Sevies Get a Headstart

Connor MacDonald 22, William Azrak 22, and Billy Wagner 22
The Destinys Child of Form I

During the month of June,
Priory was buzzing with activity as
many of next years students attended
summer school. For rising 7th graders
the morning schedule consisted of
Latin (taught by Mr. MacDonald),
math (taught by two graduating
seniors, Alexander Amice and Tim
Thompson), and English (taught by
Mr. Woodcock), followed by lunch
and X period. In the afternoon, kids
had the choice of science, art, and
chess.

A survey of students in the
final week found that 10/14 students

believed the camp helped prepare

them for the beginning of the school
year. For instance, in Latin class
students learned 2-1-2 adjectives,
how to conjugate verbs, and how
to translate stories from our Latin
textbooks. On Fridays there were
competitions to earn doughnuts and
other prizes to reward students for
the all the work they have done over
the week. Everyone surveyed said that
some classes require more thought
than others.

Students have different
opinions about their favorite subjects.

Logan Donnelly said he especially

liked Latin, calling it intriguing and
interesting, while Danny Retezny
said his favorite is science because
it is fun and we get to do interesting
experiments. Nick Parafiniuk said
summer school is fun because it
keeps me active and not sitting
around watching TV.

Cardinals Update
Stephen Rashford 19
Fan of Sports and Athletics

Veteran pitcher Adam Wainwright,

right, has been dealing as of late, after
some struggles during the first half of
the season.

The Saint Louis Cardinals have
been in second or third place in the
NL Central all year, trying to discover
a way to catch up with the Chicago
Cubs. But the good news for Cards
fans is that, at the moment, St. Louis
has one of the two wildcard berths.
Its crazy to say this, but even being 14
games back of the Cubs we still are the
fifth best team in the National League.
The Cubs are sitting comfortably
at 84-47 and unless a series of injuries
occur, they should keep first place.
In the NL West, the LA Dodgers and
the San Francisco Giants are within
two games of each other at 73-58, and
02

71-60, respectively. The Washington

Nationals are in firm control of the
NL East with 77-55 and a 9 game
cushion to second place. This means
the Cards are at the moment in the
second wild card spot one game
back of San Fran at 70-61. The other
teams pushing for the two spots are
the Pittsburgh Pirates, the New York
Mets, and the Miami Marlins.
The Redbirds possess a 10-5
record over the last 15 games, and
have a nice stretch in the schedule
coming up. They play the Cincinnati
Reds away during in the first week
in September, followed immediately

by the Pirates at PNC Park, and

finally come home for a four game
series Brewers against the Milwaukee
Brewers. The starting rotation is
proving more reliable as Adam
Wainright and Carlos Martinez
are currently dominating opposing
hitters with two strong starts with
8 innings pitched. The bullpen has
also remained strong, with only two
runs allowed in 10 innings against the
visiting Brewers.
Look for the Cards to keep
this strong stride into the middle of
September, at least until the Cubs
come a-knockin.

Varsity Soccer Update: The Tourney Was a

Journey

Pinky and the Brain

The Varsity soccer program,
entering the season with a preseason
ranking of #5 among small schools,
opened its season with the annual
Metro League Tournament, a
tournament in which the Rebels have
historically yielded great results. In
the quarterfinals, the Rebels sought
revenge against an intense Lutheran
South team and opened the first
fifty minutes of the season with four
unanswered goals. John Forshaw
found separation in the box on two
occasions to score two of the goals,
and Mark Ciapciak grabbed the other
two, showing a knack for getting in
behind the defense from the wing.
As the game went on South switched
into a high pressure defense, which
put Priory on their heels. South made
it a one goal game with a bar-down
shot, a blooper into the far post, and a
header, but the Rebels defense held on

in the end to win 4-3.

In the semifinals awaited
an MICDS team that boasts a
strong offense, and with changes in
defensive tactics, the Rebels managed
a clean sheet despite two close
opportunities. A carefully weighted
through ball from Alex Mellas put
Forshaw in on a breakaway, and he
finished by dribbling around the
keeper and slotting it into the goal
from a tight angle. This goal was all
that was necessary, although there
was a plethora of prime scoring
opportunities.

In the final, the Rebels
played a recent rival in Westminster,
who were coming off strong results
against John Burroughs (1-0) and
Principia (3-0). Following a 0-0
scoreline at halftime, Westminster
found the back of the net twice early
in the second half. Despite a great

preponderance of chances to score,

the Rebels found themselves goalless
at the end. In the past three Metro
League Tournaments, the Rebels have
finished 2nd (2014), 1st (2015), and
2nd (2016).

