APENDICITIS

APPENDIX: The appendix is a small tissue that is found in the large intestine. Its
ubication is on the right iliac fossa. To be more specific in the cecum. The
appendix has no an specific function in the body, but it can become diseased.

DEFINITION: Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, this is a medical
emergency that requires surgery, because if it is no treated it can cause a fatal
infection called peritonitis.
CAUSES: Appendicitis ocurrs when the appendix becomes blocked by stool, a
foreign body, or cancer.
SYMPTONS: The symptons can vary. The first sympton is a pain near the navel.
This pain can be low and then increase. This pain can concentrates in the
McBurneys point.
Other symptons can be:
-Fever
-Diarrhea
-painful urination
-loss of apetite
-nausea and vomiting
DIAGNOSIS:
Diagnosing appendicitis can be tricky, because its symptons are similar to
other diseases, but usually you can use some tests to get your diagnosis. For
example: abdominal exam, rectal exam and blood test.
TREATMENT:
The treatment for appendicitis is a surgery to remove the appendix, which is
called an appendectomy. But if appendix has an abscess, you should drain the
abscess with pus and fluid, then make a treatment with antibiotics. Finally you
will be able to remove the appendix.
RECOMMENDATION:
If you have any of the mentioned symptoms, seek medical attention quickly,
because the time of diagnosis and treatment is very important. Do not eat,
drink, or use any pain remedies, antacids or heating pads, which can cause an
inflamed appendix to rupture.
