INTRODUCTION

Marino College first opened its doors to students in 1936. In the


early eighties Marino College pioneered and developed a range
of Further Education courses designed to meet the needs of
students who have just completed the Leaving Certificate and
also people of all ages who wish to return to education.

a successful entry into the work place or to make progress to
higher qualifications in University. It is our mission to support
each student to advance to satisfying and financially rewarding
employment or to a related area of further studies. We are

All Further Education courses at Marino College are conducted
on our Connolly House Campus in North Strand Road, Dublin 1.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Centre Location
Marino College of Further Education is located at the Five Lamps,
North Strand Road, Dublin 1. This centre is known as Connolly
House and is just a few minutes walk from Connolly Railway
Station, Busaras and OConnell Street See How To Get To
Connolly House on Page 23.

Application Procedures
Application for all courses should be made directly to Marino
College, Connolly House, 171 North Strand Road, Dublin 1 or
apply online at www.marinocollege.ie, or complete the application
form on page 27 and return to college.

Interviews
All eligible applicants will be interviewed. You may need to bring
a portfolio to some interviews. Please check the prospectus and
web-site for additional details.

In addition, students are liable for a 200 participation


contribution, imposed on all PLC courses. The following
categories of student are exempt from paying the contribution.
Full current medical card holders in their own right and their
dependent children.
Those who are eligible under the student grant Scheme
Those in receipt of the Back to Education Allowance or
VTOS allowances.
Please note evidence that you are in receipt of any of the above
must be provided before an exemption can be implemented.
Therefore, initially only those who produce a full medical card
in their own right will be exempt. All others must pay the 200
contribution and it will be refunded when their eligibility is
confirmed.

Policy Statement
Marino College is committed to equality of opportunity in all its

Garda Vetting
Course Costs
Registration fees apply. However it is important that students
should budget to cover the cost of the various student services
- similar to the requirements of Third Level colleges. These costs
include examination fees, insurance, registration charges, books,
and where required - uniforms and specialised equipment. Details
of these charges are available on request from the college. There
are no fees for tuition. No refund of course costs will be issued
after 30th September.

Students applying for courses involving working with children


and or vulnerable adults, are required to undergo Garda Vetting
procedures prior to commencing placements. If, as a result of the
outcome of the Garda Vetting procedures, a student is deemed
unsuitable to attend clinical or other professional placement, he/
she may be required to withdraw from the course.

Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) Maintenance


Grants
Students attending full-time approved courses at Marino College are eligible to
apply for a maintenance grant. The Grant is based solely on income and where
students wish to proceed with an application it is necessary to apply to ones local
Education and Training Board.

Back to Education Allowance


The Back to Education Allowance is a scheme which enables anyone in receipt
of benefits eg Jobseekers Allowance or One Parent Family Payment to enrol on
a Post Leaving Certificate or Adult Education course and continue to keep their
benefit. For more information on the schemes you can contact your local Social
Welfare Office.

Back to Education Initiative


The Back to Education Initiative provides part-time Further Education Programmes
for young people and adults. The aim is to give people an opportunity to combine
return to learning with family and other responsibilities. Priority is given to early
school leavers, participants can retain their benefits and there are no course
charges.

Career Guidance & Counselling


All students may avail of a Career Guidance and Counselling Service. This service
assists students to make decisions regarding their future career options or further
study. A Counselling service is available to students on an individual basis to
address issues of personal concern.

Student Activities
Students enjoy participation in various College activities such
as the planning and operation of the Five Lamps Arts Festival,
preparing and assisting with Photographic and Artwork
exhibitions.

Social activities are generally co-ordinated by course tutors and


are an integral part of college life. Students from each course
group elect a student representative to participate on the Student
Representative Council (SRC). This Council meets on a regular
basis throughout the year to discuss matters of interest to the
students. The SRC is also responsible for organising various
social and fundraising activities within the College. A member of
the Council is nominated to represent the students on the City of
Dublin VEC Sub-Committee for Marino College.

Progression
The Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS) facilitates
progression to a variety of higher education courses via specific
FETAC Level 5 and 6 Certificates. Under this scheme a number
of places are reserved by higher education institutions for FETAC
applicants for entry to a range of 3rd level courses, see CAO.ie
and Fetac.ie for further information.

INTRODUCTION TO
NURSING STUDIES
Aims
This is a preparatory course for students who intend to go on to
further training for the four year degree in Nurse Training both
in Ireland and UK. The course introduces students to subjects/
topics commonly studied for the nursing profession.

Entrance Requirements
Leaving Certificate standard, including Leaving Cert Applied.
Science subject desirable. Grade C in ordinary level Maths
ismandatoryfor entry to UK Nursing Degree programmes. All
eligible applicants will be interviewed. Academic requirements
may be waived for mature applicants.

