1. Describe steps to locate the Glucose Testing, (Abbott PXP) Ancillary Bedside Policy Procedure on
MHS Intranet/ PolicyTech and complete the written knowledge assessment in HealthStream.
1. Demonstrates Quality Control (QC):

Performs 2 levels of quality control

Scans control and test strip barcodes

States and/or demonstrates troubleshooting actions for out-of-range quality control results

States proper comment codes for out-of-range quality control results


2. Performs patient testing:

Wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

Demonstrates proper sample collection

Enters operator ID into the meter (scan badge or manually enter operator ID)

Performs patient identification: scans patient ID bracelet, verifies patient name and date of birth.
Actively confirms patient identification by entering the patients date of birth into the meter.

Prepares patient for sampling:

Scans test strip


+ inserts test strip into glucometer
+ properly cleans the fingerstick site
+ performs finger or heel stick according to policy
+ wipes first drop of blood and samples second drop of blood
+ states action to take for higher/lower than expected patient results
+ enter correct comment code after running patient tests
3. Verbalizes MHS policy for critical results.
4. Downloads data into system via applicable system (Docking station or cable)
5. Demonstrates recall of patient results from the Data Review Section
6. Locates troubleshooting information for system error messages.
7. Identifies acceptable battery type used
8. Demonstrates proper cleaning maintenance.

Population Related Considerations


1.

Infant/Toddler: Performs lateral heel stick to obtain blood sample. Allows time for the patient to calm
down. Provides comfort measures, such as pacifier.

2.

Geriatric: Describes precautions specific to integumentary changes commonly present in the geriatric
patient, including decreased soft tissue due to aging and bruising or skin tears due to fragile skin and
dehydration.
