Foreword
Thank you very much for purchasing MPE-822R/825R series total station!
This manual makes all round introduction of the new type total station in details. Please read this manual carefully
before using the instrument.
Features:
1 Menu display with icons
MPE-822R/825R total station adopts icon menu, which is of high intelligence degree, powerful functions, and
easy operation. Besides, it can tailor measuring programs for client to fulfill requirements of various
professional surveys and engineering surveys.
2 Absolute digital index
The instrument is preassembled with absolute digital index; measuring can be directly carried out once the
instrument is started. Information of direction angle will not be lost event when power is reset during the operation.
3 Powerful memory management
The instrument is designed with 32M memory that can store up to 40,000 measurement data or
coordinate data; memory management can be easily carried out to add, delete, modify and transmit data.
4

More delicate telescope lens

The new generation MPE-822R/825R total station, on the basis of the original version, is more scientifically
and reasonably designed in appearance and internal structure. The telescope lens is more delicate that enables
easier measurement.
5

Preloaded with road measurement program

Besides normally-used basic measurement mode (Angle Measurement, Distance Measurement,

Coordinate Measurement) and special measurement programs (REM, Offset-measurement Mode,
MLM, Stake-out, Layout, Resection, Area Measurement), the instrument is also preloaded with road
measurement program that greatly facilitates control survey, topographic survey, and engineering layout.
6 Simplified Chinese display (just for Chinese version)
MPE-822R/825R total station (Chinese version) adopts simplified Chinese display in 7 lines of clear and
good-looking characters, greatly facilitating instrument operation.

Precautions:
1. Avoid aiming the objective lens at the sun in case of measuring under direct sunlight. It is
recommended to use a solar filter to relieve the influence.
2. In case the laser is transmitted to the object surface in a tilt way, the measured value may be incorrect for laser
weakening or diffusion.
3. In case of surveying on road, the instrument may not calculate correct result in a correct way for the
interference of laser reflected around
4. Do not store the instrument in high temperature and low temperature environment; nor to store it in an
environment where temperature is likely to change abruptly (except climate change during operation).
5. The instrument not to be used shall be placed in a case and stored in a dry location where shock, dust and
humidity are prevented.
6. In case there is a great difference between the temperature of the working environment and that of the storage
environment, the instrument shall be kept in the case first and shall not be used until it has adapted to the
ambient temperature.
7. The battery shall be removed and stored separately in case the instrument is not to be used for a long time;
besides, the battery shall be charged once every month.
8. The instrument to be transported shall be placed in a case. Operate carefully during transportation; avoid
squeezing, bumping and violent vibration. Soft cushion is recommended around the case for long distance
transportation.
9. Wood tripod is recommended for erecting the instrument for that metal tripod may result in vibration and
finally affects measurement precision.
10. Except absorbent cotton or lens tissue, never use other objects to clean exposed optical components.
Cleaning shall be done softly.
11. Use lint or hair brush to remove dust on the instrument surface after operation. Never power and start a wetted
instrument, it shall be cleaned dry with a clean cloth and placed to air for some time.
12. Check the instrument carefully before operation for confirming that all the indexes, functions, power, initial
settings and modified parameters are as required.
13. To avoid unnecessary instrument damage, non-professional personnel are not authorized to
dismantle the instrument in case that instrument function is abnormal.

3.8 Correction for Refraction and Earth Curvature

The instrument can automatically correct refraction and earth curvature in horizontal distance and height distance
(height difference) measurement.
23

Maple International Instrument

Calculation of refraction and earth curvature correction is as per the following formula:
Corrected horizontal distance:
D=S * [cos+ sin* S * cos (K-2) / 2Re]
Corrected dZ:
H= S * [sin + cos* S * cos (1-K) / 2Re]
If not to correct refraction and earth curvature, the HD and dZ values shall be calculated in the
following ways:
D=Scos
H=Ssin
In which:

K=0.14 atmospheric refraction coefficient

Re=6370 km radius of curvature of the earth
(or ) vertical angle from the horizontal plane

S slope distance
Note: Factory setting of the instruments atmospheric refraction coefficient is K=0. 14

4 Preparation for Measurement

4.1 Package Opening and Storage
Package opening
Put the case on ground softly with the cover side upwards; unlock and uncover the case to take out the
instrument.
Storage
Put on telescope lens cover properly to have the vertical clamp screw at the aiming part and the plate vial at the base
upwards. Lay the instrument horizontally (with the telescopes objective lens end downwards) into the case and
slightly tighten the vertical clamp screw, cover and lock the case.

