Project viability
That is not to say that pipeline building and pipe coating
activities are completely frozen. Numerous projects are
still economically viable; others are too advanced to
cancel or postpone. In certain countries (not the least in
China, Russia and the Middle East) such projects are
not driven by purely financial considerations, but are
part of longer-term policy and government-set
strategies. In addition, some pipelines are in need of
rehabilitation or replacement for safety, rather than
purely economic reasons. There is also an expanding

Pipeline potential
Ice pigging has great potential for the pipeline
industry, says Matthew Stephenson, Ice Pigging
Director at Suez Advanced Solutions. Any pipeline that
suffers from an accumulation of loose material such as
sand, gravel, sediment, or sticky material such as wax,
can see the low risk benefits of using ice over other
techniques. Much of the work we do here at Suez is
finding and testing the right applications of ice pigging
and matching them to industrial problems that exist
today. The most attractive potential for the pipeline
industry is the low risk, high effectiveness, and fast

Coating benefits
And, to date, the company has seen no issues when using
the technique with an internally coated pipeline. Ice
pigging is not an aggressive technique and does not
damage the pipe. It is the equivalent of wiping the inside
of the pipe and will only remove soft or loosely adhered
contaminants, Stephenson explains. It is not as
aggressive as many solid pigging systems or high
pressure water jetting. However, it is a mechanical clean
and is many times more effective that high velocity
flushing or air scouring techniques. Most of our developments at present are about making the process faster
and easier to deliver in remote areas of the world.
Suez Advanced Solutions is now trialling ice pigging
in a number of new applications. A recent oil industry
test was designed to address the problem of the
build-up of waxy deposits in oil flow lines and risers.

Just like its counterpart in Europe, this new conference aims to bring
together leading pipeline contractors, operators, pipe mills and pipe
coaters, engineers and specifiers, researchers, raw materials and
machinery suppliers. It will thus provide a platform for all links in
the supply chain to interact and discuss market needs, novel pipeline
coating and protection technologies, as well as industry trends,
focusing in particular on issues specific to the Americas.
This is a unique opportunity to network and exchange expertise with
colleagues and potential customers, as well as to learn about existing
and potential technology innovations and become familiar with new
products and services available to the industry
