EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This document specifies the standards and requirements for Shell and Tube Exchangers (API
660) for FPSO topsides.

2.0

BACKGROUND
Company facilities must meet minimum Industry standards to ensure that Quality, Health,
Safety, Environmental, and Operations goals are attained. Standard specifications are used to
communicate the minimum standards within the Company as well as to Suppliers and
Contractors.

3.0

BASIS
Industry codes, standards, and practices, as well as Company experience and preferences are
the basis for this document. The following references apply only as specified in the body of
this document. If the reference is not mentioned within, it is not applicable. Latest reference
editions, including addendums, in force at contract award apply. Reference requirement
conflicts shall be brought to Company attention for resolution. The most stringent
requirement of the following references applies unless otherwise specified in writing by the
Company.

REFERENCES
Technical requirements for shell and tube heat exchangers are based on the latest edition of
API Std. 660. Requirements within this specification are in addition to those of API Std. 660.
These supplementary requirements are identified as additions, deletions, replacements, and
decisions. Paragraph numbers in this specification are the same as API Std. 660.Any
unrevised API Std. 660 requirement shall remain applicable.

The following definitions apply within the body of this document:

Facility

Supplier or Subcontractor shop and/or any property owned by a Supplier or Subcontractor where any
portion of the work will be performed.

requirements or the contract to procure, design, manufacture, and deliver the work.

Standards

Industry Codes, Standards, Guides, and Recommended Practices referenced herein, meaning the latest
issue or edition in force at the end of the Supplier bid validity date or the contract date.

Supplier

At quote stage: any entity invited to provide a quotation for the equipment and/or any Subcontractors
thereto.
At Purchase stage: any entity contracted for the supply of the equipment and/or any Subcontractors
thereto.
In all cases, the Supplier is responsible for performance of all Work and will be the single point of contact
for all Work related issues. The Company will not receive information from nor respond directly to
Subsuppliers.

SECTION 7, API 660 DESIGN


Section 7.2, API 660 - Cladding for Corrosion Allowance

The thickness of the corrosion allowance, cladding, or overlay shall not be used in strength
calculations.

Section 7.3, API 660 - Shell Supports

Stacking of three or more exchangers shall require the Companys approval.

Stress on interconnecting nozzles resulting from the thermal growth rates of stacked
exchangers shall be included as superimposed loads in designing the nozzles.

All external attachments, including the complete supports and saddle plates, shall be sealed
against corrosion via continuous welding. Two inch NPT vent holes shall be provided for
each external pad. Each hole shall be plugged with heavy grease after testing.

Section 7.6, API 660 - Tube Bundle

Tube sheet design, construction, and tube-to-tube sheet joint shall be in accordance with
TEMA standards and the latest edition of ASME Section VIII, Division 1.

SECTION 9, API 660 FABRICATION

Adjacent longitudinal welds shall be staggered to give a minimum of a 60 degree orientation
between welds. Longitudinal welds to the shell shall be located to miss any attachment joint
by a minimum of 2 inches.

SECTION 9.6, API 660 - Heat Treatment


9.6.2.1
ADD
The bend portion of carbon steel or admiralty metal U-tubes shall be heat treated after
bending. The bend portion plus 6 inches shall be stress relieved as follows:
1.

Carbon steels over 0.125 inches thick at 1100F to 1200F for 15 minutes, slow cool.

2.

Admiralty metal over 0.125 inches thick at 800F maximum for 30 minutes, slow cool.

GENERAL INFORMATION
All shell and tube heat exchangers shall be coated or painted to comply with Painting and
Corrosion Protection Specification1 requirements.