Tuesday marked the
beginning of a second tournament,
the St. Dominic Tournament. Priory
came out strong in the opening
game against a new Fort Zumwalt
East program, winning 6-0. Goals
came from John Forshaw (2), Mark
Ciapciak, Patrick Milburn, Jack
Hopson, and Harry Lindmark.
Although he didnt get on the
scoresheet, Tate Callahan showcased
his skills with a gnarly Ronaldo
chop. The Rebels will wrap up the
tournament with Borgia on Thursday
and Oakville (who is coming off of a
relentless 9-0 victory against Borgia)
on Saturday.

Mass Shootings: America vs. Other Countries

Patrick Shanahan 17
Self-Proclaimed Real Journalist

Lives are lost, families torn
apart and somber clouds of fear
cover communities. These scenes are
becoming too familiar in America.

From 2000 to 2014, America
led all nations in documented mass
shootings with 133 more than 20
times higher than Germanys six,
which was second. A mass shooting is
when there are four or more victims,
according to the U.S. Congressional
Research Service.

While Americas large
population and greater access to guns
affects these numbers, many experts
agree the problem must be addressed.
The mass shooting at an Orlando
nightclub in June prompted new
discussion of gun laws and steps that
could be taken to possibly prevent
similar incidents. Some are calling for
drastic change in legislation regarding
guns.

Jaclyn Schildkraut, a professor
of criminal justice at the State
University of New York-Oswego and
Orlando native, said, Mass shooters
have historically acted in violation of
existing laws, and still gained access to
guns through legal means.

Searching for Answers in All the Wrong

Places?
Thomas de Wolff 20
Avid Firefox User

Recently, I heard of a
conspiracy theory claiming Google
was protecting the image of the
presidential candidates. According to
Youtube news program SourceFed,
when one types in Hillary Clinton
ind in the Google search bar, the first
things to come up are not at all related
to her indictment by the federal
government. However, on Yahoo and
Bing, the recommended results are
associated with her indictment. I then
read an article which said that Google
had viewed and responded to this
claim. I wanted to know if they had
really addressed the issue by updating
the rankings.

As far as we know, Googles
algorithm ranks search results by
their popularity. It uses a complicated
system, and not all of its details are
publicized. However, what should
normally happen is the most popular
terms are ranked first.

As SourceFed had indicated,
when I went to Google and typed in
Hillary Clinton ind the top three
results were, as follows; Hillary
Clinton Indiana, Hillary Clinton
India, and plain Hillary Clinton ind.
When I tried this on Yahoo and Bing,

the answers were quite different. The

top three results on Yahoo and Bing
all referred to potential indictment,
which some Republicans are calling
for.

I was justifiably infuriated.
I felt that the claims must now be
true, despite my initial skepticism.
If you think about it, who would
really search Hillary Clinton India
over Hillary Clinton indictment?
However, this was just the tip of the
iceberg.

I decided to use the program
known as Google Trends, which
enables you to find the popularity
of a search term over time. Hillary
Clinton indictment was consistently
more searched not just in the United
States, but all around the world, when
compared to Hillary Clinton India,
which was not very popular in the
United States, except for a couple
of weeks where the interest slightly
spiked. Overall, Hillary Clinton
indictment was almost EIGHT
TIMES more popular than Hillary
Clinton India.

Now, perhaps Google was
doing this for both candidates. Just
to prove that this isnt solely a plot by

the left to protect Hillary, I decided to

check if Donald Trump was receiving
the same treatment. Donald Trump
has been accused of being racist on
many occasions. When I looked up
Donald Trump ra, on Google, the
first three terms were related to his
rallies and a rap song about him. On
Bing and Yahoo, they were all about
racism. To corroborate my suspicions
of bias, I again went to Google Trends.
In July 2016, the term Donald Trump
racist was searched FORTY-EIGHT
TIMES more often than Donald
Trump rap song.

While this is not technically
illegal, as Google can display what it
wants, it is deceitful and dodgy.
It very much looks like our access
to information is being manipulated
from the inside. The reasons behind
this obfuscation are unclear, but
assuming that this is an intended
outcome, as opposed to a poorlydesigned algorithm, it raises the
question: What is Google trying to
achieve?

The Record asks: What do
you think? Are search results, amd the
autofill function, manipulated in order
to influence the political process?

La Liga Update
Alex Mellas 17
Messi

Two weeks ago the 2016/17
Spanish La Liga started up for
another bangin season. The Catalan
superstars FC Barcelona led by their
bleached-haired captain, Leo Messi,
have started out the season well,
defeating each of their opponents in
their two matches, Real Betis (6-2) and
Athletic Bilbao (1-0).