4.2 Set up the Instrument

Set up the instrument on the tripod; level and center it accurately to ensure the precision of measurement (special
tripod with center-connection screw shall be used).
Reference for operation: instrument leveling and centering
1. Erect the tripod

Extend the tripod first to have the distance between the three legs almost equal and the top
plane almost horizontal. Tighten the three securing screws.

Have the center of the tripod and the measurement point almost on the same plumb line.
Trample tightly on the tripod to erect it on ground securely.
24

Maple International Instrument

2. Attach the instrument on the tripod

Place the instrument carefully on the tripod head; slide the instrument by loosening the tripod screw with one
hand and holding the instrument with another hand. Slightly tighten the tripod screw when the plumb bob
is aligned with the center of the point.
3. Roughly level the instrument with circular level
(1) Turn the leveling screws A

and B to move the bubble in the circular level to the line

perpendicular to the center connection line of above two leveling screws.

COM ADJ SET

Measurement not allowed;

rechargingor replacement is a must.

Note:
(1) Battery operation time will vary depending on environment conditions such as ambient temperature,
charging time, the number of times of charging and discharging etc. It is recommended for safety to
charge the battery beforehand or to prepare spare fully-charged batteries.
(2) The battery icon shows the power level regarding to the measurement mode now operating. The
power level indicated in angle measurement mode does not necessarily assure the batterys ability
for distance measurement mode. Since power consumption in distance measuring is bigger than
that in angle measuring, instrument operation may be interrupted for power shortage when it is
shifted from angle measurement mode to distance measurement mode.
It is recommended to check battery power level before setting out for outdoor survey.
(3) Seldom does the displayed power level show power decrease or increase immediately upon change
of operation mode. Battery power indication system is for displaying the general conditions of
battery power instead of momentary battery power change.
Precautions for Battery Charging
Battery charging shall be done with the charger matched before delivery.

To charge the battery, connect the charger to a 220V power source first, then remove the
battery pack from the instrument and insert it into the charger. An orange indicator on the charger means
charging in process. Charging is completed 7 hours later or when the indicator is changed into green;
now plug out it.
Precautions for Removing Battery Pack:
Make sure to turn off the power before removing battery pack from the instrument to avoid
instrument damage.
Precautions for Charging:
Although the charger is designed with over-charge protection circuit, the adapter after
charging is completed must be plugged out from the power socket.
27

Maple International Instrument

Charging shall be done under a temperature between 0 and 45C. A temperature out of this
range may lead to abnormal charging.
In case the LED indicator is not on after the charger and battery are connected properly, repair
shall be done for that the charger or the battery may have been damaged.
Precautions for Battery Storage:
Rechargeable battery can be charged for 300 - 500 times. The service life of the battery will
be shortened if its discharged completely before recharging.
To optimize battery service life, please make sure to charge the battery once every month.

4.5 Reflection Prism

A reflection prism shall be placed at the objective in case of instrument work such as distance
measurement. Reflection prism includes single (triple) prism unit, which can be connected to the base with
base connector, then installed to the tripod; or directly installed onto the prism pole. Prism unit is configured by
the user with regard to actual operation requirements.

4.6 Assemble and Removal the Base

Removal
The triangular base can be removed from the instrument as necessary (including the base connector of
reflection prism of the same base). First, loosen the securing screw of base locking knob with a screw
driver; then turn the locking knob for approx. 180 counterclockwise to remove the base from the
instrument.

instrument on the triangular base. Turn the locking knob for approx. 180 clockwise to lock the
instrument on the tripod; tighten the securing screw of the locking knob with screwdriver.

4.7 Adjust Telescope Eyepiece and Aim the Target

Method for collimating the target (for reference)
(1)

Point the telescope toward the light. Turn the diopter ring and adjust the diopter so that the cross
hairs are clearly observed. (Turn the diopter ring toward your first and then backward to focus.)

(2)

Aim the target at the peak of the triangle mark of the sighting collimator. Allow a certain space

between the sighting collimator and yourself for collimating.

(3) Focus the target with the focusing knob.
Parallax existing between the cross hairs and the target when viewing vertically or horizontally
while looking into the telescope means incorrect focusing or diopter adjustment is poor (adversely
affecting the precision of the measurement or survey). Eliminate the parallax by carefully focusing
and using diopter adjustment.

