Free Fall Acceleration

1. A falling stone takes 0.28s to travel past a window 2.2m tall. From what height above the top
of the window did the stone fall? (Choosing downward as positive) [2.1m]

2. A stone is dropped from the top cliff. It hits the ground below after 3.25s. How high is the
cliff? (Choosing downward to be positive) [51.8m]

3. Estimate
(a) How long it took King Kong to fall straight down from the top of the Empire State
Building (380m high) and
(b) His velocity just before landing?
(Choose downward to be positive) [8.8s, 86ms-1]

4. A ball player catches a ball 3.0s after throwing it vertically upward. With what speed did he
throw it, and what height did it reach? (Choose upward as positive)
Assuming it was caught the same height it was thrown.
[15ms-1,11m]

5. Supposed that a ball is dropped from a tower 70m high. How far will the ball have fallen
after time t1=1.00s, t2=2.00s, and t3=3.00s? [4.9m, 19.6m, 44.1m]

6. Supposed the ball is thrown downward with initial velocity 3ms-1, instead of being dropped.
(a) What would be its position after 1.00s and 2.00s? [7.9m, 25.6m]
(b) What would be its speed after 1.00s and 2.00s? [12.8ms-1, 22.6 ms-1; 9.81 ms-1,19.6 ms-1]
(Compare with the speeds of a dropped ball)

7. Let us consider when a ball is thrown upward at 15 ms-1. It reach a height of 11.5m.
Calculate,
(a) How high it goes
(b) How long the ball is in air before it comes back to hand
(c) How much time it takes for the ball to reach maximum height.
(d) The velocity of the ball when it returns to the throwers hand.
[Take upward as positive]
[11.5m, 3.06s, 1.53s, -15ms-1]

Projectile Motion
1. A movie stunt driver on a motorcycle speeds horizontally off a 50.0m high cliff. How fast
must the motorcycle leave the cliff top to land on level ground below 90.0m from the base
of the cliff where the cameras are? Ignore air resistance.
(Take upward as positive) [28.2 ms-1]

2. A football is kicked at an angle 37.0 with a velocity of 20.0 ms-1 as shown. Calculate,
(a) The maximum height
(b) The time travel before the football hits the ground
(c) How far away it hits the ground
(d) The velocity vector at the maximum height
(e) The acceleration vector at maximum height
(f) Assume the ball leaves the foot at ground level, and ignore air resistance & rotation of
the ball.
(Take upward as positive) [7.35m, 2.45s, 39.2m, 16 ms-1]

3. Supposed a Napoleons cannons had a muzzle velocity vo of 60ms-1. At what angle should it
have been aimed (ignore air resistance) to strike a target 320m away? [30.3or 59.7]

4. Supposed a football was punt and left the punters foot at a height of 1.00m above the
ground with a velocity 20ms-1. How far did the football travel before hitting the ground?
Take y-direction as positive upward. [40.5m]

5. A projectile is fired with an initial speed of 65.2ms-1 at an angle of 34.5 above the horizontal
on a long flat firing range. Determine,
(a) The maximum height reached by the projectile
(b) The total time in the air
(c) The total horizontal distance covered (that is, the range)
(d) The velocity of the projectile 1.50s after firing.
(upwards to be positive y-direction)
[69.6m, 7.54s, 405m, 58.1ms-1 and 22.5 direction above the horizontal]
