Introduction
An osmosis is the diffusion of water from high concentration of water to low
concentration of water in a permeable membrane. The purpose of osmosis is
for water to keep the survival of the water balance to prevent too much water
coming in and too much water coming out. So there is an experiment that is
about finding out how the cells react to the different types of water. The
experiment was held on the 23rd of August 2016. The purpose of this
experiment is to find out what happens to two different potatoes with one put in
saltwater and one with freshwater in it. Of course before every experiment there
is a hypothesis or prediction on what will happen and the result of the
experiment. The hypothesis for the experiment is that the potato in the saltwater
will shrink because of the high amount of salt in the saltwater and the potato in
the freshwater will become equal and not become anything. So that is the
hypothesis that is used in this experiment to be answered at the end of the
experiment.

Procedure
First prepare the following materials: 2 Beaker, Graduated Cylinder, 600ml
water, 2 teaspoon of salt. After all the materials have been prepared, the
experiment could be done by these following steps:
1. First fill up the the beaker with water 300 ml each. Do not put the potato first or
the result will be different
2. Put two teaspoons of salt to one beaker and stir the salt until fully dissolves.
Still, do not put the potato in the beakers
3. Put the potatoes in both beakers and set timer to exactly 60 minutes

4. After 60 minutes have gone through, pull the potato out of the water
5. Measure the amount of water afterwards using a graduated cylinder and
compare between the two beakers
6. Measure also the potato weight after the experiment have been done
7. analyse the results and make conclusion including answering the hypothesis.

Data Table
Type of Water

Saltwater

Freshwater

Potato Weight (Before)

Water Amount (Before)

Potato Weight (After)

2.5 Grams

2.0 Grams

Water Amount (After)

The table above is the data that is acquired from the experiment. The data
table shows that both potatoes lose weight after the experiment. Also the
amount of water before and after on both of the beakers were reduced after the
experiment.

Result
The result that is obtained from the experiment is a lot and can be analysed to
answer the hypothesis is it right or not. So from the data that is obtained, we
can conclude that the potato in the saltwater even though lose less then the
potato in the freshwater, it can clearly be seen from the table that the water
amount after the experiment actually increase and that is because a lot of water
inside the potato went out and creating more amount of water in the beaker.
Meanwhile the potato in the freshwater maybe lose weight more than the potato

in the saltwater, but it is equal and doesn't gain or lose too much water. So from
the hypothesis that has been created early before the process of the
experiment, it is somewhat right and somewhat wrong because the predictions
in the beginning is that the one with saltwater will decrease water by significant
and will look more clearly the loss of water.
In conclusion, this experiment really shows how osmosis works and how it
works inside of a cell membrane which in this case was represented by a potato
and the saltwater.
