Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their
possessions and good and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as
they spent time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate food with glad
and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by
day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
Acts of the Apostles, chapter 2, vv.43-47
It always amazes me how the early church so freely shared in common all that they had. There was a deep
realization among the community of believers that everything they had was a gift from God to be shared.
Luke, the writer of both the gospel named after him and the Acts of the Apostles, shows through his narrative that the sharing was not limited simply to those who had something to share Lukes Gospel and the
Acts of the Apostles reveal a community reaching out to everyone, regardless of ethnicity, social standing, or
class.
I often wonder what a world would look like that took this kind of life seriously?
Today, we are taught, Get what you need, and let everyone else fend for himself or herself. Whether we
like to admit it, we still live by the false assumption that one can pull oneself up by ones own bootstraps.
Not only is that phrase, Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps, ridiculously silly, and wrong it belies a
simple theological truth: without the other I am nothing. Ultimately, that other for Christian understanding is Jesus, who gives us the opportunity to be the other for our neighbor by following him.
In a world increasingly run by dog eat dog, this message from the Acts of the Apostles is revolutionary:
All who believed were together and had all things in common Just bringing people together today, where
there is so much division and hatred, is almost impossible. I dont think that first century Christians were
much different from us today in that respect. There were many things to divide people in those days. The
believers were together.
Once people are brought together, arguments ensue about how best to govern, how best to use the resources we have in common and yet, they had all things in common. How was that possible? Well, they
ate together and they prayed together. Wow! Thats revolutionary.
First Century Christianity, in many ways looked like 21st century, but they have something to teach us. The
fallen human will put emphasis on me while the will of humanity transformed by Jesus emphasizes we
as the African proverb says, I am because we are.
How can the Church today follow this example, and be together? How can we share all in common?
What do you think?
Peace,
Pr Tim
