Calculating Gutter Flow Properties Using the Izzard Equation

The Izzard equation is based on the Mannings equation for open channel flow and adapted to
the road flow cross section consisting of a gutter and the road pavement. This compound cros
has a roughness (as expressed by Mannings n) that varies across the width of flow.

Solving the Izzard equation can be done using this EXCEL spreadsheet. Generally, the road dis
known and the flow depth at the kerb and other flow properties (flow width, velocity, dV produ
required. A trial and error approach is needed the flow depth at gutter is adjusted until the
discharge matches the known discharge.

Using the EXCEL spreadsheet involves:

Typing in the input data that describes the gutter, kerb and road geometry (cells that are
tan)
Adjusting the flow depth at gutter (cell H18) until the computed discharge (cell H19) matc
known discharge. This iteration can be done manually, or using the Goal Seek function in EXC
screenshot below)

The flow properties corresponding to the gutter flow depth are in the output data (cells that a
yellow).
