PRACTICE INQUIRY STRATEGIES FOR

ENHANCING INSTRUCTION

Emily Munn, Advanced Academics Coach,

Bransford Ave.
Oliver Library, Session 2 (only)
This session will consider how inquiry and
discovery may serve as the foundation for
any learning environment. We will be
engaged in hands-on activities that
demonstrate the types of deep, critical
thinking and problem solving that we want
all students to experiences. Strategies from
advanced academic frameworks will be used
in this session, but may be applied in any
setting to spark interest and motivation and
help students develop critical problem
solving skills.

There is great potential for teachers to use
the motivating power music has to help our
students practice and master reading and
writing concepts once only thought of being
taught in the reading classroom. Join in the
discussion as the Shayne Elementary team
shares specific lesson plans and successful
strategies for creating parallels between
literacy and special area classes.

Feeling safe is a basic and fundamental need

in every school setting. When students and
teachers do not feel safe, teaching and
learning cannot occur. What are the essential
elements of a school multi-hazard safety
plan? The need for educators to be prepared
for any crisis emergency begins through
planning and building a solid safety plan,
practice through drills, and tabletop
discussion. The issue of school safety is
necessary and important. Come learn
necessary steps and precautions you can
practice today to ensure the safety of your
school.

WHATS THE GAME PLAN? IEP PLANS FOR

SUCCESS!
Monique Ferrell, Oliver Middle
Rm. 116, Session 1 & 2
The U.S. Supreme Court has referred to the
Individualized Education Program (IEP) as
the modus operandi for the provision of
FAPE to students with disabilities. Discover
common pitfalls and that educators must
avoid both procedurally and substantively to
ensure IEPs are legally defensible. Ready?
Set? Go! Whats the Game plan will aid
teachers in creating IEP plans which will
enable our students to always be set for
success!
MOBY MAX: FIND AND FIX LEARNING GAPS!
Kim Warbritton, Shayne Elementary
Rm. 129, Session 2 (only)
In order to be effective in the classroom,
teachers need to know their students
strengths and weaknesses. Moby's
diagnostic tests quickly assess student
proficiency on each standard in the
common core, letting you know exactly
where gaps in student knowledge exist.
Even better, Moby automatically assigns
the appropriate lessons to target each
student's missing skills. Come learn how
to set up your classroom in Moby Max, set
a diagnostic, assign lessons, and more.
Participants are suggested to bring laptops
and classroom rosters.

QUESTIONING TECHNIQUES TO PROMOTE

EVIDENCE-BASED ARGUMENTATION AND
TO INCREASE LOGICAL REASONING
Kim Hawtin, Oliver Middle
Rm. 221, Session 1 & 2
If your goal for your students is that they
leave your class being better problem
solvers and more logical thinkers than when
you got them, this is the session for
you. You will get proven techniques to
increase your level of questioning to
promote higher-order thinking. Methods are
applicable to all grade levels and disciplines
and provide built-in differentiation.

RESTORATIVE PRACTICES: COMMUNITY IN

THE CLASSROOM
Lindsey Garcia, Oliver Middle
Rm. 119, Session 1 & 2
In a new study, more than 90 percent of
educators agree that behavioral issues
impede student learning and that academic
interventions cant be successful if
behavioral issues arent addressed. Come
join the discussion of how to create a
successful community in your classroom.
Participants will examine and social and
emotional strategies designed to enable
students to successfully work together.
WHEN THE MATH ANSWER DOESNT MATTER
Shelley Karraker & Hawaya Wilson,
Shayne Elementary & Oliver
Rm. 138, Session 1 & 2
Our math standards require deeper math
understanding than simply getting the right
answer. In order to truly master the
standards, our students need to think
mathematically and problem solve using a
variety of strategies. Tricks and short cuts
wont get it done in the long run.
