphasis will be put on completing all assignments and tests. Students will be aware of the general grading policies via the rules/expectations contract given on the first day of school. Rubrics will be used for projects and essay work.
6. Who is the teacher as a person?
I will create a small bulletin board that will include information about my life hobbies, interests, work, family, etc.
7. Will the teacher treat me as a human being?
I will great students at the door each day as they arrive to class with a smile and positive attitude. I will have a quote of the week displayed on the board that promotes learning, positive character traits, or good choices. Students will learn that my classroom is a safe-place where everyone is accepted and treated with respect, kindness, and fairness. I will also make myself available so that my students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help.