Although their many stars are
playing very well, and the team is at the
top of the table, the Brazilian Neymar
Jr. is still on vacation after receviving
a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics. In
addition, the Catalonians have recently
sold their first string goalkeeper,
Claudio Bravo, to the English club
Manchester City, leaving a spot to be
filled by either Marc-Andr Ter Stegen
or the new signing, Jasper Cillessen.

Similarly, their long-lasting
rivals, Real Madrid, have started off

the season very strong. Los Blancos

(The Whites) have also won their first
two games against Real Sociedad (3-0)
and Celta Vigo (2-1). Gareth Bale,
the right winger for Real Madrid, has
scored twice in these two games, while
the well-known Cristiano Ronaldo has
scored zero. Will Gareth Bale be taking
Ronaldos role as top goalscorer for the
Spanish Club?

The 2013 league champions,
Athletico Madrid, who typically finish
top three, have had a rough start to
the season, tying both Alaves (1-1)
and Leganes (0-0), two teams which
were promoted to the first division this
year. As in years past, La Liga will have
many competitive teams, but all eyes
are on FC Barcelona, who have won
the league in the past two years.

Dont Breathe Review

Peter Hopkins 17
Petey Chopkins, IMDb user

Dont Breathe is an excellent
thriller that will constantly have its
viewers on the edge of their seats. The
film is directed by Fede Alvarez, who
also directed the Evil Dead remake.

The plot is captivating from
the start. Three Detroit criminals
attempt to break into and rob the
house of a blind veteran who has just
received a six figure inheritance. Soon
they realize that the veteran can see
them using his hearing, and chaos
ensues when he then traps them
within his house. Now trapped inside
the house, the thieves are forced to
remain quiet in order to avoid the

both his money and his secrets lying
in the basement.

All the actors are excellent
in the film, especially the female
lead Jane Levy. Levy, who plays the
character of Rocky, and actor Stephen
Lang, who plays the blind veteran,
both are phenomenal in their roles.
Dylan Minnette, who plays Alex, also
gives a solid performance that helps to
build the fear and tension throughout
the film.

Each scene is filled with great
tension, and the amplified sound
effects and long periods of silence

engross the audience completely.

Dont Breathe is extremely fast
paced and does not let up soon. In its
88 minute runtime, every scene works
to build the action and suspense,
never leaving the viewer feeling bored
or feeling like theyve seen the same
thing twice. I recommend this movie
to anyone who loves thrillers or
horror movies, since it has elements
of both. I would give this movie a
9/10, as I left the theater without any
major complaints and was focused on
all my favorite scenes, something not
seen in most horror movies today.

Junk Food Review: Beef Flavored Ramen

Victor Djavaherian 17 and Tyler Bealke 17
Junk Food Connoisseurs

There are two years in the
history of the world that everyone
should know: 1958 and 1975, the
year ramen was created and the
year Maruchan brought ramen
to the United States of America.
Everyone loves ramen: college kids,
grandparents, and babies alike enjoy
the decadent meal. Ramen, originally
created in Japan, is noodles served
in flavored broth (to be honest if you
didnt know that already you dont
deserve to be reading this article).
This article is a review of the beloved
meal. I hope you all enjoy!

Initially, we were expecting the
beef flavored rendition of Maruchans
highly touted product, ramen
noodles, to be the Runt of the Ramen
Litter. Prior to our beef ramen

tasting, we had already been exposed

to the timeless taste of succulent
chicken flavored ramen, as well as the
bold, but not painfully spicy taste of
picant chicken flavored ramen. We
didnt think that Maruchan would be
able to make yet another tasty flavor
of ramen, but once again they didnt
disappoint.

In terms of appearance, beef
ramen flaunts a gorgeous dark brown
tint. The brown hue seems to give off
a more sophisticated feel that says to
onlookers Im a savvy shopper who
enjoys a cheap, college dorm roomtier meal, but also has a sophisticated
palate that the taste of chicken
flavored ramen cant satisfy. Upon
first taste, we were underwhelmed, as
it lacked the sharp, easily recognizable

taste of beloved chicken ramen. But

after a few more spoonfuls, we began
to appreciate the more subtle taste
of beef ramen. In comparison to its
chicken flavored counterpart, beef
ramen lacks in saltiness, but makes
up for it with a more savory taste. It
satiates a certain craving that chicken
ramen cant satisfy. We think this
ramen will appeal to sophisticated,
hipster ramen enthusiasts who
want to stand out from the crowd
of fellow ramen eaters, without
sacrificing flavor. Beef ramen was
surprisingly satisfying and exceeded
my expectations. I rate beef ramen as
an 8/10, and commend Maruchan on
yet another great ramen flavor.
