Rationale for SLT


After a comprehensive review of my third grade level Criterion Reference Test data, my team identified ELA as the area of focus-specifically mastery of reading and comprehending literature and informational text. In grade 3 instructional time will focus on:
Ask and answer question as the student reads referring to the text as the basis for the answers
Recount stories and describe connections , acknowledge difference in points of view, compare and contrast different key ideas,
themes, settings and plots of stories by the same author in fiction or in non-fictional text
Describe characters and overall structure of a story and know and use text features of information text and how it contributes to
understanding of the text
Determine meaning of words & phrases, explain how specific aspects of the text contribute to what is conveyed in the story
Use text features as tools, describe logical connections between particular parts of text, an describe the relationship between a
series of events, ideas or concepts.
In the spring of 2015 the second grade teachers administered the end of year CRT which consisted of students reading and
responding to text, identifying words and phrases that suggest feelings; explaining the differences between books; identifying basic
similarities and differences between tests; and describing the connections between events, individuals and pieces in a text. I am
using this data as my fall 2015 base-line data.

I'm disappointed with this score. I do not believe this assessment truely reflected the knowledge and growth of my students over
the year especially when compared to data from Achieve3000, Dibels, and Achievement Network.
