The Boxers are active members of Congregation Agudath Sholom, where Richard
has served on the Board of Directors. Until recently, Jodi served as a longtime
member of Bi-Cultural’s Board of Trustees and Executive Committee, having
been involved in the school’s Parents Association from her children’s earliest
years at Bi-Cultural. Jodi has also served on the boards of the Stamford JCC;
United Jewish Federation of Greater Stamford, New Canaan and Darien; and the
Federation’s Women’s Division. A former executive in the retail merchandising
field, Jodi has spent the past 16 years in real estate, establishing herself as a
prominent real estate broker in Stamford and surrounding communities. Richard is
in the antique jewelry business.
The Boxer’s three daughters also make their family and school community
extremely proud. All three are graduates of Ramaz High School in New York
City. Sarah, a member of the Bi-Cultural Class of 1999, graduated from Cornell
University and is working as an associate producer at CBS News in New York on
The Early Show. Nicole, Bi-Cultural Class of 2001, is also a graduate of Cornell
University and is pursuing an advanced degree in genetic counseling. Lexi,
Bi-Cultural Class of 2005, is currently completing a year of study in Israel and will
attend New York University in the fall.
With great pride and appreciation, we salute Jodi and Richard Boxer for their
service to the school and the Jewish community, and for their continued support of
the Jewish educational mission of Bi-Cultural Day School.
Malerie Yolen-Cohen
Alumni Award
It is with great pride and pleasure that Bi-Cultural Day
School honors Malerie Yolen-Cohen, Bi-Cultural Class
of 1971, with this year’s Alumni Award. Malerie clearly
personifies the best of Bi-Cultural’s alumni, actively
involved in Jewish life and Jewish leadership in her community, successful in
her professional life, and connected to our school.
Malerie met her husband Jeff, who hails from Murfreesboro, Tennessee,
when both were working in finance in Houston, Texas. Not long after their
marriage, she convinced Jeff they should return to her native Connecticut, and
when their children were born, Malerie says, “There was no question. They
were going to Bi-Cultural.” Benjamin, Bi-Cultural Class of 2004, now attends
Lehigh University. When his younger brother, Jacob, Bi-Cultural Class of 2006,
graduates from Solomon Schechter High School of Westchester in June, he
will join Ben at Lehigh.
After years of work in the financial field, Malerie, who holds a BA and MA in
psychology, switched to journalism and is today a successful freelance writer.
In addition to her past service on Bi-Cultural’s Board of Trustees, she and Jeff
have been highly visible leaders in the local Jewish community. They twice
served as co-chairs of UJA/Federation’s Super Sunday, were in the leadership
of the JCC Maccabi Games in Stamford in 2006, have been active at
Congregation Beth El, and have played important roles in other organizations
and events. Malerie was a Melton Fellow from 2006-2008. Malerie’s mother,
Jill Yolen of Greenwich, has also been an unwavering supporter of the school
through the years, in keeping with the family’s tradition of dedication to Jewish
educational excellence at Bi-Cultural Day School.
Jane Shoztic Memorial Award
Beth Praver
Beth Praver teaches 6th and 7th grade English at BCDS. She also guides the
school’s literary magazine, Kaleidoscope. Beth provides an incredibly valuable
opportunity for 7th and 8th graders to create a magazine from start to finish.
Under her guidance and supervision, the students write articles in a genre of
their choice (such as poetry, fiction, mystery). Then, she teaches them graphic
design and layout to complete their magazine. Each year, Beth also creates a class newspaper
with the 6th grade, The Medieval Times, which complements the medieval times unit. In 7th
grade, Beth uses SmartNotebook software, which enables the students to create interactive
“video” games using the Wordly Wise vocabulary words.
Originally from New Jersey, Beth received her Bachelor’s Degree from Washington University
in St. Louis, and her Master’s Degree from the John Jay School of Criminal Justice. She lived
in Israel for two years and speaks fluent Hebrew. Professionally, Beth worked as a newspaper
reporter and was the press secretary at the Israeli Consulate in New York prior to attending
graduate school. She started working at BCDS nine years ago, after her older son was born.
Beth is married to Rabbi Shaul Praver, the spiritual leader of Congregation Adath Israel in
Newtown, CT. They live in Fairfield, CT with their three children: Noah, 9, who now attends
BCDS; and Shane and Charlotte, 4-year-old twins, who will attend BCDS in the fall.
John Sakson
John Sakson teaches 6th grade Social Studies and 6th and 8th grade
English at BCDS. In Social Studies, he encourages a love of ancient
history by involving students in the arts, analyzing primary documents,
and introducing a variety of special projects. For example, when studying
Mesopotamia, students make dictionaries in their own language and design
their own city-states complete with original myths, maps and charters. He also encourages
students to understand the relationship between people and their environment, how civilizations
arise, and how different governments operate. John enhances the English curriculum in his
classes by utilizing language games, word play and web quests.
This past year, John introduced a group of BCDS students to the creative and fun world of
improvisation, teaching them how to react as various characters in different scenarios. John
also supervised a mock archeological dig at school in which students used information and
processes learned in their archeological unit to record data and formulate hypotheses.
John did his undergraduate work at Pennsylvania State University and his graduate work at
Syracuse University. He trained in creative writing and was involved in the Arts in Education
program, which prepares students to understand works of art coming to their schools. Prior to
joining the BCDS faculty six years ago, John taught writing and literature at various colleges
and universities in New York State. John lives in Stamford with his wife, Janna.
