What is REC?
The Roberts Environmental Center is a
campus research center at CMC. The goal of
the REC is to involve students in real-world
environmental issues and to train them to
analyze issues from broad perspectives,
considering science, economics, and policy.

Water Pricing Structures
Explored the relationship
between water pricing
structures and consumption
rates using surveys and GIS
modeling.

CMC Annual
Environmental Report

PaintCare

Collaborated with CMC


Facilities Department to
produce the first
comprehensive CMC annual
environmental and
sustainability report.

Entered into a paid


consulting contract with
PaintCare, Inc. and
produced a report that
assessed multiple
strategies for promoting
responsible paint
purchases and disposal.

Employed pre- and


post-educational workshop
surveys to determine the
scope of considerations that
citizens use to assess the
risks and opportunities of
traditional energy sources,
with a focus on fracking.

Worked with local elementary


and middle schools to create
replicable, environmental and
sustainability lesson plans.

Organized, guided and


recruited 5C students to
work with city leaders,
Claremont Colleges faculty,
and Claremont residents in
the city-wide effort to win
the $5M Georgetown
Energy Prize Competition.

organizations focused on
community education and
impact. Examples of past
projects are a report on solar
energy policy in California.
Projects for the next year will
include outreach work with
the Chino Basin Water
Conservation District and
education on food waste
policy in California.

Research explores
environmental issues from a
regulatory and best
practices perspective. Some
projects that will be
continuing this year are an
electronic waste recycling
project and water district
price mapping project.

Focuses on energy issues in


California, working with local
and regional organizations.
Projects have included
energy auditing for a local
retirement communitys
campus, consulting on solar
and HVAC systems, and
creating a scorecard for the
Claremont Energy Challenge.

Environmental Consulting

Natural Sciences

Provides environmental consulting


services to local businesses,
organizations, and nonprofits.
Examples of past projects include
creating an annual sustainability
report for CMC and working with
Sustainable Claremont to create a
green business certification
program. Ongoing projects include
conducting an economic analysis for
a new conservation project in Mono
Lake and assisting CMC with
campus sustainability projects.

This is a brand new team for the


upcoming school year that will focus
on ecology and natural sciences.
Current plans for projects include
collaboration with the Chino Basin
Water Conservation district to
research drought-resistant plants,
creation of climate change/water
focused science curriculum, and an
environmental impact survey of
campus development. If you have
