Pressure is defined as a force per unit area, e.g. pounds per

square inch: 1 atmosphere is the pressure at sea level exerted
by the weight of the earths atmosphere. Pressure can also be
defined in terms of the weight of a column of water: A 6
meter high column of water exerts a force of 8.6 pounds per
square inch. The volume of water has no effect on the
pressure, i.e. a 2000 gallon tank and a two inch PVC pipe will
have the same pressure at the base if they are the same height.