The above mentioned errors can be compensated by software through internal calculation according to each
compensation value. They can also be compensated by software calculation when the instrument is just used as a
face (face left/face right) to survey. By now, the common method to eliminate these errors is to adopt direct and
reverse surveying with the telescope and acquiring the mean value.
For adjusting and resetting above compensation value, see Chapter 11 Check and
Adjustment.
For disabling tilt correction function, see Chapter 9 Parameter Setting Mode or Chapter 11 Check

5.2 Distance Measurement

5.2.1 Set Measurement Type
Measurement type and its constant value set are displayed under the measurement tag. For example, when
the constant is 0, reflector: S 0, No-prism: N 0; prism: P 0
Press F1 (Distance Measurement Type) to change target measurement type in star key ( ) mode.
(1) Sequence of change of distance measurement type is: prism - reflector - No-prism low beam low-prism high beam.
(2) Selected measurement type can be saved even when the instrument is shut down. Therefore, it can directly
enter the type set in the previous time when the instrument is started.
(3) Different measurement type has different target constant value; therefore, the correspondence
36

Maple International Instrument

between target mode and target constant must be confirmed after target is changed.
. Measure Distance with No-prism Mode
. The range and prevision of no-prism distance measurement are depending on the laser transmitting
conditions of the white side of Kodak grey card. The range may be affected by the shape of the target and the
surrounding environment.
. The following points must be noted when measuring distance with no-prism mode: in case the
precision of measurement cannot fulfill the requirement; measurement shall be down with reflection paster
or prism.
. The long-distance mode of no-prism can be switched out from Measurement Type in Star Key mode, which is
no-prism high beam mode that is approx. 200m; now the laser is grade IIIa. Do not view the laser directly in
no-prism high beam mode for that it will damage your eyes.
(1) In case the laser is transmitted to the object surface in a tilt way, the measured value may be incorrect for laser
weakening or diffusion.
(2) In case of surveying on road, the instrument may not calculate correct result in a correct way for the
interference of laser reflected around.
(3) In case the measured target is tilt or ball-shaped or coarse, the measured distance may be longer or shorter
for that combined values are used in the calculation.
(4) If there are people or automobiles moving before the target or tree branches and leaves etc swaying before
the target, the instrument may not calculate correct result for that it cannot receive correct feedback
signal.
. Measure Distance with Reflector Mode
. When measuring distance, the reflection side of the reflector shall be vertical to the line connecting the
instrument and the target and in the direction facing the instrument. Incorrect reflector angle may result in
incorrect distance measured for laser scattering or impairing.
. Actual Measurement Range of Each Measurement Type
. Incorrect measurement type selected will lead to incorrect distance measured; therefore, correct
measurement type must be selected.
. Reflection prism mode: reflector may be used to measure distance
. Reflector and prism mode: in this mode, distance measurement can be completed without using
reflector or prism in case of special conditions such as short-distance measurement or wall target.
However, it may cause some error; therefore, no-prism mode is recommended hereby.
. Attention shall be paid to using correct target constant and confirming in case of measuring with
reflector in prism mode or measuring with prism in reflector mode.
5.2.2 Set Atmospheric Correction, Prism Constant, No-prism Constant
To set atmospheric correction, temperature and pressure must be measured first, from which
atmospheric correction value can be calculated.
37

Maple International Instrument

Setting of atmospheric correction is completed in Star Key ( ) mode. See 3.6 Set Atmospheric
Correction.
The setting of DADI prism is -30. Non-DADI prism must be set accordingly beforehand.
Setting of prism constant is completed in Star Key ( ) mode. See 3.5 Set Prism.
Setting of non-prism constant is completed in Star Key ( ) mode. See 3.7 Set No-prism Constant.

6.6 Stake-out (S.O.)

S.O. program can help the user in staking out each point on site according to the point and coordinate value.
Coordinate value can be transmitted between instrument memory and computer. Communication parameters
such as baud rate, parity check, data bit, and stop bit can be set on the instrument.
Coordinate data is composed of points (N, E, Z). Coordinate data is saved in file name; a file name can have up
to 7 characters. Up to 1000 file names can be saved in instrument memory. Either digits or characters can
form a file name. File name can be renamed in file management options. If no input point can be found in file
during S.O. setting, the program prompts the user to input the coordinate of the point. In case of point repetition
in a file, the last point saved in the memory will be used; other points of identical PT# will be neglected at the
same time.
In resection or Side Shot measurement, a file name shall be created or selected to save coordinate value;
otherwise, MPE-822R/825R total station will automatically create a default file name (LAY001). The 1st
default file name is composed of three alphabets and three digits (LAY001). If there are a number of file
names available, coordinate data will be saved in the current file name. The software provides two ways
to delete coordinate point, which are Erase a Block Point and Erase One Point. In new-point options,
two methods as Side Shot measurement or resection program can be selected to calculate and save
coordinate value to the current file. In Side Shot measurement program, measured distance and angle are
used to calculate coordinate. Z coordinate is used to calculate instrument height and prism height.
The angle and distance (saved in the file) between the occupied point of resection program mode and the two
known points are used to measure and calculate the coordinate of the new occupied point. The residual
errors of HD and height will be displayed after measuring of known points is completed. New occupied point
can be recorded into the file with an option.

