Chem 17 Problem Set 1

First Semester, AY 2016-2017

I. Modified True or False. Write TRUE if the statement is true, otherwise change the
underlined phrases to make the statement true.
1. The enthalpy change of the reaction can be directly measured from the heat
flow provided that the reaction occurred at constant volume.
2. The higher the heat capacity is of a calorimeter, the greater is the amount of
energy input or output needed to change the temperature of that calorimeter.
3. In the calorimetry experiment, the dissolution of KCl in water is exothermic in
nature and registered a negative temperature change in the thermometer.
4. In the calorimetry experiment, the precipitation of CaCO3 is found to be
exothermic because the solvent-solvent interactions are favored.
5. The Ellingham diagram is a plot of T versus G with a slope of S and a yintercept of H.
6. A given metal can reduce the oxides of all other metals with the lines lying
above the given metals line on the diagram at all T.
7. The oxidation of solid carbon to carbon monoxide is spontaneous and has a
positive slope in the Ellingham Diagram.
8. Since rate constant k is dependent on the total ionic concentration, KCl and
Na2S2O8 are used to maintain the ionic strength of the solutions.
9. The Arrhenius equation specifically relates the logarithmic increase of the rate
with absolute temperature.
10. The reaction of I2 with Na2S2O3 is said to be complete when the solution turns
dark green because of the presence of starch-iodine complex.
II. Multiple Choice
1. In the calibration part of the Calorimetry experiment, a student drove the test

3. In a coffee cup calorimeter, 10.00 mL of 1.0 M NaOH was mixed with 5.00
mL of 1.0 M HCl. An increase in the calorimeter temperature of 2.50 0C was
observed. Now, in the same calorimeter, 11.00 mL of 1.0 M NaOH was mixed
with 5.00 mL of 1.0 M HCl. What will happen to the observed change in the

II. Increase in the reaction order
III.Decrease in the activation energy Ea
A. I only
C. I and II only
B. I and III only
D. I, II and III
7. Which of the following statements is true?
I. The x-value of the linearized Arrhenius equation represents the inverse of
the absolute temperature.
II. The y-value of the linearized Arrhenius equation represents the natural
logarithm of the rate constant.
III.The y-intercept of the linearized Arrhenius equation represents the natural
logarithm of the Arrhenius constant.
IV. The slope of the linearized Arrhenius equation represents the activation
energy divided by the universal gas constant R.
A. I only
C. I, II and III only
B. I and II only
D. I, II, III and IV
8. Which of the following statement is true?
A. An increase in temperature produces more energetically favoured collisions
with proper orientation.
B. Catalysts lower the activation energy of the native reaction pathway by
mimicking the structure of the reactants.
C. The higher the activation energy is, the higher is the value of k.
D. All statements are false.
III.Problem Solving
1. The heat capacity of a constant pressure calorimeter (inclusive of the 500.00
mL aqueous medium it contains) is Ccal = 61.30 J 0C1. In this same
calorimeter, 200.00 mL 0.20 M BaBr2 and 300.00 mL K2CO3 were made to
react, producing a white precipitate. It was assumed that the reaction proceeded
to completion; that is the maximum amount of product allowed by
stoichiometry was obtained. For this reaction, the temperature of the
calorimeter increased from 28.00C to 30.50C.
Given the specific heats: s (KBr) = 0.4522 J g1 0C1; s (BaCO3) = 0.4325 J
g1 0C1

Given the molar masses: MW (KBr) = 119.00 g mol-1; MW (BaCO3) =

197.34 g mol-1
(a) Write the balanced net ionic equation for the reaction described above.
(b) Calculate the reaction enthalpy, Hrxn, of (a) in kJ mol1.
The literature value of Hrxn for the reaction in (a) is 4.1 kJ mol1. To
explain the observed difference between the experimental and literature values,
sources of error were analyzed. One would be the assumption that the reaction
proceeded to completion.
(c) Briefly explain (in no more than 3 sentences) why such assumption cannot
account for the observed error.
2. Consider the reaction between chloromethane, CH3Cl, and NaOH in DMSO
(solvent) that was studied by a Chem 17 Student. Kinetic data at different
reactant concentrations and temperatures are given below.