Future Prospects
Currently there are approximately 72 places offered to students
who successfully meet the FETAC criteria for nurse training in
Irish Universities. This criteria applies to all colleges who run
the FETAC Level 5 Introduction to Nursing Studies Course. To
maximise career opportunities for our students, Marino College
has also developed strong relationships and links with the

undertake their Nurse Training in Ireland and the UK. Many
Students progress to full nursing qualifications, whilst other find
employment in the broader health care setting. Students who

DENTAL NURSING

Aims
This accredited course in Dental nursing is designed to
prepare students for a career as a dental nurse and encourage
participants to gain a recognised professional qualification.
During the course you will be able to experience the role of the
Dental Nurse in a variety of dental settings.

Leaving Certificate standard. NB Applicants must note that


having Leaving Cert Biology is desirable.
All eligible applicants will be interviewed. Mature applicants
welcome. Students that present for interview must have good
spoken and written English or agree to undergo Literacy
Assessment.
Please note that Marino College is an equal opportunities

Both the practical skills and the theory of course will follow
the National Diploma Examination Syllabus. There will be
no classes during June, July and August this time is allowed
for students to gain further clinical experience and meet exam
entry requirements. Between September and January of the
following academic year, you will be expected to attend College
one evening per week for examination preparation classes (this
will incur a separate fee) NEBDN written examinations are held
on completion of year one in November and January.

Work Placement
Students will undertake continuous clinical placement two
days per week working in a Dental Practice over the duration
of the course. This arrangement ensures that students will
acquire the necessary clinical experience in dealing with the
demands of the surgery. All students will be Garda vetted and
will require Hepatitis B vaccination for work placement. As the
vaccination process takes approximately four months, students
should bear this in mind when preparing for work placement
starting in early October.

Occupational First Aid Certificate as recognised by the Health


and Safety Authority.

There are excellent opportunities for students to follow after


qualifying as a dental nurse such as careers as Dental Nurses
in General Dental Practices, Community Dental Clinics and
Dental Nursing in Dental Hospitals for those who complete the
National Diploma.

Assessment of theory and practice is continuous throughout the


course. However, final qualifications are dependent on success
in the NEBDN Irish Diploma in Dental Nursing (NEBDN). This
Course consists of lectures, tutorials, practical classes and
demonstrations, simulations with use of Phantom Head Dental
Manikin and problem based learning.
A Record of Experience from NEBDN (UK) must be completed
and signed off by a registered Dentist from your work experience
over the 1 year for entry to the final NEBDN Examinations.
Your dentist must agree to undertake an online witness training
programme with NEBDN. On qualifying, students are eligible
to apply for registration with the General Dental Council (GDC)
UK and the Irish Dental Council (IDC)

It is also a useful bridge to careers in Oral Health Education,


Special Needs Dental Nursing and Dental Hygiene. Successful
students are also encouraged to extend their qualifications
through participation in a variety of post qualification certificate

Aims
This two-year course is designed to prepare students to work
competently, safely and effectively with young children. It is ideal
both for school-leavers and mature people seeking a formal
qualification. Having successfully completed year one, students
can, depending on performance at level 5, progress to the

Year One Practical training is provided which is closely
integrated with all aspects of the course.

Year One Students who successfully complete this course


may, depending on results, progress to the Level 6 second year.
Where students wish to progress to employment, there are
opportunities that include working in Practical Employment in PreSchool Centres, Day Nurseries, Creches, Child Care Residential
Centres, Hospitals and as Nannies. There are links with related
courses in Institutes of Technology in Ireland and the Degree
course in Early Childhood Studies DIT, DCU, NUIM and others.

Work Placement

This course provides students with the skills and knowledge

Aims
This one year course is intended as a follow on for those who
have completed FETAC Level 5 in Business Studies or
a related area. It aims to provide advanced training in a number
of computer applications, to develop the learners business and
management skills and an understanding of his/her role in the
modern business world. The course builds upon and enhances
the skills gained at Level 5, taking this to a new level of expertise,
increasing the learners confidence and professional practice and
in turn broadening employment prospects and career promotion
possibilities.
With the IT and business management skill sets from this course,

and Public Relations, the learner will develop and experience
real life projects, affording a well rounded education and training.

Aims

Work Placement

The aim of this course is to help students produce an excellent


photographic portfolio. Students are encouraged to explore in
detail various photographic themes through project-based work.
As part of the assessment students produce an exhibition of their
work at the end of the year.

One day per week throughout the year will be spent in suitable
place of employment. In order to complete this work, students will
be required to undertake a number of field trips.

As well as the core photographic theory, camera control, lighting,


darkroom and digital darkroom techniques, students are taken
on a visual journey of contemporary and historic photographic
practice to aid the development of their own photographic style.

Work Placement

This course is designed for those who wish to pursue careers in


the areas of journalism, photo-journalism and photography. This
course aims to give practical experience in editing, layout of print
production and publishing through the collaborative production
of the college magazine which will be produced at the end of the
second term. They will learn to integrate a range of journalistic
skills including the ability to publish for different media platforms
including websites, blogsites, social media and print.

