Though the shape of this asymmetric shawl looks

daunting it may be one of the easiest things you ever

knit.
The design is basically 8 right angled triangles, each
offset from the previous one to form a shape
reminiscent of a Curve of Pursuit. There is no joining;
everything is achieved with short rows. Dont be
alarmed though, there is no wrapping involved and it is
all knit in garter stitch.

Stitch markers make everything so much easier. You

are going to need 7 which will remain where you place
them, until the very end, and one different one which is
going to travel with the rows as they get shorter. If you
follow the instructions very carefully for the first couple
of rows after that it will become automatic.

INSTRUCTIONS
When casting on - both at the beginning and in the middle of the
shawl use any method you prefer which gives a firm but not tight
edge.

MATERIALS

ROW 4 Sl1, K2, PTM, Knit to end

7 stitch markers

Repeat ROW 3 and ROW 4 until there are no more working

stitches. (i.e. there is nowhere to put the traveling marker)

1 different stitch marker

100g (400m) TriCoterie MCN Sock

Triangle 2 and following triangles

3.5mm circular needle 60cm

(24inches) or longer. Alter needle size

ROW 1 Sl1p, Knit to within 16 stitches of the marker, turn

(for Triangle 2 knit to 16 stitches before the end of the row, turn)

to suit your gauge.

ROW 2 PM, sl1, K2, PTM, knit to end, CO 16 st, turn

ROW 3 Sl1p, Knit to marker, RTM, turn
ROW 4 Sl1, K2, PTM, knit to end

GAUGE
Any gauge that gives a soft but firm
fabric in garter stitch.

Repeat ROW 3 and ROW 4 until there are no more working stitches
After last triangle (eighth)
Sl1p, knit all stitches on needle removing markers as you go.
(It may be necessary to knit some stitches through the back loop
depending on how the stitches present themselves)
Knit 4 rows

VARIATIONS ON A THEME
*You can of course go on knitting, adding as many triangles as you
like.

*You will have noticed there are two figures highlighted in red in the
pattern. If you wish to make this shawl in a different size (for
instance if you use Worsted, or Double Knitting yarn) these are the
only things in the pattern that need to be changed. Really.
For Worsted weight yarn I recommend Casting on 45 stitches and
staggering by 10 stitches.
For Double Knitting try casting on 60 stitches and staggering by 13
stitches.
You can see examples of both in my projects.
*You could try knitting each triangle in a different colour or yarn. It
would even look good knitted completely randomly in scraps of yarn
(maybe all those left over bits of luxury sock yarn?
