At times union leads to violent battles between workers and business
owners.
Following years the idea of Labor Day caught on America.
o But Riot in Haymarket square in Chicago in 1886 which lead to the death of
policemen and execution of 4 union leaders.

President Grover Cleveland

Signed a law making Labor Day as a Federal Day in America

President Franklin D. Roosevelt

Signed a law making 8 hours of work per day and 5 days a week.
1938 it was signed during the great depression

Labor Union

Refers to an organization that represent the collective interest of the workers which is
officially recognized
Purpose to influence HR policies
Collective voice to talk to management

Collective Bargaining Agreement

The management and the union will negotiate the terms of employment

Bargaining Unit

Group of employees recognize for collective bargaining purpose


Example: 5000 Employees cannot go to negotiate only the bargaining unit will represent
and negotiate

Types of Negotiations

Distributive A negotiation which one party wins


Integrated- A negotiation which everybody wins. Both sides of the party wins

Collective Bargaining

Negotiation between employer and group of employees


o Protect the employees
Relationship of the employer to the employees
Everyones interest are considered
o Example: Higher pay in hours but less productivity company may lose workers
because of higher wages

Grievance agreement
Refers to the disagreement of the contract and thorough investigation of disputes arising out of
an alleged violation

Open Door Policy


Employers leave their doors open to encourage the workers and to demonstrate a good
relationship with the employees.
