Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their
possessions and good and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as
they spent time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate food with glad
and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by
day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
Acts of the Apostles, chapter 2, vv.43-47

It always amazes me how the early church so freely shared in common all that they had. There was a deep
realization among the community of believers that everything they had was a gift from God to be shared.
Luke, the writer of both the gospel named after him and the Acts of the Apostles, shows through his narrative that the sharing was not limited simply to those who had something to share Lukes Gospel and the
Acts of the Apostles reveal a community reaching out to everyone, regardless of ethnicity, social standing, or
class.
I often wonder what a world would look like that took this kind of life seriously?
Today, we are taught, Get what you need, and let everyone else fend for himself or herself. Whether we
like to admit it, we still live by the false assumption that one can pull oneself up by ones own bootstraps.
Not only is that phrase, Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps, ridiculously silly, and wrong it belies a
simple theological truth: without the other I am nothing. Ultimately, that other for Christian understanding is Jesus, who gives us the opportunity to be the other for our neighbor by following him.
In a world increasingly run by dog eat dog, this message from the Acts of the Apostles is revolutionary:
All who believed were together and had all things in common Just bringing people together today, where
there is so much division and hatred, is almost impossible. I dont think that first century Christians were
much different from us today in that respect. There were many things to divide people in those days. The
believers were together.
Once people are brought together, arguments ensue about how best to govern, how best to use the resources we have in common and yet, they had all things in common. How was that possible? Well, they
ate together and they prayed together. Wow! Thats revolutionary.
First Century Christianity, in many ways looked like 21st century, but they have something to teach us. The
fallen human will put emphasis on me while the will of humanity transformed by Jesus emphasizes we
as the African proverb says, I am because we are.
How can the Church today follow this example, and be together? How can we share all in common?
What do you think?
Peace,
Pr Tim

Gods Work. Our Hands. Sunday, September 11

"God's work. Our Hands" Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America (ELCA) - our church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. Since 2013, thousands of ELCA congregations have participated in this opportunity and dedicated one day to serve communities in ways that share the love of
God with all people.
This year's date is Sunday, Sept 11....which also marks the 15 year anniversary of the Sept, 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on
the United States, so we will have at least one project that will be tailored to thank our community's first responders.
We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work - so we are planning service activities for all ages and abilities.
Make plans for your family to stay after worship...bring a potluck dish to share...wear your shirts and come dressed to
participate, at the church and in the community!
Planned activities:
Pack LWR School Kits
Pack LWR Personal Care Kits
Projects for local veterans
Serenity Haven outreach project
Bake cookies / treats for first responders & deliver
...and more!!
Bake Cookies for First Responders
Mix up and bring a batch up your favorite cookies and join in the cookie bake!
Cookies will be baked, packaged and distributed as a thank you to our local first responders.

SCHOOL KIT DONATIONS NEEDED

Back- to-school shopping has already begun, and you will be seeing some
fantastic sales on school supplies. Donations of specific supplies are needed for one of our God's Work. Our Hands projects - the making and assembling of School Kits to be shipped to Lutheran World Relief. Sign- up sheets
are posted on the Narthex bulletin board - please sign up soon, so we can
plan for the sewing of the backpack bags.

PERSONAL CARE KIT DONATIONS NEEDED

Personal Care Kits will be assembled and shipped to Lutheran World Relief, as one of our projects for God's Work. Our Hands Day. Please sign up on the Narthex bulletin board to donate
items. We need 12 of each: dark color bath towel, nail clippers, adult size toothbrush, 2-3 bars
soap (8-9 oz. total), and a sturdy comb. Please note - we are given specific instructions from
LWR as to what items are to be included. Please read over the instructions posted on the bulletin board before shopping and donating.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

September 11We will join the congregation in offering our hands to Gods work. We plan to begin our
service to others by helping to organize and package kits as our mission. This will happen after worship
service and after a potluck lunch. We will then work on projects we can share with our community and
worldwide.
September 18Sunday School will begin with classes at 9:00 a.m. Our studies will continue with scripture
and activities that focuses on the readings and gospel provided during our church services. We have classes
for young children as well as intermediate participants. We are also looking forward to gathering our adult
members for classes and discussions. More information will be available soon on adult classes.
Our goal throughout our programming is to encourage our young members to help in as many ways possible
by offering our talents to our Lord.

Each fall, local radio stations run a campaign to help

combat hunger in northwest Ohio. The goal is to provide assistance to local food pantries.
Our 2016 campaign will kick off on September 16th,
and we will collect donations through November
26th.
In addition to all of our live drive locations, collection barrels can be found throughout
the campaign at many locations in Defiance, Bryan, and Paulding. Additionally, you
will see collection cans in businesses all over northwest Ohio that you can make your
monetary donations!
There are so many individuals and families around our community that use food pantries on a local basis to put meals on their tables. Our collection of non-perishable
food items and monetary donations goes directly into local food pantries. 100% of
everything collected STAYS LOCAL!!

DEACON SUPPORT TEAM

All members should be aware of their deacon and hopefully have met him or her to discuss any concerns
or questions you may have had. Your deacons have a sincere interest in serving your needs and encourage you
to bring your needs to the attention of Pastor, the deacon group or council whichever is appropriate. In turn,
we trust you have an equally sincere interest in getting to know your deacon as a present and future friend and
confidant. We also want to emphasize the importance of speaking with Pastor whenever the need arises. He
wants to know your concerns to help provide a solution or answers to your questions. He remains the best resource within our congregation to share wisdom and knowledge. Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to listen and we turn to our deacon. In our bi-monthly
meetings, the nine deacons discuss a variety of topics concerning the spiritual welfare of the congregation.
Most importantly we are available for you when your needs might require someone to talk with other than Pastor Tim. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zions Lutheran Church and we encourage you to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises.
Please call the church office for any assistance.
Dick Anderson
