1. Problem 1 (10 points)
When designing the base of a cantilever retaining wall, which component (toe or heel) typically governs
the thickness of the base?

2. Problem 2 (15 points)

For a 14 inch thick stem of a cantilever retaining wall using #5 horizontal bars {60 ksi Grade) determine
the spacing of the horizontal bars in each face of the wall based on minimum steel requirements per ACI
318-11.

3. Problem 3 (10 points)

What is the factored nominal shear friction capacity of 4 - #7 bars (Grade 60 ksi) crossing a potential
crack plane consisting of concrete placed against hardened concrete with the surface intentionally
roughened per ACI 318-11 section 11.6.9? The bars are fully developed and maximum shear transfer
does not control. Assume normal weight concrete.

4. Problem 4 (15 points)

For a deep beam reinforced concrete member, determine the factored nominal capacity of a bottle
shaped strut with reinforcement provided as specified in ACI 318 section A.3.3. The strut has the
following parameters. Acs= 150 in2 and(= 5.5 ksi.

6. Problem 6 {SO points)

1. The continuous foundation shown supports a wood frame stucco wall. The geotechnical
engineer for the project recommends designing the footing for a Yi inch settlement over 25 feet.
a. Material Data:
i. Concrete = 5000 psi
ii. Steel = 60 ksi
b. Assumptions:
i. Footing El = 9.65 x 109 lb.in2
ii. Full fixity beyond design points
iii. Wo L=500 lb/ft. (including footing and soil)
iv. WLL= lOOO lb/ft.
Design the footing for the 0.5 in differential over the 25 feet. Sketch the reinforcement.
{This is a conceptual question and requires a thoughtful approach to design....)