6.6.4 New Point

A new point shall be set in case that the current control point and the Stake-out point are not intervisible. In New
Point option, there are two functions are used for collecting coordinate data: Side Shot and Resection. In
data collection with Side Shot method, PT# and coordinate can be saved in one file. When collecting data with
Side Shot method, the observer can select whether to set back-sight (BS) azimuth. The software provides such
two options as Set Azimuth and Skip Over.
Note: the observer can skip over Set Back-sight Azimuth option in data collection with Side Shot
method in case that back-sight azimuth is set in stake-out and the station is not moved as well as that the
instrument is not powered off. It is recommended to check back-sight azimuth before collecting data with
Side Shot method.
Once BS azimuth is set, input the No. of the measured point and prism height, and then collimate the
instrument to prism to start collecting the coordinate data of the point.
Install the instrument over a known point, measure the coordinate of the new point with Side Shot
(polar coordinate) method.

6.7 Line Measurement

Line Measurement program is for measuring the height of an inaccessible object above a ground point. Both the
objects above and the points along the established base line are inaccessible. Set two prisms, A and B, apart
from each other below the object to form a base line. Set the horizontal distance values between the
instrument and both prism A and B and save the values. The screen then shows the vertical distance from prism
A and B, the horizontal distance from the instrument to prism B, and the distance along the base line and the
screen will also display the vertical distance and horizontal distance from prism A to that point. Therefore, the
vertical distance between the two ends points of the base line, Points G and L in the diagram, can be measured.

6.8 Offset Measurement Mode

Offset Measurement has totally four modes:
1
2
3
4

Angle offset measurement

Distance offset measurement
Plane offset measurement
Column offset measurement

6.8.1 Angle Offset Measurement Mode

This mode is useful when direct prism setup is difficult, for example, at the center of a tree. In this mode, the
horizontal distance from the instrument to Point P (prism point) shall be the same as that from the instrument
to the target point. Go on with offset measurement after setting up instrument height/prism height, from which
the center position coordinate of the measured object is at hand.
To measure the project of A0 (the coordinate of ground Point A1), set instrument height and prism height To
measure the coordinate of Point A0, just set instrument height (prism height is set as 0).

87

Maple International Instrument

Prism P

HD (r) = HD (f)
HD (r): HD from prism to the instrument.
HD (f): HD from the measured point to the
instrument

There are two ways to set vertical angle in Angle Offset Measurement Mode.
1. Free vertical angle: the vertical angle is changed along the up-and-down turning of the telescope.
2. Hold vertical angle: vertical angle is held that it is not changed for telescope turning.
Therefore, if A0 is collimated in the first way, the vertical angle is changed along the up-and-down
turning of the telescope; slope distance (SD) and height difference (VD) will also be changed. If A0 is
collimated in the second way, the vertical angle is held to prism position and will not be changed for telescope
turning.

11 Check and Adjustment

The instrument has been qualified by checking and calibrating rigorously before delivery. However, the internal
structure may be affected for long-distance transportation or environment change; therefore, in order to ensure
measurement precision, make sure to check and adjust all the items of the instrument as specified in this section
after receiving and before using the instrument.

128

Maple International Instrument

11.1 Plate Level

Check
See section 4.2 Level the instrument with plate
level Adjustment
1. Adjust with the leveling screw that is parallel with the plate level first if the plate level bubble is
deviated from the center during adjustment; move the bubble to the center for nearly half of the deviation. The
remained half to the center is adjusted by turning the levels adjustment screw (on the right of the plate level)
with the adjusting pin.
2. Rotate the instrument for 180 to check that whether the bubble is in the center. Repeat step (1) if the bubble is
not in the center until the bubble is centered.
3. Rotate the instrument for 90, adjust the bubble to the center with the third leveling screw.
Repeat check and adjustment steps until the bubble is in the center regardless of the direction of the
collimation part.