One day per week for 10 weeks will be spent in suitable place
of employment. Students will undertake photographic
assignments relevant to newspaper, magazines and other
publications. Students produce the college newsletter.

Having secured experience and skills in journalism and


photography, students may wish to use this as a foundation

Aims

Work Placement

The aim of this course is to help students to produce a highly


creative and informed portfolio of graphic design work. Students
will explore the practical and theoretical study of graphic design
across a broad range of media, through project based work.

Work experience will be organised by students throughout the


course year where they will have the opportunity to work in the
field of art and design.

The course is aimed at providing a stepping stone for students


who wish to progress to third level education in the area of art
and design or who wish to directly pursue a career in the area of
graphic design.

Entrance Requirements
Leaving Certificate standard including Leaving Certificate
Applied. All applicants will be interviewed.Itis also
recommended, but not entirely necessary to have studied art at
leaving cert level.Students should demonstrate, at interview, an
ability in visual arts via a basic portfolio of work relating to art and
design, particularly drawing skills.

Graduates of this course have gone on to study degree courses
in Visual Communications, Fine Art and other related courses
in institutions such as DIT Mountjoy Square, NCAD and IADT
Dun Laoghaire. Graduates are also eligibleto join Year 2
of the Graphic Design Higher National Diploma in Colaiste
Dhulaigh College of Further Education and progress to a degree
qualification validated by the University of Wolverhampton. Entry
requirements: Interview and Portfolio of Course Work.
This course is also suitable for students who wish to directly
pursue a career in the area of graphic design.

Aims

Work Placement

This course is designed to give you a foundation in a broad range


of theatre practices to help develop your skills and confidence in
performance techniques. A childrens play at Christmas written by
writer-in-residence Niamh Gleeson (Dear Frankie) and a classical
play in spring at the Sean OCasey Theatre form a major part
of the course to enable learning in a friendly and professional
atmosphere. A range of dance techniques are offered and
students will devise group and solo work. Over the course
of the year students avail of workshops with leading theatre
practitioners including a master class with course patron director
and writer Mr. Peter Sheridan. By the end of the course, students
will have a collection of work in preparation for interviews and
auditions and we will offer guidance on further studies in theatre
and drama. Having secured experience and skills on the course,
students may use this as a foundation for entry into further
studies including acting and drama degrees.

Throughout the year students are involved in every aspect of


their college productions. Students can also avail of industry
related work experience in event management during the
annual Five Lamps Arts Festival, a yearly event which includes
opera, traditional music, walking, classical music, visual art and

Future Prospects
Past students have gone on to study in Trinity College, UCD,
DCU, NUI Maynooth, NUIC, DIT, Tralee Institute, Belfast Institure
of HE, Winchester University, Edgehill University Liverpool, New
York University and ARTSTRAIN with NAYD in Dublin. In some
cases students have gone into professional theatre work directly
from Marino College. Recent graduates have appeared with
Druid Theatre Company, Fair City (RTE), Sweet Media Production
Company, Maylin Theatre Co, and the Irish Film Festival LA. All
students who successfully complete this course are guaranteed
a place in Swansea Metropolitan University with exceptional
students getting into the second year of their Honours Degree
Programme. Successful students have the opportunity of
auditioning for the Five Lamps Theatre Company, associated with
Marino College.

The Five Lamps Theatre Company


The Five Lamps Theatre Company is a professional theatre
company formed by course director Roisin Lonergan and
writer Niamh Gleeson (Marino College writer-in-residence
since 2002). To date the company have producedThe
Telephone Exchange(National tour 2007-2009),The
Mariettas2009,andDear FrankieActors audition for the
company and then workshop ideas with Niamh Gleeson for a
short period prior to the writing of each play. The company was
inspired by the number of exceptional students that the Marino
Theatre Performance course has yielded, though any actor is
welcome to audition for roles.

The Beauty course in Marino is ideal for students who wish to


pursue a career within the Beauty Industry. We offer students
an ideal opportunity to train to the highest standard for the
ITEC Beauty Specialist Diploma, Facial Electrical Treatments
and Diploma in Holistic Massage, and toward a Full FETAC
Level 6 award in Beauty in Year 2. Marinos Beauty course
houses both theoretical and practical work. Our Beauty course
provides students with a thorough understanding of anatomy and

which must be met to register for both theory and practical
exams. It is compulsory that students complete a portfolio of case
studies as part of their internal assessment which is verified by

Work Placement
Work experience is an essential part of the course whereby
students will spend time during the year in a suitable place of
employment. It is the responsibility of the individual student to
secure a placement in the industry for 1 day each week between
September and December.

successfully complete this course as ITEC qualifications are

opportunities include working in Beauty Salons, Cruise Liners,
Self Employment, Cosmetic Counters, Hotels, Leisure Complexes
and Spas. Students who successfully obtain their diplomas from
Marino College can progress to further studies in Beauty and
