BEACH VOLLEYBALL COURT A MARKET ACCEPTABILITY STUDY IN

MOLINO 1, BACOOR, CAVITE

INTRODUCTION
Beach volleyballusually played, as its name implies, on a sand court with two players
per teamwas introduced in California in 1930. The first official beach volleyball tournament
was held in 1948 at Will Rogers State Beach, in Santa Monica, California, and the first FIVBsanctioned world championship was held in 1986 at Rio de Janeiro. Beach volleyball was added
to the roster of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.1
Beach volleyball is a variation of indoor volleyball. It is played on a sand field by two
teams with two players each, and its objective is to ground the ball on the opponents half of the
field, over the net (Horta-Linnikko, 2012). Played outdoors on a sand surface with only two
members per team, the goal of beach volleyball is to make the ball it the ground on the
opponents side of the court, or prevent its return to ones own side of the court. Beach Volleyball
is a team sport involving control of a ball through redound and movement (Kulka and Dunn,
2000). The sport is reported to be played since the beginning of the last century, and has become
more and more popular with time. When it comes to incentives and practicing, there are striking
differences between indoor and beach volleyball. The indoor players have the chance to practice
all over the year, despite the weather conditions, and the players have the support of a local team,
which provides the sport hall, instructors, equipment, and even financial support or a salary for
its players.
The beach volley players, on the other hand, dont have any team support for their
practicing, as they dont represent a team, but a couple. In other words, there is no organization
to support their training with equipment, instructors, nor financial aid. In addition, having access

to outdoor beach volley fields only during the short summertime wont allow the players to
achieve good results in any tournament. (Horta-Linnikko, 2012)
What were the challenges beach volleyball had to overcome to finally stand alongside
other sports? Firstly, volleyball had not been built up as a mainstream commercial sport yet.
Secondly, conservative schools and families were not too comfortable with their daughters (and
some, with their sons) being in public in what is essentially skimpy swimwear. Third, it had to
start in the big cities, and when these big colleges went recruiting in the provinces, parents were
reluctant to let their daughters be shepherded to places they feared would be corruptive
influences. That trend started to reverse in the 1990s. And as volleyball became a more
appealing way to earn scholarships (thanks to professional television coverage by ABS-CBN and
other networks), parents saw it as a way for their children to get a free education. And beach
volleyball, by extension, soon started getting more attention. Requiring less players, its also
easier to stage. Thats also the reason why traditional tour organizers like Subic Park Hotel have
taken the plunge and begun supporting beach volleyball. (Velasco, 2016)
Whether you play indoors, on the grass, or on a beach, volleyball can be a great way to
stay healthy and fit. Its also a great way to stay involved in social activities, as it can be played
with a single partner or with and entire team.2
According to Samir Becic, a four-time number 1 fitness trainer, and Health Fitness
Revolution, by Samir Becic Foundation, in an article posted om April 10, 2015, the sport
provides numerous benefits. It classified the top 10 health benefits of volleyball including: the
burning of calories and fat; increases metabolic rate; tones and shapes the body; improves handeye condition; builds agility, coordination, speed and balance; is heart healthy; builds muscular
strength; increases aerobic ability; improves interpersonal skills; and boosts mood and increases
drive to succeed.
Besides being health beneficial, beach/sand volleyball has many advantages. More and
more indoor players are improving their game by learning how to play on the beach. The big

advantage of playing beach volleyball is the fact that it forces you to develop all your skills. This
is why it's usually a good idea to play volleyball in the sand.3