11.2 Circular Level

Check
No adjustment is needed if the bubble of the circular level is centered after plate level check is confirmed
correct.
Adjustment
Center the bubble by adjusting the adjusting screw below the bubble with the adjusting pin or Allen
wrench if the bubble is not centered. To adjust, release the adjusting screw (1 or 2) opposite to the
direction of bubble deviation, then tighten other adjusting screws in the deviation direction to center the
bubble. The tightening force of the three adjusting screws must be in correspondence when the bubble is
centered.

11.3 Check & Adjustment of Telescope Reticule

Check
1. Level the instrument; then select a target point A in the vision range of the telescope. Collimate point A with the
cross-hair of the reticule and secure the horizontal and vertical clamp screw.
129

Maple International Instrument

2. Move point A to the edge of the site by turning the vertical tangent screw of the telescope (point A).
3. If point A moves along the vertical hair of the reticule, it means point A is still within the vertical hair,
no adjustment is necessary if the cross-hair is not inclined. If point A is deviated from the center of the
vertical hair as shown below, it means the cross-hair is inclined. Adjustment of reticule is needed.

Adjustment
1. Remove the reticule cover between the eyepiece and the focusing screw to expose the four reticule securing
adjusting screws (see the figure below).
2. Loosen the four securing screws with a screwdriver uniformly; rotate reticule base around the
collimation axis to locate point A on the vertical hair.
3. Tighten the securing screws uniformly; check and adjust the result with above method.
4. Relocate the cover in the original place.

11.4 Verticality of the Collimation Axis to the Horizontal Axis () Check

1. Set target point A away from the instrument at the height same with the instrument, precisely level the
instrument and power on.
2. Collimate target point A at the left face, read the horizontal angle.
(e.g.: horizontal angle 101310)
3. Turn the telescope during releasing the vertical and horizontal clamp screw, with the right face of the
collimation part turned to collimate the same point A. tighten the horizontal and vertical clamp screws before
collimating, read the horizontal angle.

4. -(180) = 3020, adjustment is needed

4 cross-hair adjusting screws

3 reticule securing screws

Adjustment
1. Adjust the horizontal angle reading with horizontal tangent screws until C is cleared.
1901340151901325
2. Remove the reticule base cover between the eyepiece and the focusing screw, adjust the two cross-hair
adjusting screws on the right and left of the reticule; loosen the screws one side first and then secure
those on the other side; move the reticule to collimate the center of the cross-hair with target point A.
3. Repeat the steps for checking and adjust until 2C20 which is as required.
4. Relocate the cover in the original place.

11.5 Vertical Index Zero Compensation

Check
1. Erect and level the instrument to have the pointing direction of the telescope to be corresponding with
the line connecting the instrument center and any leveling screw X; now tighten the horizontal clamp
screw.
2. Reset the vertical index after startup and tighten the vertical clamp screw. The instrument displays the current
vertical angle of the direction in which the telescope points.
3. Turn leveling screw X in one direction to about 10mm circular pitch, the displayed vertical angle
changes along moving and finally disappears and replaced by out displayed, indicating the
instruments vertical axis tilt has exceeded 3, which is beyond the designed range of the vertical angle
compensation. When the leveling screw is turned back, the instruments vertical angle is restored. Repeat
the test at the critical location to observe the change, indicating the vertical compensation is in good
order.
Adjustment
Have the instrument inspected by the manufacturer in case of compensation out of work.

11.6 Vertical Index Difference ( i angle) Vertical Index 0Set

This item follows checks specified in section 11.3 and 11.5. Check
1. Erect and level the instrument, then start. Collimate the telescope with any clear target point A to generate
face left vertical angle L.
131

Maple International Instrument

2. Turn the telescope and recollimate point A to generate face right vertical angle R.
3. In case vertical angle zenith is , then (360); in case vertical angle horizontal is 0,
then
(180) or (540)
4. If 10, its necessary to reset the 0 point of vertical index.

11.7 Optical Plummet

Check
1. Erect the instrument on tripod; place a piece of paper drawn with a cross on the ground directly under the
instrument.
2. Adjust the focus of the focus of the optical plummet, then move the paper to center the cross on the paper at
the center of the location.
3. Turn the leveling screw to coincide the center mark of the plummet with the crosspoint on the paper.
4. Rotate the collimation part. For each 90, observe the coincidence of the plummet center mark with the
crosspoint.
5. If the center mark of the optical plummet always coincides with the crosspoint during collimation part rotation,
no adjustment is needed. Otherwise, adjust with the following method.

