GRADE 10 ENRICHED DRAMA (ADA2OY)

COURSE OUTLINE
Course Code: ADA2OY
Grade and Type: Grade 10 Enriched
School and Department: Eastwood Collegiate Institute, English and Drama
Department
Year: 2016-2017
COURSE DESCRIPTION (or, WHAT we are going to do this year):
The grade 10 enriched Dramatic Arts course builds on the Grade 9 course; it extends the range
of performance, analytic, theoretical and thinking skills that students need for success in
secondary school programs. In this course, students study a wide variety of performance
materials, and explore dramatic forms, conventions and techniques. Students will explore a
variety of dramatic sources from various cultures and representing a range of genres. Students
will continue studying Theatre History, including Commedia Dell Arte, and will reflect on their
growth through journals and adjudications. An important focus of this course is to learn to create
characters and dramatic situations through physical and external means.

UNITS OF STUDY (or, HOW we are going to do this):

Unit 1: Foundations and Character Development
Unit 2: Mime + Stage Combat
Unit 3: Physical Theatre
Scoring

Unit 4: Commedia dell Arte

Unit 5:
Monologues + Audition Process
Unit 6: Summative: Scene Work + Script

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION:

The grade 10 Dramatic Arts course consists of 6 units, each containing multiple activities within
the unit, as well as a summative. Students are evaluated on their achievement of expectations
through the four categories indicated on the Ministry of Education documents. These categories
are listed below:
Assessment for this course will use a formula which combines term and summative
work as follows:
FINAL GRADE (100%) = TERM WORK (70%)+ SUMMATIVE WORK (30%)
Term Work = 70%
Creating and Presenting 30%
Reflecting, Responding, and Analyzing
20%
Foundations 20%

Summative = 30%
Summative Project 30%

The final mark is based on the students most recent and consistent performance by the end
of the course. Varied opportunities are used to assess and evaluate achievement: diagnostic
activities show what students already know and need to learn, formative exercises and
assignments help students improve, and summative work shows what students have finally
learned. To the extent possible, learning skills are not considered in your marks.
Level 4:
Level 3:
Level 2:

80%-100% (almost-always or always met course expectations)

70%-79% (often met course expectations; provincial standard)

MISSED WORK:

IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATION

You are expected to bring writing utensils and a place to organize your course materials, a
planner, and any relevant materials every class. Digital adjudications will usually replace the
paper versions and chromebooks will be provided for this.

It is expected that students complete all assigned work in a timely manner. Students who
are absent on the day of an assessment (e.g. test or presentation) or when an assignment
is due, must speak with their teacher when they return to make arrangements to
complete the required work. Whenever possible, students will inform their teacher in
advance of their absence.
Each assessment will have a final date of submission after which it will no longer be
graded. This date will be clearly communicated to students by the teacher. Work that has
not been submitted by the final due date will be deemed incomplete for the purposes of
grade reporting. Failure to complete all required work will negatively impact a students
final grade, and may prevent successful attainment of the credit.
In addition, students who do not submit work in a timely manner should expect to have
this reflected in the Learning Skills and comments sections of the report card.
PLAGIARISM:

Do not copy other peoples work. Plagiarism is stealing someones material and ideas
without giving them credit, and trying to pass off their work as your own. Its wrong.
Students who commit an academic offence will face one or more of the
following consequences:
Redoing part or all of the assessment under direct supervision, or completing an alternate
assignment.
Limited access to academic recognition, school awards and scholarships.
Additional consequences related to the students behaviour, including community service
hours, detentions

and/or suspensions.
LEARNING SKILLS:

Learning Skills contribute to effective learning and they will be part of the report card.
The skills are as follows: Responsibility, Organization, Independent Work,
Collaboration, Initiative, and Self Regulation. The evaluation of these skills, apart
from any that may be included as part of the curriculum expectations of the course,
should NOT be considered in the determination of percentage grades.

Parents/Guardians:

Communication is essential to student success. The WRDSB requires parents to give consent to email contact
with a teacher. Parents can give this by registering via the WRDSB consent webform which appears at the
bottom of our ECI website homepage: https://secure.wrdsb.ca/subscribe/

Please complete this in order to facilitate open communications between our class and your home.

Additionally, I use Remind as way to help parents and students know when assignments and important events
are happening. Instructions have been sent home in paper copy to help you set up your account in our voluntary
system. Communications come via email or text, whichever you select. You may unsubscribe to this service at
any time.

Finally, my preferred forum for communications with you remains my work email. Please feel free to email at
Karen_lillie@wrdsb.on.ca

Looking forward to a great semester!