4 plummet adjusting screws

Adjustment
1. Remove the cover of the adjusting screws between the eyepiece of the optical plummet and the
focusing screw.
2. Fix the paper drawn with a cross and mark the paper with the center mark points of the plummet for each 90
rotation of the instrument as A, B, C, D shown in the figure.
3. Connect diagonal point AC and BD with bee lines, generating crosspoint O.
4. Adjust the four adjusting screws of the plummet with adjusting pin to coincide the center mark of the plummet
with point O.
5. Repeat check step 4, check and adjust until it is as required.
6. Relocate the cover in the original place.

11.8 Instrument Constant (K)

Instrument constant have been checked and adjusted before delivery, factory setting K =0. Seldom does
instrument constant change. But we still recommend checking and adjusting once to twice every year. The
check is suitable to be done on standard base line or with the method ad stated below:
Check
133

Maple International Instrument

1. Select a flat site and erect and level the instrument at point A. Mark, with vertical hair, point A, B and B, C on
the ground that are on the same straight line and with a distance of about 50m. Center and erect reflection prism.
2. After setting the instrument with temperature and pressure data, measure out the horizontal distance of AB, AC.
3. Erect the instrument at point C and center it, precisely measure out the horizontal distance of BC.
4. The measurement constant of the instrument can be calculated out.
K()
K should be close to; if K6, the instrument must be sent to standard base line site for
rigorous check and then adjusted according to the check value.
Approx. 50m

Approx. 100m

Adjustment
In case it has been proved through rigorous check that Instrument constant K is not close to 0 and has been
changed, if user adjustment is necessary, set the addition constant of the instrument as
comprehensive constant K.
Orient with the vertical hair of the instrument, strictly locate point A, B, C on the same
straight line. Ground of point B should have robust and clear centering mark.
Coincidence of point B prism center and instrument center is crucial for ensuring
measurement precision; therefore, tripod and tribrach suitable for both are recommended for point
B. if to replace with tri-point prism connector and tribrach, the tripod and tribrach shall be kept
stand still, just replace prism and instrument part above the tribrach, which can reduce coincidence
error.

134

Maple International Instrument

11.9 Parallelism between Collimation Axis and Laser Shooting Axis

Approx. 50m

Check
1. Erect reflection prism 50m away from the instrument.
2. Collimate reflection prism center with the cross-hair of the telescope.
3. Power on and enter distance measurement mode, press SD (or HD) to measure distance. Turn the
horizontal tangent screw left and right, turn the vertical tangent screw up and down to collimate
electrically. Find the center of laser shooting axis of distance measurement through the left and right, up and
down zone lighted by the laser beam.
4. Check the coincidence of the cross-hair center of the telescope and the collimation center of laser
shooting; basically coinciding means that it is acceptable.
Adjustment
If the deviation between the cross-hair center of the telescope and the collimation center of laser shooting is too big,
have the instrument calibrated by professional organization.

11.10 Base Leveling Screw

In case of leveling screw loosening, adjust the two adjusting screws for base leveling screw. Tighten the screw to
suitable compression force.

11.11 Assembly Parts for Reflection Prism

Reflection prism base connector
Make sure the plate level and optical plummet on base connector has been checked correctly. For check steps,
please refer to section 11.1 and 11.7.
Centering rod verticality
As shown in the figure of section 11.7, draw a cross at point C and with the lower tip of the centering rod standing
at C, which shall not be moved during the check. The two supporting feet e and f are supported over E and F of
the cross respectively. Adjust the length of e and f to center the bubble of the circular level of the centering rod.
Erect and level the instrument at point A not far away from the cross line; collimate tip C with the center
135

Maple International Instrument

of the cross-hair and tighten the horizontal clamp screw; turn up the telescope to have upper part D of the centering
rod to be close to the horizontal hair; dNEZ centering rod just extend or draw back support leg e to move D left
and right to collimate cross-hair center. Now, both point C and D shall be on the center line of the cross.
Erect the instrument on point B of another cross line and in the same way, just extend and draw back support
leg f to coincide point D of the centering rod with the cross center line at point C.
Through instrument adjustment at point A and B, the center rod has been vertical. Now if the bubble of the
circular level on the rod is deviated from the center, adjust the three adjusting screws under the circular
level to center it.
Check once again until the centering rod is vertical in both directions and the round bubble is centered.
